The Gate (1987)
directed by:Tibor Takács
cast:Stephen Dorff, Christa Denton, Louis Tripp
Closer to children-friendly 80ies smash hits like “Goonies” or “Gremlins” than to heavy hitters like “Evil dead” , “The Gate” is a very effective coming of age horror film, that in no occasion gets too intense or downbeat, thanks to its PG-13 rating. In fact this is one of the the few occasions when a relatively toned down horror film remains effective without losing its grip. The Gate is a definite trip down memory lane and a cultural statement very reminiscent of its time. Hence it became the cult classic it is.
Two young boys on the verge of puberty, the home alone for the weekend Glen and his nerdy heavy metal kid sidekick, Terry accidentally release a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from a hole in a suburban backyard. What follows is a classic battle between good and evil as the two kids along with Glen’s teenage sister Alexandra struggle to overcome a nightmarish hell that literally begins to take over the Earth.
Demons unleashed, invocations and exorcisms based on the instructions found on Heavy metal record gatefold sleeve, an ode to friendship and other gloriously 80ies traits, plus some quite effective (for that era) effects, made “The Gate” a quite big box-office hit and a video rental store cult classic. It’d be an understatement to say that this VHS was to be found in each and every mom n’ pop video rental store up until the mid 90ies and even if the glorious days of olde are long gone, the Gate remains a heck of a nostalgia trip and a cool movie that can send the viewer back to puberty. I wish I could be a thirteen-year old again pressing play on the VCR with that movie in for the first time, but even seen in hindsight “The Gate” is a damn good movie.
It’s got its fair share of goofy moments, spooky set pieces , even some gory effects and the premise remains as engaging as ever.
Cult horror collectors probably already own this.
