The Dreaming (1988)

Καλογυρισμένη και καλοφωτογραφισμένη banalite από την Αυστραλία.Το φίλμ ξεκινάει με ατμόσφαιρα,ρώμη και δυναμισμό αλλά οι σεναριακές του αδυναμίες.η πληθώρα συμβάσεων και η επαναληψιμότητα της πλοκής το καταδικάζουν στη μετριότητα.

Mια γιατρός κουράρει μια άρρωστη έφηβη Αβορίγινα,η οποία  αψηφώντας τα ταμπού της φυλής της είχε επισκεφθεί ένα ιερό σπήλαιο-στο σπήλαιο είχε διαπραχθεί μια σειρά στυγερών εγκλημάτων από Καναδούς φαλαινοθήρες στο μακρινό παρελθόν. Η γιατρός σύντομα ξεκινά να βασανίζεται από ενοχλητικά όνειρα και βρίσκει τον εαυτό μπλεγμένη σε ένα μυστήριο ηλικίας 200 ετών.

Πως το κάνουνε οι άνθρωποι?Να ξεκινάνε μια ταινία με θαυμάσια αίσθηση σασπένς,κινηματογραφικής οικονομίας,μερικές σκηνές tribal horror που σηκώνουν την τρίχα κάγκελο …και στη δεύτερη μπομπίνα…ποιος έσβησε τα φώτα αδέρφια?

Ειλικρινά το δεύτερο μέρος της ταινίας είναι βαρετό μέχρι θανάτου,με τις σεκάνς των ονείρων να επαναλαμβάνονται με εκνευριστικά συχνό ρυθμό και το χλιαρό φινάλε να έρχεται σαν λύτρωση.

Τα θετικά του όλου πράγματος:Καλή αίσθηση του στυλιζαρίσματος,χλιδάτη φωτογραφία και συμπαθητικές ερμηνείες.Τα αρνητικά…τα έχουμε ήδη αναφέρει.Ας συμπληρώσουμε λέγοντας οτι το φίλμ πάσχει όσον αφορά την έλλειψη αιματηρών σκηνών που που θα προσέθεταν λίγους πόντους στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα.Διάολε περί ταινίας τρόμου πρόκειται άλλωστε.

Οι φανατικοί του Ozploitation ας βλεφαριάσουν,οι λοιποί ας προσπεράσουν.

Slow,partly effective, but excruciatingly uneven tribal horror from down under.

A doctor treats a sick aborigine, who had defied a tribal taboo and visited a sacred cave. The doctor soon finds herself having disturbing dreams and finds herself involved in a 200-year-old mystery.

For starters,there are lots of superbly shot, chilling scenes in “The Dreaming”,but the redeeming qualities of the film seem to fade away after the end of the first reel.The second reel is a tedious affair filled with annoyingly repeated dream sequences and a pointless obsession with the travelogue-styled imagery of the Australian(Tasmanian in particular)countryside.Well coasts,rocks and wavy waters might be good to watch but when they don’t add to the plot of a film then they better stay out of the foreground.To make things worse,the climax lacks the punch it is needed for a story like this one.The solid performances by the cast do little to amplify the overall quality of the film.

The end result is a lukewarm dish,suitable for consumption only if you are a die-hard Ozploitation buff.

Άχρωμο,άοσμο και σε τελική ανάλυση άνοστο sci-fi/post-apocalypse/canuxplotation.Tο “Quarantine” έχει να προσφέρει μόνο το αξιομνημόνευτο,τραγελαφικό motto “Cleanliness is healthiness” στο θεατή και ξεχνιέται με το που επιστρέφει κανείς το vhs στη θήκη του.

