Μέγας είσαι Κύριε του trash και θαυμαστά τα έργα σου.

Το οτι θα έβρισκα ταινία Αμερικανο-Γερμανο-Νοτιο Αφρικανικής συμπαραγωγής που να κοιτάει στα μάτια τη Φιλιππινέζικη περίοδο του Bruno Mattei,μιλώντας με όρους σκουπιδίλας πάντα,ειλικρινά δεν το περίμενα.

“It appears that the Soviets are on some kind of Laser mission” ξεστομίζει γελοιόφατσα-χαρτογιακάς της CIA και ο Brandon Lee,o οποίος δεν έζησε για να δει αυτό το πράγμα να προβάλεται αφού παίχτηκε κατευθείαν στο Βίντεο μετά το θάνατο του ηθοποιού,(exploitation or what?)ξαμολιέται στην Κούβα και τη Ναμίμπια(?)ώστε να εντοπίσει τον Γερμανό καθηγητή Braun(Ernest Borgnine με ψεύτικη Γερμανική πγοφογά,Trash oder was?)ειδικό στις εφαρμογές της τεχνολογίας laser.Σε όλα αυτά παίζει ρόλο μπαλαντέρ η κλοπή ενος διαμαντιού 326 καρατιών από την KGB,προκειμένου να χρησιμοποιηθεί στην κατασκευή  πυρηνικού υπερόπλου laser.

΄Αλλο να σας το περιγράφω,άλλο να το βιώνετε…Αφού το παρόν είναι υπόδειγμα 80ies δυτικού σκουπιδο-action.Ψυχροπολεμικά κλισέ,κακοί Ρώσοι,εκρήξεις,απίθανοι αξιωματούχοι της CIA,μπουφόνοι μπολσεβίκοι στρατιώτες,ενας Ρώσος Λοχαγός με το όνομα Καλασνίκοφ που δεν λέει να πεθάνει με τίποτα, μέχρι που τον πατάνε με φορτηγό,εκρήξεις και άλλες εκρήξεις,unintentional comedy,λάθη στο μοντάζ,σεναριακή ψυχεδέλεια(από την Κούβα ως τη Ναμίμπια δεν το λές και ένα τσιγάρο δρόμο)και ερμηνείες βγαλμένες από τα ένδοξα 80ies.Γενικά όλα στο “Laser Mission” είναι εξόχως απαράδεκτα.Τελοσπάντων,η ταινία είναι πανέμορφη γι’αυτό που είναι,ούτως ή άλλως δε νομίζω  ο Beau Davis να είχε την ψευδαίσθηση πως είναι ο Ταρκόφσκι.

Eιδική μνεία πρέπει να αποδωθεί στο έπος soundtrack “mercenary man” από DIRE STRAITS(!!!) Ε,ρε τι βρίσκει κανείς με 0,50 Ευρώ!!!

 

 

“Laser Mission” is an action dynamite,as goofy and inane as it might be,it’s still a dynamite and in my eyes it’s also a textbook of how to make an effective ,if trashy action flick.

Bad Russians,check.Bad Ass American agents/commandos,check.Explosions,check.A screaming,yelling and grimacing Werner Pochath,check.A busty blonde, if untalented female lead,check.A young talented actor like Brandon Lee trying his best as a poor man’s Van Damme or Lundgren,check.The agenda also includes a frenetic cinematic pace,continuity and editing errors,crisp and clear cinematography and last but not least, a cheesy but very addictive 80ies rock soundtrack

The plot concerns a mercenary named Michael Gold (Lee) who is sent to convince Dr. Braun (Borgnine), a Laser specialist, to defect to the United States before the KGB acquire him and use both his talent and a stolen diamond to create a nuclear weapon. Dr. Braun is captured by the KGB and Gold is sent on a mission to rescue both him and the diamond. He has to enlist the help of Dr. Braun’s daughter Alissa (Debi Monahan), whom he eventually falls for. The pair confront Col. Kalishnakov (Graham Clarke), whom they subdue by hitting him with a truck in the climax of this story.

This one’s up to par with the grandiose Mattei Philippino movies(Strike Commando,Double Target,Born to fight). 80ies B-movie fans will definitely have a ball.

Dark Sunday (1976)

Πεσσιμιστική ταινία εκδίκησης,βουτηγμένη σε μια αδιαπέραστη ατμόσφαιρα διαφθοράς,με το συναίσθημα της απειλής να καραδοκεί σε κάθε καρέ του φιλμ.

