High Crime (1973) aka “La Polizia incrimine la legge assolve” “The Marseilles Connection”
directed by: Enzo G. Castellari
cast:Franco Nero, James Whitmore, Delia Boccardo, Stefania Girolami
There are always these movies that propel a certain cinematic style/sub-genre , become blueprints of it and get copied at Nauseam. High crime is one of those films . It may be not the best entry of poliziottesco film ever, but it is a quintessential piece of film making which also displayed a tour de-force of cinematic craftmanship courtesy of Enzo G.Castellari for the first time. However as not everything in life consists of peaches and cream , Castellari was accused of promoting populist , right-wing ideas and a simplistic j’accuse against the corruption of the state in the tumultuous Seventies era Italy.
A Lebanese drug dealer arrives in Genoa and Vice-Commissioner Belli (Nero) soon tracks him down. After a long car chase, Belli manages to arrest him. However, when the prisoner is being taken to the police station, the police car is bombed before it reaches its target. The Lebanese and four policemen die in the hit, but Belli survives. Belli then goes to Cafiero (Rey), an old-fashioned gangster who claims to have transformed into a peaceful gardener, to question about the bombing and it turns out that there is a new player in town. Cafiero decides to take care of the new gang before the police get to them. His task turns out to be more difficult when his trusted man, Rico (Daniel Martín), turns out to be a mole working for the unknown new gangsters.
Belli’s boss, Commissioner Aldo Scavino (Whitmore), has put together a dossier on the city’s mafia connections, but thinks that there is not enough hard evidence to take down all the gangsters from top to down. After several discussions with Belli, he finally agrees to take the dossier to the district attorney. However, he is murdered and the dossier is stolen. Belli now takes over Scavino’s seat as the Commissioner and eventually finds the murderer. The murderer names Umberto Griva (Duilio Del Prete) as his boss, as Belli expected. When Griva’s brother Franco (Silvano Tranquilli) is found murdered, it seems that someone with even higher political connections is trying to take over the city’s drug trafficking.
Castellari was ahead of the general game as a director and was one of the first directors to employ and patent cinematic techniques that became blueprints of action cinema. Formulaic storyline aside, the treatment was based around the murder of Luigi Calabresi that shocked and appalled the Italian public, Castellari was also incredibly lucky to cast a certain Franco Nero for the commissario Belli lead part., as Nero is simply firing in all cylinders here and his dynamic, oftentimes ,over-the-top portrayal of a hard-as-nails , incorruptible commissario , became a synonym of the “commissioner” part in those Italian films. Hell…Maurizio Merli even built a carreer out of the Nero blueprint.
Justifiably and deservedly, this flick was a huge hit in its time of release , kicked the floodgates of Eurocrime and has become a cult classic eversince.