Σε μια φουτουριστική κοινωνία αποδεκατισμένη από την πανούκλα, ένα φασιστικό κίνημα καταλαμβάνει την εξουσία και θέτει σε καραντίνα, όχι μόνο τα θύματα της πανούκλας, αλλά και κάθε πολιτικό αντίπαλο ή αντιφρονούντα . Οι πανταχού παρόντες επαναστάτες προσπαθούν να δολοφονήσουν έναν ιδιαίτερα αντιδραστικό φασίζοντα γερουσιαστή ενω ένας προγραμματιστής ηλεκτρονικών υπολογιστών μπλέκεται άθελά του στην υπόθεση.

Postnuke dystopia,κλασικό 80ies θέμα ταινίας.Δυστυχώς όμως για εμάς και για τους συντελεστές της ταινίας έχει αναλυθεί πολύ αρτιότερα σε πάμπολλες άλλες παραγωγές της εποχής.Το συγκεκριμένο ξεκινάει σαν ένα τραγελαφικό flipside του “Τhe Crazies” και ίσως να είχε πλάκα υπό προυποθέσεις αν στην πορεία η υπόθεση δεν εξελισσόταν σε θέατρο του παραλόγου με πρωταγωνιστές χαρακτήρες χαλκομανίες Κακών.

Oι ερμηνείες είναι όλες ξύλινες.Το budget βία να έφτανε για 2-3 σάντουιτς ανα ηθοποιό και το συνολικό αποτέλεσμα σίγουρα δεν αποτελεί κάτι το αξιομνημόνευτο.Αυτό που είναι πολύ λυπηρό είναι το οτι ένα θέμα σαν τις φασίζουσες τάσεις που ελλοχεύουν σε κάθε άνθρωπο,ειδικά όταν πάρει λίγη εξουσία στα χέρια του,οι συντελεστές το χειρίζονται με μια εγκληματική επιδερμικότητα.Αναμφισβήτητα η ταινία στα χέρια άλλου σεναριογράφου και σκηνοθέτη θα είχε πολλά περισσότερα πράγματα να πει.

Προσπεράστε.

Flat and passable sci-fi flick set in a dystopian plague ridden environment, “Quarantine’s” only memorable moments include the hilarious motto “Cleanliness is healthiness” and a Joseph Goebbels lookalike lead,Jerry Wasserman as the paranoid,lunatic,fascist senator Ford(the irony).

In a futuristic society being decimated by plague, a fascist movement seizes power and quarantines not only the plague victims, but anyone related to them. Rebels trying to assassinate a particularly reactionary senator stumble onto a computer programmer trying to track and eradicate the disease.

Questions like:Who controls the controllers? or if the rise to power dehumanizes most people have been employed and capitalized in a much better manner by countless other films.This one is just a cheap exercise in post apocalyptic exploitation.with a budget so low that it really tampers with the overall quality of the cinematic material herein.

This is nothing less than unfortunate because themes like the inner fascist tendencies inherent in every human and the corruption that lurks within political power are premises that can make really interesting movies.

Alas,Charles Wilkinson‘s “Quarantine” is a rather forgettable affair.Next please…

The Stick (1988)

Πανίσχυρο war actioner με στοιχεία μεταφυσικού θρίλερ,ορμώμενο εκ Νοτίου Αφρικής…

Ώς γνωστόν ο πόλεμος είναι εγγεγραμένος στο ανθρώπινο DNA,παραδόξως όμως η ίδια η ατελής φύση του ανθρώπου αδυνατεί να αντέξει την ανορθογραφία και τον παραλογισμό του.Τα αποτελέσματα γνωστά:Shellshock,μετατραυματικό άγχος,τρέλα,μανία καταδίωξης και άλλα παρόμοια όμορφα και ωραία.

Τούτο λοιπόν εδώ το πανάγνωστο φιλμάκι(του οποίου βλακωδώς το vhs δεν φωτογράφισα)παρουσιάζει γλαφυρότατα όλα τα προαναφερθέντα.Η αφήγηση είναι καθηλωτική,οι επιρροές από το cinema τρόμου άψογα αφομοιωμένες και το τελικό αποτέλεσμα σε αφήνει παγωτό.