Με εμφανέστατες επιρροές  από αντίστοιχες ταινίες του είδους,η ταινία θα μπορούσε άνετα να λέγεται “Ο Παπάς”(στο πνεύμα του “Τaxi Driver”)αφού πραγματεύεται την ιστορία ενος ιερωμένου που πέφτει θύμα στα εκδικητικά σχέδια μιας συμμορίας εμπόρων ναρκωτικών.Οι κακοποιοί προκειμένου να συνετίσουν τον Παπά, ώστε να μην βοηθάει τοξικομανείς και να μην κάνει κύρηγμα κατά των ναρκωτικών , κάνουν τη γυναίκα και τους δύο γιούς του “σουρωτήρι” κατά τη διάρκεια ενός πικ-νικ.Με τον ένα γιό του σε κώμα,τη γυναίκα του και τον άλλο γιό του νεκρούς,ο Πάτερ ξεχνά τους πασιφιστικούς του τρόπους και μετατρέπεται σε vigilante.Θα εκτελέσει όλα τα “υποκείμενα” που εμπλέκονται στη διακίνηση ναρκωτικών,αλλά στο τέλος, η διαφθορά θα αποδειχθεί ανίκητη.

Καλό το σκαρί,αλλά με λίγες παραπάνω (σεναριακές) τρύπες απ’οσες μπορεί να αντέξει ο θεατής.Μοιραία,η βάρκα κάπου μπάζει νερά,ο ρυθμός της πλεύσης παρουσιάζει σκαμπανεβάσματα, αλλά η ταινία φτάνει μετά κόπων και βασάνων στον τελικό προορισμό της.

Ευτυχώς,η κατάμαυρη ατμόσφαιρα,που διέπει εν γένει το Αμερικάνικο ανεξάρτητο σινεμά της δεκαετίας του ’70(βλέπε:Born to win,The Panic in Needle Park μεταξύ άλλων)κάνει το “dark Sunday” να φαίνεται αρκετά πιο ενδιαφέρον από αυτό που στην πραγματικότητα είναι.

Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα είναι σχετικά άνισο,με το πρώτο μισό της ταινίας να παρουσιάζει μεγαλύτερο ενδιαφέρον από το δεύτερο.Ίσως αν το “Dark Sunday” ήταν 20 λεπτά μικρότερο τα πράγματα να είχαν περισότερο ενδιαφέρον.

Όπως και να’χει οι φανς των ταινιών εκδίκησης και της Grindhouse αισθητικής θα την εκτιμήσουν δεόντως.

 

Gritty and downbeat revenge thriller is the name of the game here.”Dark Sunday” has its moments,especially during the first half of the movie,but loses steam during the final reel and the final outcome is that of an uneven film.

Filth,corruption and the inhuman face of the typical drug & crime infested  Metropolis,as presented in independent and mainstream American films of that era,with examples spanning  from “born to win” to “Taxi Driver” & “Serpico”,are also present in “Dark Sunday,but they’re somehow muffled by the incoherent storyline.

 

Storyline:

Running, out of his church, a rehabilitation center for homeless and drug-addicted youths Reverend Lowery gets the local drug pushers mad at him by taking away their costumers. Lowery goes out on the mean streets and shows the drug addicts a way out of their addictions by turning to and believing in God and the good that’s in themselves. 
Setting Lowery up for elimination the mob gets him and his wife and kids alone at a picnic by the river and blast them all away with only Lowery and his son Jody surviving. Recovering from four gun-shots with his voice gone, due to a bullet shattering his voice-box, Lowery is so despondent that he slips into a drunken stupor not even wanting to see his crippled son Jody at the hospital.
Getting to know at the local watering hole that he spends, drinking away his troubles, almost all his free or non-sleeping time Lowery gets friendly with a hooker, with a heart of gold, who calls herself Julie. Lowery ends up staying at Julie’s place for days on end without as much as even thinking of having sex with her even though Julie is very accommodating to him, she doesn’t know that he was happily married with two children and a man of God to boot. For some strange reason Julie thinks that Lowey is either a cop or soldier who due to his gunshot wounds is unable to preform in bed.
Lowery gets a new lease on life when he spots this local drug pusher the Candyman and follows him into the town bus terminal. Getting the Candyman alone in the mens room Lowery clobbers him with his cane and then stuffs his head, together with his drugs, down the toilet bowel drowning him. After dispatching the Candyman Lowery begins a one man war against the drug pushers who were responsible for the death of his wife and other son Eric, as well as destroying his life, until he just about cleaned up the entire city.

