Με την ιαχή-τυπικό παράδειγμα του πόσο αθώο ήταν το bullying κάποτε- “you are a female” να αντηχεί ακόμα στα αυτιά του γράφοντος,ας παραθέσουμε μερικές σκέψεις για το ταπεινού προυπολογισμού πλήν απόλυτα επιτυχημένο 80ies giallo του Ιταλού σκηνοθέτη Lamberto Bava,γιού του επίσης σκηνοθέτη-στυλοβάτη του Ιταλικού genre cinema,παμμέγιστου Mario Bava.

Η πλοκή: O Bruno είναι ένας νέος,ταλαντούχος μουσικοσυνθέτης.Του έχει ανατεθεί η σύνθεση του μουσικού θέματος για μια ταινία τρόμου που γυρίζει μια φίλη του σκηνοθέτιδα.Απομονώνεται σε μια βίλλα στα προάστια προκειμένου να συγκεντρωθεί στη σύνθεση,αλλά απρόοπτες επισκέψεις και πολλά πτώματα διαταράσσουν την περισυλλογή και την προσήλωση του νεαρού μουσικού.

Υπόδειγμα σκηνοθετικής οικονομίας,αποτελεσματικής εκτέλεσης και καλώς εννοούμενου στυλιζαρίσματος,το “A blade in the Dark” είναι ένα κερδισμένο στοίχημα για το Lamberto Bava αφού καταφέρνει με το budget μιας τηλεταινίας(αυτός ήταν ο αρχικός σχεδιασμός της παραγωγής) αφενός να κάνει μια “κανονική” ταινία και αφετέρου να την καταστήσει και ένα από τα καλύτερα gialli της δεκαετίας του ’80.Το σασπένς κλιμακώνεται με στρωτό ρυθμό,η βία δεν είναι πανταχού παρούσα,αλλά όταν υπάρχει είναι στημένη με τόσο καλό τρόπο που θυμίζει την αντίληψη του Τιτάνα Dario Argento σε ταινίες της μεσαίας περιόδου του,όπως το “Tenebre”.

Μεγάλο σουξεδάκι τούτο εδώ για την εποχή του.Ο Bava θα επαναλάμβανε την ίδια επιτυχημένη προσέγγιση με όρους τηλεταινίας,στο φανταστικό “Morirai a Mezzanotte” του 1986,δυστυχώς δεν μπορούμε να πούμε το ίδιο για ανοσιουργήματα του ιδίου όπως το “Graveyard Disturbance”.

Very effective,late Giallo entry by Lamberto Bava.

A composer, working in isolation on a score for a horror movie meets two women who used to know his house’s former tenant. When the women disappear, he’s forced to look into the film he’s working on to determine what happened to them, and who’s responsible.

 

I bet It  should have demanded respectable amounts of courage and faith by Bava to make this movie what it is.Of course the director and the production team apply a series of very important shortcuts-gimmicks that are absolutely crucial if someone wants to keep a movie budget modest.Namely:The plot revolves around a certain place (The villa),they cast as few actors as possible and they avoid the use of exterior shots opting for interior ones that are among others well-shot and create a claustrophobic feeling.

This means the formula is pretty simple,but it demands panache and craftmanship from the director and the technical unit to make it work.Undoubtedly Bava and co. succeeded in the aforementioned sector.This little flick is a very stylish exercise in the 80ies Giallo aesthetics,very close to movies like “Tenebre” by Dario Argento.The only thing that make me smile in disbelief is the ever present average performances by the cast and the ever atrocious English dubbing track of the film…

Other than that “A blade in the Dark” is a rewarding viewing experience.

 

Delirium  aka “Le foto di Gioia”(1987)

Τα σπάω ασύστολα!!!Εκστασιάζομαι με κιτσάτη δήθεν μοδάτη 80ies υπερβολή.Τα σπάω με το γεγονός οτι η Σερένα Γκράντι(Είδωλο!!!)έκανε καριέρα(μόνο εκείνη την εποχή θα μπορούσε) και φυσικά βγάζω το καπέλο μου στο Bava,ο οποίος κατόρθωσε με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες να μας παραδώσει άλλη μια καλογυρισμένη και στυλάτη ταινία.