Μια ομάδα Νοτιοαφρικανών στρατιωτών στέλνεται στην αφιλόξενη Σαβάνα προκειμένου να βρει και να καταστρέψει μια ομάδα ανταρτών που σκότωσε μια προηγούμενη περίπολο. Όταν η διμοιρία βρίσκει ένα μικρό χωριό με όλους τους άνδρες απόντες, οι στρατιώτες πανικοβάλλονται και σφαγιάζουν τους υπόλοιπους κατοίκους του χωριού,συμπεριλαμβανομένου και του ντόπιου γέρου μάγου.Κατά την επιστροφή της ομάδας πίσω στη βάση παράξενα πράγματα αρχίζουν να συμβαίνουν. Είναι οι στρατιώτες του εχθρού κανονικοί άνθρωποι, ή μήπως είναι απέθαντοι καταραμένοι από τον γέρο σαμάνο.

Όλα καλά και όλα ωραία.Βέβαια υπό μια έννοια η ταινία δεν κομίζει ακριβώς γλαύκας εις Αθήνας.Υπάρχουν παρόμοιες αξιομνημόνευτες πολεμικές ταινίες, σπουδές στην ανθρώπινη διολίσθηση στην αποκτήνωση όπως το “The Beast of War” αλλά το “The Stick” δεν είναι μια κοινή πολεμική περιπέτεια, κομίζει κάτι το εξωτικό και συνάμα απειλητικό.Η Νοτιοαφρικάνικη Σαβάνα αποδεικνύεται εχθρικότατη και κάθε πήλινη καλύβα ιθαγενούς μοιραία.Η καταραμένη διμοιρία θα αντιμετωπίσει πράγματα που δεν μπορεί να αντιληφθεί ο ανθρώπινος νους και η αποικιοκρατική ματαιοδοξία θα ηττηθεί από την προυπάρχουσα καθεστηκυία τάξη (Σαμάνος).

Περισσότερο ύμνος στην αποκατάσταση της  προαιώνιας φυσικής ισορροπίας παρά κοινότοπο αντιπολεμικό δράμα,το ‘The Stick” εκτός από καλογυρισμένο είναι και πρωτότυπο.Δείτε το…

Eerie Southafrican war/action/thriller with supernatural horror touches,”The stick” is a very well made piece of celluloid that needs to be discovered by a wider audience.

A group of South African soldiers are sent out into the bush to find and destroy a rebel group that killed an earlier patrol. When they find a small village with all the men gone, the soldiers panic and slaughter the remaining villagers, including an old witch doctor. As the group tries to make their way back to camp, strange things begin happening to them. Are the enemy soldiers normal humans, or have they been cursed by the old shaman?

The film’s narrative seems to be the main asset here.As it isn’t exactly mechanical,linear or circular,it adds some surreal touches in the final result.Surreal in the sense that it overwhelms reality.Indeed ,the war this doomed platoon seems to fight is predominantly a war with themselves,rather than a war with a visible enemy.Of course racism and Apartheid aesthetics is in the agenda here and they are not praised.Soldiers commit crimes that seem to be racial hate crimes,as they execute an underaged native child and an old Shaman with the same ease they would oil their firearms.

But Karma is a bitch…Soon the fragile sanity of the scummy soldiers will start snapping and the local grasslands will become their unhallowed graves.

Unique landscape,plausible plot,solid direction,engaging photography,great performances and a unique depiction of the Collonnial state of mind make this flick a treasured one for those who’ve seen it.The rest better find a way to do so…

Jakarta(1988)

Συμπαθητικό action με τον, διάσημο από τη σειρά σύμβολο του γυναικείου hipster “Sex and the City”,Chris Noth στα πρώτα του βήματα.Στο παρόν βρίσκει κυριολεκτικά ο Φίλιππος το Ναθαναήλ αφού είναι συμπαραγωγή της Troma films και της Ινδονησιακής trashoμάνας Parkit films.