All in all,a worthy addition to your B-movie & grindhouse collection,but an uneven flick.The first half of the film is very intense and prepares the viewer for a true cult movie experience, while the second sort of doesn’t live up to the expectations .Well, it’s not the first uneven movie you’ll watch.Fans of grindhouse cinema will most probably dig this one…

Tomb of the unknown character actor vol 6: Zora Kerova

August 11, 1950 in Prague, Czechoslovakia

Most probably an iconic figure for the majority of Euro horror enthusiasts,Kerova ,initially a dancer turned to actress ,had a quite successful career throughout the 80ies and worked in the softcore and horror genres with directors such as:Joe D’Amato,Lucio Fulci,Umberto Lenzi. Mostly remembered for her roles  in spaghetti horror cult classics,namely :Cannibal Ferox (1981),The New York Ripper (1982) and Anthropophagus(1980).After the end of the 80ies her appearances became sporadic and she disappeared from the show business as countless other genre actors  and actresses did.Her image as she is seen hanging on hooks by her breasts  in “Cannibal ferox” has remained vivid  in the minds of B-Movie fans forever.

Dark Age (1987)

cast:John Jarratt, Nikki Coghill, Max Phipps 

Ισχυρό Ozploitation με(πειστικό) δολοφόνο Κροκόδειλο,αδίστακτους λαθροκυνηγούς,Αβορίγινες, πρώιμο Αυστραλιανό φολκλόρ και φυσικά αρκετό exploitation.Kαλό χαρμάνι δηλαδή,ειδικά σε συνδιασμό με την ψαρωτική κινηματογράφιση και σκηνοθεσία.Όλοι οι εμπλεκόμενοι παράγοντες συντελούν στη δημιουργία μιας ταινίας υπέροχης οπτικά,που επίσης ευνοείται και από έναν διαβολεμένα νευρώδη ρυθμό .

Τα gore και  exploitative στοιχεία είναι απολαυστικά,οι ερμηνείες του κάστ είναι μια χαρά και το soundtrack είναι ευχάριστο.Με λίγα λόγια,το “Dark Age” είναι μια λαχταριστή εκδοχή του jaws α λα down under,διαδραματίζεται στο Queensland(άγριο location με τεράστιες αντιθέσεις,άλλος ένας άσσος στο μανίκι της ταινίας)με τον τιτάνα κροκόδειλο Numunwari να αποτελεί την πέτρα του σκανδάλου και να σκορπίζει τον τρόμο στον τοπικό πληθυσμό.

Συστήνεται ανεπιφύλακτα ,αν και είναι σχετικά δύσκολο να βρεθεί…

 

In Australia’s Northern Territory, a massive saltwater crocodile is attacking and killing people. A ranger is assigned to deal with the killer crocodile, but he finds himself at odds with the local Aborigines, who believe the crocodile contains the spirit of their past, and want this goliath-sized beast preserved. The ranger must work with the Aborigines to develop a plan to respect their wishes as well as protecting the local residents threatened by the crocodile. 

Αwesome outback set Australian killer crocodile film that gives other killer animal film like Lamberto Bava’s “Monster Shark” a run for their money.

Impeccably filmed and directed “Dark Age” is an eye candy,which is also aided by the harsh Northern Australia locations (swamps,billabongs,deserts,rocky mountains).The performances by the cast are mostly above average.

All in all,”Dark Age” is a great horror/adventure film that is, unfortunately ,excruciatingly rare and needs to be discovered by a wider audience.Fully recommended.

