Ruckus (1980)
directed by:Max Kleven
cast:Dirk Benedict, Linda Blair, Richard Farnsworth
Another Blair-sploitation curio that melds action with Hillbilly commedy and an insane Bluegrass film score. Some say it predated Rambo:First Blood. Even if there is common ground between the two films, it’d be far-fetched for someone to say that Ruckus is as downbeat as the Stallone triumph of a film. There is too much comedy and lack of grimness to be found here and the romantic elements are perhaps too sugary in a cute manner, even if they pass as crucial for the development of the story.
Kyle Hanson is a Vietnam veteran whose traumatic war-time experiences have left him unable to rejoin mainstream society. When Kyle, unkempt and in dirty fatigues, stops in a small town for some food, the local bullies can’t wait for an opportunity to harass him. After Kyle uses his Special Forces training to escape the bullies, he becomes the subject of a community-wide manhunt. Only Jenny Bellows, a local girl whose husband was declared missing in action in Vietnam, is willing to give Kyle a chance.
You can’t really say that Linda Blair isn’t trying here. Her character is likeable and her on-screen chemistry with Dirk Benedict could have been worse. Benedict’s performance as the shell-shocked veteran later tamed by his relationship with the Blair character is quite solid but what starts as a quite serviceable portrayal of a mentally unstable veteran later gives its place to a barrage of implausible events that beggar belief.
While comedy is not really the downside of a film like Ruckus , it doesn’t really do any service to the material either, neither does the inept, caricature-esque depiction of the local hick townsfolk that want Kyle the veteran, off their county for good and presumably away from Jenny’s embrace.
In general, the grimmer a movie about post war trauma is, the better. The subject matter itself is too heavy to be reduced to campy and goofy action fun. While Ruckus isn’t by any means a cardinal sin of film making it’ll not address to anyone else but the grindhouse and the Linda Blair completist. While not inherently bad , Combat Shock and Jacob’s Ladder it is not.
