The Last House on the Left- 1972
directed by:Wes Craven
Cast: Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David A. Hess, Fred Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, Marc Sheffler
The crass directorial debut of the late, great Wes Craven is a film more groundbreaking and important as exploitation forefather of sorts, than a really great film.
The plot revolves around two teenage girls, Mari Collingwood and Phyllis Stone who are taken into the woods and tortured by a gang of murderous thugs. The story is inspired by the Swedish film The Virgin Spring (1960), directed by Ingmar Bergman, which in turn is based on a Swedish ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge”.
Shot on a very modest budget without the proper permits with a cast of mostly unknown actors, the Last House on the Left is a rare feat on its own, but fails to do more than just depict realistic cruelty and violence. Truth is that ,this one is still a disturbing film but it is also true that the comic relief moments don’t do it many favors. David Hess is still as menacing as ever, but other than his much celebrated performance there is little else to commemorate in terms of acting here. In terms of filming Craven utilized the documentary-style techniques, with lots of hand-held camera work and close-ups ,some parallels between Craven’s and Sam Pekinpah’s work have also been drawn. Undoubtedly this one is not for the squeamish, lack of stylized cinematography aside, the depiction of violence itself seems sort of hollow, as any sort of motivation and exposition seems to lack in the narrative.
So ,is this a really good film? Not really. But it is in historical hindsight very important ,as it further cemented the state of the exploitation cinema and propelled realistic violence even deeper into the social consciousness. After films like that one and the “Texas Chainsaw massacre” cinematic violence went on to become even more pronounced and the horrors of Vietnam war settled in the American middle-class dominated Suburbia. The Last House on the Left is definitely a product of its age.