Rapid Fire (1989)

Prior cast:Joe Spinell, Ron Waldron, Michael Wayne Πιο κλασσικό κι απ’τη φέτα late 80ies actioner από το βετεράνο του είδους David Prior.To “Rapid fire” κουβαλάει ένα κάρο κλισέ:Κακούς Άραβες τρομοκράτες,Κομάντα Αμερικανούς βετεράνους,καθάρματα μισθοφόρους,υπερόπλα (για τους trigger-happy θεατές),εκρήξεις,λίγο sex και γενικά δεν το πολυκουράζει με “καινοτομίες”.Γενικά είτε βλέπει κάποιος τέτοιου είδους ταινίες, είτε δεν βλέπει.Μέση λύση δεν υπάρχει και αν υπήρχε,τότε το παρόν σίγουρα δε θα μπορούσε να τη βρει.Διεκπεραιωτικά καλοφτιαγμένο για τα standards του είδους,αλλά  τυπικό και flat,με αποτέλεσμα να αποξενώνει τους μη μυημένους στην κινηματογραφική γλώσσα του action.Γενικό συμπέρασμα:Ενω το φίλμ είναι καλούτσικο για το είδος του, δεν κουβαλάει καμία ιδιαιτερότητα ,κατά συνέπεια ουδείς εκτός των βαμμένων και “βλαμμένων” με τα 80ies action movies,θα μπορούσε να ασχοληθεί με τη συγκεκριμένη ταινία. Mike Thompson is a former U.S. government agent whom is called on by his no-nonsense ex-employer Hanson to stop a terrorist named Mustapha who breaks out of a maximum security military prison aboard a battleship with the help from his aide Eddy Williams a former agent-turned-mercenary armed with an unstoppable rapid-firing, multi-use machine gun whom the U.S. government wants back at any cost. Mike is forced to rely on his former partner-in-crime Pappy, and a CIA agent named Corle, to help him try to track down Eddy hoping to lead him to Mustapha before they can plan their next terrorist strike. Quite cool for what it is,if unoriginal, “Rapid Fire” delivers what it actually promises,but on second thought it doesn’t really differ from countless other similar films that were released during the same period. All the well known characteristics of the genre are present in the movie:Wooden acting,cold war aesthetics,your typical bad Arabs,cool action sequences.But we have seen all these before.Haven’t we? It’s worth noticing that this was the final role in the career of the late great Joe Spinell,who passed away 6 days after he finished his parts for this one.Maybe this is worth the “price of admission” for the most of you.At least it was for me

Tomb of the unknown character actor vol 5: Daniela Doria

Daniela Doria was another unsung heroine of the Italian genre cinema.Her delicate Scandinavian like beauty fascinated the viewers.The “ordeals” she suffered by following the directorial guidelines of none other than the almighty maestro of gore,namely Lucio Fulci scarred the minds of the audience forever.Best remembered for her memorable role as the prostitute Kitty in “New York Ripper”,where she was literally hacked to pieces by the titular ripper, as well as for her appearance in “City of the living dead” where she manages to regurgitate the entire intestinal track of a lamb,creating this way one of the most astonishing scenes in the history of the horror cinema.

Ανεκδιήγητη ,πλήν μεγαλειώδης ,trash-ιά από τον μαίτρ του kung fu/martial arts υποείδους Joseph Lai.

Περίληψη:Ο Νίντζα Γκόρντον χρησιμοποιεί την τέχνη του για να κερδίζει λεφτά από στοιχήματα σε διάφορες μονομαχίες.Έτσι μπλέκει με τον υπόκοσμο και ο Ασημένιος Δράκος που αναλαμβάνει την υπόθεση έχει να αντιμετωπίσει τώρα την απληστία του Γκόρντον και τα σχέδια του υποκόσμου.

NINJAAAA! Aναφωνεί και δεν πιστεύει αυτά που λέει ο στόμας του,ο δυστυχής Richard Harrison,σε μια από τις πιο εξωφρενικές ταινίες πολεμικών τεχνών ever.Φυσικά,τούτη η παραγωγή φέρει την υπογραφή της IFD films του Joseph Lai,οπότε μιλάμε για την απόλυτη exploitation συνταγή όσον αφορά το filmaking.

Η υπόθεση είναι καθαρά για τους τύπους και τα πάντα οδηγούν σε μάχες μεταξύ Ninjas που φοράνε πολύχρωμες στολές με γραμμένη τη λέξη Ninja στην κουκούλα τους,έτσι για να μην ξεχνιόμαστε.

 Ninja Gordon uses his craft to earn  money by betting on various fights .As a result, he messes up with the underworld and Silver Dragon,who is  in charge of the case has to  face  Gordon’s greed and the plans of the underworld for retaliation.