Ένας πράκτορας της CIA περιπλανιέται πίνωντας στους δρόμους της Νέας Υόρκης στοιχειωμένος από το θάνατο της όμορφης γυναίκας που είχε ερωτευτεί , ενώ βρισκόταν σε μυστική αποστολή στην Τζακάρτα.Ξαφνικά πέφτει θύμα απαγωγής από τους πρώην συναδέλφους του και αφού τον ναρκώνουν τον ξαναστέλνουν πακέτο πίσω στην Ινδονησιακή πρωτεύουσα, όπου προσπαθεί να διαλευκάνει το μυστήριο που του καταρράκωσε τη ζωή τρία χρόνια νωρίτερα.

Χωρίς να φτάνει το μεγαλείο ταινιών σαν το “Intruder”,”Forceful impact”,”Lethal Hunter”,”Stabilizer” κ.τ.λ,το παρόν είναι ένα αρκετά νευρώδες actioner με ψήγματα θρίλερ.Οι καταδιώξεις και οι σκηνές δράσης είναι αρκετά γυαλισμένες και καλογυρισμένες,αλλά τα stunts είναι ακραία και φέρνουν στο μυαλό καλό(δηλαδή κακό)Ινδονησιακό cinema.

O Noth,συνεπικουρούμενος από την καλλονή Suzee Pai,τα πάει αρκετά καλά στο ρόλο του και για να μην τα πολυλογούμε η νύχτα περνάει αρκετά ευχάριστα.

Αφού δείτε τους προαναφερθέντες ογκόλιθους (και τα “Final score”, “Doublecrosser’)του Ινδονησιακού trash δείτε και αυτό εδώ.

Quite cool actioner set in Indonesian capital,the titular city of Jakarta,this one certainly doesn’t set the VCR on fire,but is nevertheless a nice,carefree watch without any surprises.

A CIA agent roams the streets of New York haunted by the death of the beautiful woman he fell in love with while on assignment in Jakarta. When he is kidnapped and drugged, the destination is Jakarta once again where he tries to unravel the mystery that is the city which broke him three years earlier.

Cool direction,well made chase scenes around the slums of Jakarta,with a hilarious roof/terrace chase easily stealing the show,a nice film pace,some nice ending twists and a solid lead by Chris Noth make this film a win.Not a triumph but still a win.

I have a soft spot for the more extravagant and outrageous Indonesian trash flicks,such as the mighty Arizal’s movies.But this one , although slicker than the aforementioned trashfests, definitely has an Indonesian flair as well and should not be ignored by fans of the late 80s action movies.

Εξαιρετικό,πλήν πανάγνωστο Δανέζικο ψυχόδραμα που μου άφησε το στόμα ανοιχτό με την πληρότητά του,την καταπληκτική του κινηματογράφιση και τις ερμηνείες του,που κόβουν την ανάσα.

Ο μεσήλικας Johannes απελευθερώνεται μετά από 16 χρόνια στη φυλακή για τη δολοφονία της συζύγου του. Βρίσκει δουλειά ως λαντζέρης στο υπόγειο του εστιατορίου, αλλά αποφεύγει γενικά την ανθρώπινη επαφή και ζει κλεισμένος στον κόσμο του κρατώντας ζωντανή τη μνήμη της γυναίκας του και της κοινής τους ζωής.Οι μόνοι άνθρωποι με τους οποίους θα έρθει σε επαφή και θα συνδεθεί είναι μια οικογένεια Τούρκων μεταναστών,σπρωγμένοι στο περιθώριο σαν και αυτόν. Προσπαθεί απεγνωσμένα, να συμφιλιωθεί με το σκοτεινό παρελθόν του και να επανασυνδεθεί με την κόρη του, που ζει σε ένα τροχόσπιτο με τον σύζυγό της και το παιδί τους.Το ζευγάρι όμως δε δείχνει να ενθουσιάζεται με την επιστροφή του Johannes και του κλείνει την πόρτα.Ο μοναχικός άνδρας  θα  συνειδητοποιήσει το βάρος που κουβαλάει το παρελθόν του και θα “πληρώσει τα χρέη του” με τραγικό τρόπο.