Η πλοκή:H Gioia πρώην πορνοστάρ,είναι πλέον ιδιοκτήτρια του περιοδικού “Pussycat”(φαντάζομαι οτι πρόκειται για περιοδικό πολιτικής ανάλυσης) ,το οποίο της κληροδότησε ο μακαρίτης ο άντρας της.Αρνείται επίμονα τις προτάσεις εξαγοράς του περιοδικού της από ανταγωνιστικό έντυπο,όταν ξαφνικά ένα προς ένα τα μοντέλα της αρχίζουν να δολοφονούνται με πληθώρα τρόπων που δε στερούνται φρικιαστικής ευρηματικότητας.Ποιος κρύβεται πίσω απ’όλα αυτά?

Ωραία πράγματα…Φανταστική,ψιλο-televisual,80ies φωτογραφία,καλοφτιαγμένες σκηνές βίας,νευρώδης ρυθμός,80ies cheese n’ sleaze και μια Grandi που ανασταίνει και νεκρούς κάνουν αυτό το φίλμ must see για τους οπαδούς του Eurocult/spaghetti horror.

Και μην ξεχνάτε…ο Διάβολος δεν κάνει πίστωση…

Another excellent late Giallo/erotic thriller/sleaze by Lamberto Bava.

This spaghetti horror’s storyline revolves around a former hooker (Grandi) running a successful men’s magazine. An obsessed admirer systematically slaughters her models (occasionally increasing the magazine’s output) and supplies the mistress with pictures of their disfigured corpses taken in front of her semi-nude posters visible in the background. Is she going to be the psycho’s next victim? 

Jealousy,passion,obsession,nudity,murder,style.These are the pillars and foundation of this film and if I may say,these ingredients make Bava’s film concrete solid.

The majority of murders is quite graphic,the aura of sleaze and degradation is ever present,however oftentimes is the atmosphere  pretty cheerful in an unparalleled 80ies way,as if we had to deal with an 80ies pop video.The film pacing is quite fast and the direction is very solid.In the acting department: Grandi can’t act at all,but her presence is very…ahem…charming.The presence of spaghetti horror regulars like:George Eastman,David Brandon and the lovely Daria Nicolodi definitely add to the credibility and the overall status of the film.

In conclusion,”Le foto di Gioia” is a beautiful film,an exercise in style over substance,but a very fulfilling viewing experience,especially for fans of Euro-Horror.

Στροφή στην ποιότητα…

Ταινία παρηγορία για τον αμφιβληστροειδή το “Fifth Cord” είναι ένα από τα εμβληματικά Gialli της δεκαετίας του ’70 και παραμένει επιβλητικό και αρυτίδωτο ακόμα και στην εποχή των cgi effects.

Το παρόν αποτελεί αποτέλεσμα σχεδόν αλχημικού μετασχηματισμού όπου παντρεύονται εξαίσια:Η απίθανη σκηνοθεσία του Bazzoni,ο οποίος στήνει τα κάδρα του με γεωμετρική ακρίβεια,του Vittorio Storaro,ο οποίος καδράρει με στυλιζαρισμένα ψυχρό και ελιτίστικο τρόπο τις γραμμικές,σχεδόν φουτουριστικές συνθέσεις του Δημιουργού,του Μorricone,o οποίος παραδίδει ένα soundtrack-ηχητικό νέκταρ και φυσικά των ηθοποιών οι οποίοι με τις στιβαρές τους ερμηνείες φέρνουν το σασπένς στο σπίτι του θεατή και τον κάνουν σχεδόν συμμέτοχο στη σκοτεινή ιστορία που εξελίσσεται ενώπιόν του.