Below the debris of the once prolific Hong Kong genre film industry lie the names of Thomas Tang,Godfrey Ho,Joseph Lai and Philip Ko carved in golden plates.This one is one of the most hilarious,thus entertaining martial arts films in the history of the genre.This is bad cinema,trashy to its very core and all the characteristics of a typical IFD films’ production can be found in “Cobra vs Ninja” in their superlative form.This film is a quintessential Z-grade movie and it comes with the highest recommendation for all the wrong reasons.

 

Double Crosser (1990)

Αν ο Godfrey Ho και ο Joseph Lai είναι τα δυο τρίτα της Αγίας Τριάδας του trash, τότε ο Arizal,  εξ Ινδονησίας, μπορεί  να καταλάβει επάξια τη θέση του θείου βρέφους. Για να κατανοήσει κανείς πόσο κάλτ είναι το Ινδονησιακό τρας, πρέπει να δει ταινίες σαν το “Intruder” του Jopi Βurnama και τα θεικά : “Final Score” , “Lethal Hunter” , “Stabilizer” του Arizal . Συνοψίζω μια Ινδονησιακή  action ταινία και καταγράφουμε τα ακόλουθα:Σουρεαλιστική βία, ακραία stunts, πανάθλιο out of sync Αγγλικό dubbing,το οποίο σημειωτέον, ηχογραφούν τύποι με αστείες(εσκεμμένα?)φωνητικές  χροιές, προσχηματικά σενάρια και παρουσία άθλιων , πλήν cult  ηθοποιών όπως:Peter O’Brian ,Christopher Mitchum, Mike Abbott.

Όλα αυτά ισχύουν στον υπερθετικό και στο “Doublecrosser”.

O Peter O’Brian είναι ο Jack,χήρος ,πρώην ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ, άσσος στις πολεμικές τέχνες ,πατέρας της τυφλής Fiona,κουνιάδος του Leo επίσης άσσου στις πολεμικές τέχνες. Οι δύο άνδρες πέφτουν στα δίχτυα του Didier,καθάρματος με έφεση στο στήσιμο παράνομων αγώνων μπόξ . Όπως αντιλαμβάνεστε όλο αυτό το team κάνει, καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια του φίλμ, ολάκερη  την Ινδονησία καλοκαιρινή .

Διάλογοι βγαλμένοι από το χειρότερο εφιάλτη επαγγελματία σεναριογράφου («η σιωπή είναι εκκωφαντική» αναφωνεί τσιράκι ναρκομαφιόζου, πρίν δεχτεί πέσιμο από αντίπαλη συμμορία και διαλυθεί το σύμπαν στα εξ’ων συνετέθη) ,παρανοικό/ντελιριακό μοντάζ, καρτουνίστικες σκηνές μάχης, κοντινά στο «χαιτέο» Peter O’Brian και στη «σφιγμένη» οδοντοστοιχία του και πολλά άλλα απίστευτα, κάνουν  τούτη την ταινία και όλες τις προαναφερθείσες υπερδημιουργίες  must see για το μύστη της απόλυτης trash αποχαλίνωσης.

Μιλάμε για ταινίες που συγκρίνονται μόνο με αντίστοιχες Τούρκικες παραγωγές ,ο νοών νοήτω…

 

Another majestic trash triumph by Arizal,the Indonesian equivalent of Godfrey Ho/Joseph Lai/Philip Ko team.Although slightly inferior than masterpieces of absurdity like : “Stabilizer” and “Lethal Hunter” , “Doublecrosser” is still a treat for the hardcore trash fan,the one who lustfully indulges in the pleasures of Turkish/Hong Kong & Philippino productions.

If you know of Arizal work, you pretty much know what to expect from “Doublecrosser”.First of all,Peter O’Brian and his mullet:The master and guardian angel of all action actors rigid and wooden.What should we mention about Peter almighty  first?His facial expressions,his movements,his stunts?What else do you need?The guy is THE god of Bad cinema.Then you have Priscilla Patsy:Beautiful Indonesian starlet that had had her fair share of appearances in Arizal’s flicks.Every single other thing you love in Arizal’s movies is also here:Crazy stunts,surreal English dubbing,goofy fight scenes,goofy villains,crocodiles,scorpions,explosions,bad acting.The whole package is here.