Βαρύ και ασήκωτο με επιρροές από το πάντα ανθρωποκεντρικό ,μελόδραμα του Fassbinder,με εξαιρετικό Ρεπεράζ,υπαινικτική και συνάμα φλασάτη κινηματογράφιση που εστιάζει στις έντονες χρωματικές αντιθέσεις και ενίοτε στη νουάρ αισθητική,το “The dark side of the moon” δεν είναι τίποτα λιγότερο από ένα ξεχασμένο αριστούργημα.

Το φινάλε της ταινίας φέρνει την απόλυτη κάθαρση και εμάς στα πατώματα να προσπαθούμε να συνειδητοποιήσουμε τι στην ευχή έχουμε μόλις δει.Είναι πραγματικά ακατανόητο πως το διένειμε εκείνη την εποχή η cannon films των Γκολάν-Γκλόμπους,αλλά όπως και να’χει τους συγχαίρω και για αυτή την έκφανση του γούστου τους.

Με μόλις 36 ratings στο site της IMDB, το παρόν είναι εγκληματικά άγνωστο.Δείτε το πάση θυσία…

Very sad and downbeat Danish psychodrama with a humane touch,great plot,fantastic performances,a sympathetic antihero and great cinematography and direction.

The middle-aged Johannes is released after 16 years in prison for wife murder. He finds a job as a janitor/dishwasher in the basement of a restaurant, but he refrains from general human contact and will only get in touch and connect with the Turkish colleagues. First of all he tries, however, to come to terms with his past and reconnect with her daughter, who lives in a trailer with her husband and their child.His daughter is is not really happy with his reappearance.The solitary man will soon enough realize the gravity of his past actions and will give “pay his debts”.

This gem of a film is a very obscure case as it seems to be totally forgotten and unknown.Too bad,as it was nominated for best Danish film award in 1986,it sure is a great film.It is beyond my knowledge how on Earth CANNON films decided to distribute it but it sure deserves a broader exposure.Erik Clausen‘s cinema has a lot in common with Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s humanistic,melodramatic cinematic approach and cursed antiheroes.”Manden i månen” is also directed and photographed in a superb way and the experienced eye can also train nods to Film Noir.

The performances by the cast are very realistic and stellar and the climax is cathartic to say the least.Nothing less than a fantastic piece of Arthouse cinematic realism… 

Track it down at all costs…

Run If You Can (1987)

Άσε μας κουκλίτσα μου…

“Δημοσιουπαλληλίστικο” (δηλαδή ανιαρό) slasher της κακιάς ώρας,με μηδαμινά θέλγητρα προς τέρψιν των πάντα υπομονετικών και φιλότιμων οπαδών του είδους, που περιμένουν το αιματάκι να τρέξει ωσάν ευσεβείς πιστοί με τη λαμπάδα αναμένη …

Μια νεαρή φοιτήτρια Νομικής,ονόματι Kim ,βλέπει τυχαία ταινίες  snuff στο δέκτη της λόγω κάποιας ηλεκτρομαγνητικής ανωμαλίας στο σήμα ενός δορυφορικού “πιάτου”.Αμέσως ειδοποιεί την αστυνομία,η οποία καταδιώκει ήδη έναν κατά συρροή δολοφόνο με το προσωνύμιο “ladykiller”(τι πρωτότυπο!!!).

Tρισάθλια,σκυλοβαρετή εκτελεση μιας σχετικά ενδιαφέρουσας ιδέας.Η ταινία αποτυγχάνει παταγωδώς σε όλα τα επίπεδα και είναι απορίας άξιον τι γυρεύει ο Martin Landau στο κάστ.Η σκηνοθεσία δεν κατορθώνει ποτέ να δημιουργήσει μια στοιχειώδη ατμόσφαιρα αγωνίας (thriller γαρ) και οι δολοφονίες προβάλονται με πληκτικό και επαναλήψιμο τρόπο ως snuff videos.Μη φανταστείτε snuff σαν τα ψευδο shockumentary του D’Amato στο “Εmmanuele in America”.Εκείνα σηκώνανε την τρίχα του θεατή κάγκελο.Αυτά εδώ είναι ωδη στη σαχλαμάρα-ημίμετρα για μπατίρηδες σκηνοθέτες και παραγωγούς.Σαν να βλέπεις σφαίρα να καρφώνεται στη σάρκα και να μην σκάει ούτε ένα squib,σαν να κάνουν σε τσόντα sex με τα ρούχα.Γίνεται?Ε…δεν γίνεται…