Ο Franco Nero πρωταγωνιστεί,στο ρόλο του τρωτού ανθρώπου ο οποίος αναζητά τη λύση στο μυστήριο.Σαν τον οίστρο επιμένει να κεντρίζει το άλογο,προσπαθώντας συνειδητά,αλλά και ασυνείδητα να απαλλαγεί από τις σκιώδεις εκφάνσεις του εαυτού του.Φυσικά και παίζει με μανιέρα ο Nero.O τρόπος με τον οποίο αποδίδει τον αλκοολισμό του δημοσιογράφου Andrea Bild είναι πια ξεπερασμένος,ειδικά οι νεαρότεροι θεατές μάλλον θα κανιβαλίσουν την ερμηνεία του μεγάλου Ιταλού ηθοποιού.Αλλά να τη βράσω εγώ την κουβέντα περί μανιέρας αν ο ηθοποιός για τον οποίο μιλάμε είναι ο Franco Nero (ο αυθεντικός Django παλικαράκια μου).

Στα λοιπά,η βία είναι υπαινικτική και ύπουλη ενω η ατμόσφαιρα υπνωτίζει μέσα στο δυσοίωνό της.Μια σπουδή στον τρόμο που καραδοκεί ανάμεσα στις καθαρές μητροπολιτικές δομές και στα θολά νερά της δήθεν πολιτισμένης αστικής κοινωνίας,το “Τhe Fifth Cord” στέκει αγέραστο μαζί με το αδερφάκι του “Footprints on the Moon”(του ίδιου σκηνοθέτη)και τα άλλα αριστουργήματα του είδους.

After a high-class party in Rome, there’s an assault. The victim is injured but lives. Andrea, an investigative reporter who drinks too much, is assigned the story. Then, always on Tuesdays, there are a series of murders. At each crime scene, a glove is left with a finger cut off for each victim. After four murders, Andrea thinks he’s making progress, but by this time he may himself be a suspect, and someone he loves is in danger.

Visually stunning,bleak and intimidating.”Giornata nera per l’Ariete” is another Giallo that defines and epitomizes the genre.

As a Giallo that takes place in a metropolitan environment,Bazzoni’s movie effectively poses a criticism against the fragmented structure of urban way of life and the corrupt nature of Bourgeoisie,but it’s more than meets the eye when we are dealing with movies like this one.As a typical Italian product of its era there is always an off-beat extravagant aspect to be found within the subtext of the script.This time we deal with a supernatural-like aspect.

On the technical side,the biggest selling point of the movie was/is/will be its visuals.It’s a rare occasion when the director’s clinical urban vision is executed in a stellar way by the cinematography department.Well Vittorio Storaro(his credits include “Apocalypse Now!” among others) is by no means a rookie in the Italian and worldwide cinema.His work here deserves an arsenal of superlatives to do it justice.Eugenio Alabiso’s editing is cold and precise and the majority of the cast performances are above average.

Franco Nero’s tormented portrayal of the alcoholic journalist Andrea Bild might be sort of dated,but his unparalleled passion is worthy of a honorable mention.

All in all,another masterpiece by Luigi Bazzoni that should be viewed at all costs.

Hired to Kill(1990)

Action πρωταθλητισμός από το Μαστοράκη.Εντάξει δεν παραδίδει και μαθήματα ολοκληρωτικού ποδοσφαίρου,αλλά μάλλον βγαίνει στο Ουέφα.

Κυνικός Μισθοφόρος αναλαμβάνει να σώσει γηραιό πνευματικό άνδρα,ο οποίος σαπίζει στα μπουντρούμια μεσογειακής χουντοκρατούμενης Μπανανίας υπό το κωδικό όνομα Cypra(παρντόν?).O μισθοφόρος παριστάνει το διάσημο gay μόδιστρο και πλαισιώνεται από πλειάδα όμορφων,πλήν σκληρά εκπαιδευμένων και θανάσιμων θηλυκων κομάντος,αφού αυτός είναι ο μόνος τρόπος να εισέλθει ανενόχλητος στη χώρα.