If you dig the sheer madness present in :Hong Kong,Turkish,Philippino productions,

then do yourselves a favour and watch Arizal’s movies.You’ll discover a whole new cinematic universe unfolding right before your very eyes…

Killing birds (1987)

Ώρα ήταν να κλείσω, μάλλον , οριστικά τους λογαριασμούς μου μ’ αυτό το υπερβολικά άνισο, πλην  διασκεδαστικό φίλμ παραγωγής(και συν- σκηνοθεσίας) Joe D’Amato.

To “killing birds” χαίρει μιας σχετικής αποδοχής για δύο λόγους. Πρωτίστως λόγω του ότι υπάγεται (δια της προσκολλήσεως) στην κατηγορία των Ιταλικών Zombie movies,γεγονός που ενισχύει την cult υπόστασή του ,δευτερευόντως λόγω της σύνδεσης του μεγάλου Joe με την ταινία.

Bέβαια to “Killing birds” δεν είναι καν zombie movie,πόσο μάλλον «καλή»ταινία.

Η υπόθεση είναι για σφαλιάρες ,οι ερμηνείες είναι ορισμοί των Αγγλικών όρων :Campy,wooden,cheesy.Η όλη όψη της ταινίας χαρακτηρίζεται από μια μιζέρια, αφού είναι εμφανέστατα low budget(τυπικό προιόν της Filmirage),ενώ  κατά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της αναλώνεται σε σεναριακά κλισέ ανακυκλώνοντας σκηνές από άλλες ταινίες. Κατά συνέπεια μπορεί επιεικώς να χαρακτηριστεί, ως προς το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι του, σαν ένα μετριότατο φίλμ τύπου “Poltergeist”,με λίγα ζόμπι να κόβουν βόλτες στο set,για το τζέρτζελο της ιστορίας.

Παρ’όλα αυτά ,η επιβλητική εναρκτήρια σεκάνς και η παρουσία κάποιων καλοφτιαγμένων γκραν-γκινιολικών  σκηνών, ειδικά στο τελευταίο κομμάτι της, δημιουργούν ένταση, δένουν καλά με την κατά κύριο λόγο “haunted house” θεματική και σώζουν την ταινία από την  απόλυτη αδιαφορία.

Το ρεζουμέ της ιστορίας είναι ότι η ταινία αξίζει να θεαθεί σαν ένα κομμάτι της ιστορίας του Euro horror.Σε σημεία είναι εκνευριστικά επίπεδη και προβλέψιμη, αλλά μπορώ να σας αναφέρω άπειρα Euro Horror «σκουπίδια» με τα ίδια τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά, που έγιναν cult.Oι στιγμές αυθεντικής έντασης και πηγαίου τρόμου θα ανταμείψουν τον υπομονετικό και πάντα ανεκτικό οπαδό του trashy cinema.

 

Αnother lesson in campy,inept and very low budget cinema taught by Joe D’Amato and Claudio Lattanzi.While “Killing birds” is not very bad on the technical side,as it’s directed with panache and the production team managed to use the Louisianna location in  a surprisingly effective way,it’s so much lacking in the originality sector ,that it painfully shows that its creators had no oher ambition while making it, than selling it properly in the video market.

In Louisiana, a soldier returning from Vietnam finds his wife in bed with her lover and he kills them both as well as a couple of friends, but he is attacked by a bird and he loses his eyes. Years later, the bodies have not been found and the former soldier is now a bird specialist (Dr. Fred Brown) living in a house nearby the swamp. When a group of college students go to the swamp on an assignment to research a species of woodpecker that is almost extinct, they head to Dr. Brown’s house to get some tips of how to find the rare bird. They drive through the swamp where they find the house where the murders happened and they decide to stay there. During the night, weird things happen.

The opening sequence is very well made and it manages to create a genuine suspenseful atmosphere,but the following 40 minutes are of terrible quality.Cheap video fodder set in a University Campus,accompanied by equally dreadful Carlo Maria Cordio softcore score,dragging sluggishly in its attempt to keep the  running time along the lines of a feature film.The last thirty minutes are extremely intense,with some zombies thrown in,for the good measure.

All that remains is an extremely uneven result.It is infuriating to witness scenes that could partake in a much better film than “Raptors” really is,while other sequences,especially the University Campus material,are nothing but a waste of film stock.

The performances by the ,mostly unknown,cast  don’t add to the film quality at all.