Τέλοσπάντων,τούτο εδώ θα πήγαινε στην πυρά της χαλυβουργικής,εάν δεν ήμουν συλλέκτης.Τι να κάνω , τα λυπάμαι τα vhs.Όπως και να’χει το “Run…if you can” είναι σούπα,φέσι,τεκές και όλα τα συναφή. “Απαράδεκτον  για πράκτορες…”

 

Abominable and loathsome piece of pretentious horror.Tonight’s affair tries too hard to be a slasher film,but it blatantly fails in all fields.

A young girl, watching an old film, witnesses screen shots of a couple making love, followed by the murder of the woman. Apparently a scanner dish nearby is picking up the murderer’s private videos, and the young girl is placed in great danger…

The idea behind the plot isn’t that bad and could adorn a much better film than this one.The problem is that “Run if you can” is plagued by each and every flaw of DTV (Direct to video)and TV movies:Lack of resources,laughably bad performances,except for the veteran character actors Landau and Van Dyke,flawed continuity,lack of decent suspense and horror atmosphere,lack of decent gore,implausible conclusion.These are only few of the flaws “Run if you can” suffers from.

There were “hack” directors like David De Coteau,who made cheap televisual styled exploitation and direct to video tosh and,against all odds, made those movies so over the top,so extravagant,that they could bring a broad smile to the viewer.This one is so tame that it hurts,it totally lacks the punch and the  nerve of a low budget exploitation flick.

I’m sorry but I don’t seem to be able to find any redeeming qualities or any valid motive for someone to watch this particular motion picture.It is a bottom barrel slasher entry and it should stay in the video limbo forever.

Some things better stay undiscovered,as they might have this particular status for a good reason

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Κλασική Κωμωδία τρόμου από τους αδελφούς Τσιόντο.Περισσότερο κωμωδία παρά ταινία τρόμου,το παρόν τουλάχιστον στο γράφοντα δεν είπε πολλά πράγματα.Αναγνωρίζω βέβαια την αιρετική και κανιβαλιστική διάθεση των δημιουργών που σατιρίζουν με αγάπη τις παλιές ταινίες εισβολής εξωγήινων με άμεσες επιρροές από τη δεκαετία του ’50.Αλλά έως εκεί…

Περίεργα πράγματα συμβαίνουν στη ήσυχη πολίχνη του Crescent Cove…Kάτοικοι της πόλης ανακαλύπτουν οτι από το πουθενά έχει εγκατασταθεί στον τόπο τους τσίρκο.Οι κλόουν λυμαίνονται την πόλη και σκορπούν τον τρόπο μετατρέποντας τους κατοίκους σε ρόζ κώνους.Όλα αυτά μέχρι που δράση αναλαμβάνουν δύο αδέρφια παγωτατζήδες και επαναφέρουν την τάξη στην πολύπαθη κοινότητα.

Εντάξει…Το παρόν έχει όπως είπαμε πλακίτσα,αλλά βλέπεται κυρίως με εγκυκλοπαιδικό ενδιαφέρον.Ώς γνωστόν δεν θεωρώ τη μίξη της κωμωδίας με τον τρόμο ιδιαίτερα γόνιμη και το παρόν σίγουρα δεν αποτελεί εξαίρεση…

Quintessential B-movie by the Chiodo brothers.More a black comedy than a horror,”killer klowns…” looks older than it actually is,it feels like a grotesque John Waters movie meeting an old sci-fi/monster movie from the Fifties.It certainly is good for what it is.But to tell you the truth,I sort of distanced myself from what I was watching, when I was watching it.You see I’m more into cinematic thrills and chills than cinematic laughs.

When a small town is invaded by aliens from outer space who are capturing and killing the townspeople, no one takes them seriously. Why? The aliens all look like circus clowns, use weapons that look clown like, and all have painted on smiles. Only a few of the young people in the town realize the danger and of course no one believes them. Armed with an ice cream truck they try and rescue their friends. 

The clowns steal the show in this one,as they manage to look genuinely horrifying,creepy,funny and grotesque depending on the scene.Definitely memorable little freaks,once seen,never forgotten.The performance are quite cool and the overall low budget essence of the film doesn’t affect the final result.This was a good call for the Chiodo brothers,since they manage to deliver an effective film by all means.

Not being a fan of horror/comedies I doubt I’ll ever watch this one again.This is actually a surreal black comedy with little connection with the horror genre.Fans who enjoy the overall B-movie culture and bad cinema might be interested in this one.

Άλλο ένα trash ποίημα απ’την εποχή της αθωώτητας,τα αμίμητα 80ies,σας παρουσιάζουμε και σήμερα τη νύχτα

Ένας βρικόλακας που εργάζεται ως οδηγός ταξί συναντά και ερωτεύεται μια νεαρή γυναίκα με καρκίνο στο τελικό στάδιο.Την μετατρέπει σε βαμπίρ,κάτι που προκαλεί την αντίδραση του ζηλιάρη πλήν εν διαστάσει συζύγου της που θα προσπαθήσει να σκοτώσει και τους δύο.

Διάολε…αυτό έχει τρελό κέφι!Ατμόσφαιρα και soundtrack softcore ταινίας με μια πρέζα από pop videoclip της εποχής,love story παρασκήνιο,sexy βαμπίρ,αιματοβαμμένοι φόνοι,μέτριες ερμηνείες,αλλά καταπληκτική φωτογραφία συνθέτουν μια ταινία κόλαφο…

Σαφώς και το παρόν είναι σκουπίδι…Πως μπορεί να πάρει κανείς στα σοβαρά αυτό το σενάριο?Αλλά δεν υπάρχει καμία περιστροφή και πρόφαση πίσω από τις προθέσεις των δημιουργών.Οι άνθρωποι μας προσφέρουν αφειδώς διασκέδαση και το κάνουν με τους καλύτερους δυνατούς όρους.

Περιττό να πω οτι έχω ενθουσιαστεί με αυτή την 80ies pop  βαμπιρική  υποπαράγραφο,που έχουμε ανοίξει εδω στο latenightmoviecrypt.Πρώτα το “Vampire at midnight” και τώρα αυτό…φέρτε κι άλλα.

Νοσταλγοί της δεκαετίας του ’80,νοσταλγοί του flashdance,της Barbarella , των ταινιών που εκτυλίσσονται στο “Μεγάλο μήλο” ,βαμπιρολάγνοι και απανταχού σκουπιδολάγνοι,σπεύσατε…

 

Addictive Vampire trash extravaganza with 80ies pop inclinations and softcore references “Graveyard Shift” is another trash triumph that rocks hard and needs to be seen to be believed.

Night brings out the hungering people, especially a mysterious NY cab driver. He is a powerful vampire. And working the night shift brings a sultry array of sensuous passengers within his grasp. Embracing those ready to die, he controls an erratic but well-balanced vampire realm. Then unexpectedly, he discovers erotic human passion-unleashing a raging, terrorizing evil. When a slew of innocent citizens are senselessly slaughtered, the baffled police must solve a 350 year old mystery of insatiable passion.

For starters Michael A. Miranda as Stephen Tsepes is the Latin lover incarnation of the vampire myth.His steamy  and sexy portrayal of the undead cab driver is a trash apocalypse and as the rest of the plot, beggars belief.Then you have the romantic subplot between Michelle and Stephan which is really offbeat and superficial.The icing of the cake is the fact that there seems to be an entire serial killing vampire colony,consisting of strippers,female cops and petty criminals among others, deep in the heart of New York.