Euro horror fans have already watched this one due to the D’Amato connection.The rest should have a look too,as it’s a part of the Euro horror history,but they are advised not to raise the bar too high,as “killing birds” is hardly a masterpiece.If you need to encounter a wings n’ feathers horror experience by all means,then ”Beaks” by Rene Cardona Jr. is a more solid trashy experience.

Το Γερμανικό ανεξάρτητο cinema μας έχει προσφέρει στιγμές ιδιαίτερων κινηματογραφικών συγκινήσεων, πάντα με κοινό παρονομαστή το συνδυασμό ιδιαίτερων σκηνών φρίκης απεικονισμένων με μια  arthouse κινηματογραφική γλώσσα. Ο μηδενισμός και η αποστασιοποιημένη, σχεδόν κλινική απεικόνιση της ζοφερής πραγματικότητας, όπως την είδαν  δημιουργοί σαν τον Buttgereit έχουν, καλώς ή κακώς χαρακτηρίσει το Γερμανικό cinema τρόμου και έχουν  χαραχθεί με γράμματα ανεξίτηλα στα χρονικά του παγκόσμιου ανεξάρτητου κινηματογράφου.

Το “Suicide!” του Raoul W.Heimrich είναι προιόν παρόμοιας αισθητικής και φιλοσοφίας, δημιουργημένο όμως δυστυχώς από έναν κινηματογραφιστή με λιγότερο ταλέντο από τον Aυστριακό Κargl(Angst)ή τον προαναφερθέντα Buttgereit.Mοιραία η ταινία είναι άνιση, ενώ και στο τεχνικό κομμάτι της είναι αρκετά ωμή, χωρίς παρόλα αυτά να απογοητεύει τον οπαδό του arthouse τρόμου.

Ζευγάρι Γερμανών κινηματογραφιστών επιδίδεται στο φιλμάρισμα ανθρώπων, οι οποίοι επιθυμούν να δώσουν τέλος στη ζωή τους. Ο θεατής γίνεται μάρτυρας της κατάβασης του ζεύγους στον απόλυτο κυνισμό και στην αποκτήνωση και βλέπει τις αναστολές των κινηματογραφιστών να δίνουν τη θέση τους στην απόλυτη ιδιοτέλεια και σε μια ακόρεστη δίψα για ολοένα και περισσότερο αίμα.

Η ταινία παρουσιάζεται σαν χρονικό, η φωτογραφία είναι ταιριαστά μουντή(πιθανόν να γυρίστηκε σε βίντεο)  η πλοκή ξεδιπλώνεται με ντοκιμαντερίστικο  τρόπο και τα πρώτα δεκαπέντε λεπτά της παγώνουν το αίμα. Η ρεαλιστικότατη καταγραφή των τριών πρώτων αυτοκτονιών θα κάνει το θεατή να αναρωτηθεί αν βλέπει κάποιο snuff movie ή όχι, κατόπιν τούτων το shock value δίνει τη θέση του στην επανάληψη και η ταινία δεν εκπληρώνει τις προσδοκίες του θεατή στο βαθμό που θα μπορούσε.

Αυτό συμβαίνει διότι η πλοκή ξεδιπλώνεται με προβλέψιμο τρόπο και το μέλημα του Heimrich είναι να εστιάσει στυλιστικά στις αυτοκτονίες που παρουσιάζει, χωρίς να εμβαθύνει ιδιαίτερα στις ζωές των αυτοχείρων(βλ.der Todesking) ή των κινηματογραφιστών.

Παρά τις ατέλειές της, η ταινία δεν είναι κακή. Έχει  σάρκα στα οστά της, είναι φτιαγμένη με πάθος και συστήνεται στους οπαδούς του ιδιαίτερου Γερμανικού στυλ της δεκαετίας του ’80.

 

Quite interesting underground German horror film, shot documentary style.It has its moments,but it’s far from being a masterpiece like f.e “Angst” or Joerg Buttgereit’s films.While the technical side of “Suicide” is a little bit crass,there are moments in the film that shock wth their nihilistic realism.The ending of the movie is predictably cynical.

 

The main problem of the film is the superficial presentation of the overall material.as Heimrich seems to only care about how to set up the suicides of the cast rather than creating a suffocating atmosphere or to analyse somehow the cases of the people who choose to end their lives.

 

Well someone shouldn’t expect another movie like “Nekromantik” but this is,despite its flaws, an interesting film