…Yet all these implausible little things work…

The final outcome is a grotesquely  “cheerful”and carefree cinematic experience with an arsenal of redeeming qualities:Gore,Nudity,Silly but addictive music score,average performances,but great lighting , cinematography and flashy direction make this flick a success.

Vampire at Midnight (1988)

Τρελό φέσι από τη Skouras films.Στυλιζαρισμένο όσο δεν πάει,καλογυρισμένο,αλλά φέσι του κερατά,που κουβαλάει όλα οσα λατρέψαμε και μισήσαμε ταυτοχρόνως στα 80ies.

Υπνωτιστής Βαμπίρ με Ανατολικοευρωπαική προφορά ξεπαστρεύει όμορφες παρουσίες στο Λος ‘Αντζελες μέχρι που μπαίνει στο στόχαστρο του σκληρού επιθεωρητή Σάττερ.

Ώρες-ώρες έχει φάση αυτός ο τεκές,ειδικά στην αρχή και στο τέλος του,αλλά αυτή η μίξη crime με horror κάθεται λίγο βαριά στο στομάχι,κυρίως λόγω των φτηνιάρικων ψευτοαστυνομικής φύσης συμβάσεων.Ο ρυθμός του φίλμ είναι βαθιά προβληματικός,αλλά το σκουπιδοφινάλε λυτρώνει.Το κάστ είναι για τα πανηγύρια,με μαγαλύτερο αγγούρι τον jason Williams,αλλά ο Gustav Vintas έχει γούστο ως μοντέρνο Βαμπίρ.Η φωτογραφία είναι ψαρωτική,ειδικά σε ορισμένες ατμοσφαιρικές σεκάνς,αλλά η σκηνοθεσία παρά την εμμονή στο στυλιζάρισμα,διακατέχεται,στο σύνολό της, από μια τηλεοπτική αισθητική.

Δεν ξέρω που να γείρω την πλάστιγγα με αυτό εδω.Καλό δεν είναι σε καμία των περιπτώσεων,αλλά δεν είναι και εντελώς για πέταμα.Ας είναι…

Πάντως ως προσθήκη στη Βαμπιρική μυθολογία μόνο απαρατήρητη δεν περνάει…

Already nine corpses left behind a mysterious killer, whom the press dubbed the Vampire, and the Los Angeles police still have no leads in the case. And once detective Sutter a call from a stand-up comedian called Lee Keller and claims to know the criminal.Soon he ends up dead as well.Will the vampiric killing spree continue?

A pain to sit through but with a distinct aroma of the ,oh so mighty ,80ies  and  a well crafted final reel, “Vampire at Midnight” is a well made banality or an interesting bore if you prefer,an atmospheric, yet trashy pop videoclip with some ambiguous qualities.I shit you not,even Gustav Vintas ,the titular vampire,had starred in a Madonna video back in the day.

Some scenes are pretty atmospheric and Vintas gives the performance of his life,but other than the aforementioned factors the film is an interesting idea executed in a mostly uninteresting way.The photography if delightful though,especially in the more gimmicky,dark,video-clip oriented parts of the movie

The bad news is that this film is mostly a drag.The movie starts with verve,but the 40 min. mark signals the point when the  plot starts moving in an excruciatingly sluggish pace.Combine the flaws of a TV movie with the omnipresent “laziness” of an average softcore flick and here you go,bingo!We have ended up with a monstrous creature:A slow moving,mullet headed,stylish horror meets dull TV crime flick,well crafted, but somehow pretentious 80ies piece of trash.Plus the vampire part-inclination of the villain is never explained.Bonus plus,the detective part is unbelievably dull.

I had a hard time making up my mind regarding this one.Well it has its  charm ,I guess,but it’s not for everyone…

Trash fans might enjoy this one.