Δυνατό τεμάχιο με ερμηνεία ράπισμα από τον ογκόλιθο Brian Thompson (αυτός που λέει “You Pig!!! στο “Cobra”).Μεροκάματο βγάζουν εδώ και άλλοι τρας ογκόλιθοι όπως οι Oliver Reed (Revenger),George Kennedy (Demonwarp,Nightmare at Noon).Όπως γίνεται αντιληπτό το όμορφο νησί της Κέρκυρας όπου λαμβάνει χώρα το παρόν,ζεί στιγμές τρας μεγαλείου.

Καταδιώξεις σε καντούνια,πιστολίδια σε σπηλιές,ρομαντικά δείπνα σε γραφικές αυλές,συνωμωσίες μέσα στο Αχίλλειο,μια διαβόητη σκηνή που αποπνέει “ερωτισμό” με πρωταγωνιστές τους Reed και Thompson και άλλα πολλά καθιστούν το “Hired to kill” αρκετά ιδιαίτερο.Η κινηματογράφιση από τον Ανδρέα Μπέλλη είναι χάρμα οφθαλμών και η σκηνοθεσία του Μαστοράκη είναι σωστή όπως πάντα.Ο Έλληνας σκηνοθέτης κατορθώνει να δώσει μια εσάνς χλιδής και κοσμοπολιτισμού στην ταινία και αυτό καταγράφεται μεταξύ άλλων στα υπέρ της παραγωγής.

Συνοψίζοντας,το “Hired to Kill” καταγράφεται ως μία καλή στιγμή στη φιλμογραφία του Έλληνα B-Movie Τιτάνα,σε αντίθεση με τη μπούρδα “Ninja Academy”.

A fashion photographer and seven models travel to a South American island fortress called Cypra(ahem,ahem), ostensibly to do a fashion shoot. In reality, the photographer is a mercenary and their job is to “dethrone” a corrupt dictator called Bartos(Oliver Reed) and to liberate an imprisoned rebel leader.

A successful action film entry by Nico Mastorakis,featuring a killer cast and set in the picturesque Corfu location.

Brian Thompson(“Cobra”)does  a rock solid job as the mercenary called Frank Ryan,he is surrounded by some lethal female soldiers,supposedly his fashion models,which is a semi-original fact for the genre standards.The movie also features decent performances by Oliver Reed(plus mustache)and George Kennedy.

On the technical side.The production values seem to be superior compared to other direct to video products of that era and the overall product has a “slick” look.Credits should also be given to Andreas Bellis for his excellent bright and crisp cinematography.The Corfu location was proved to be a successful choice too.Very picturesque.

Honestly,there is nothing to complain about here.A decent actioner with lots of great moments including an infamous highlight scene featuring Reed & Thompson(I won’t give it away…)

An excellent way to kill 90 minutes…

Memorial Valley Massacre(1989)

Ακίνδυνο slasher  με ισχυρές δόσεις φαρσοκωμωδίας που πριονίζει αργά πλήν σταθερά το νευρικό σύστημα οποιουδήποτε νοήμονος όντος…Δύστυχως για το “Memorial Valley Massacre” τα στοιχεία τα οποία κομίζει δεν γκελάρουν,κατά συνέπεια το εγχείρημα χωλαίνει,κοπιάζει αλλά τερματίζει μετα βίας και καταιδρωμένο στο slasher μαραθώνιο.

Παρόλα αυτά διαθέτει κάποιες καλές στιγμές αγνής κατασκηνωτικής ανοησίας και μερικά αμυδρώς καλά σφαξίματα.Δεν είναι και εντελώς για πέταμα (σαν το “Run if you can” για παράδειγμα).Κοινή διαπίστωση ανάμεσα στους κύκλους των οπαδών είναι πως το παρόν φίλμ θα μπορούσε να είναι ακόμα καλύτερο εαν οι συντελεστές τόνιζαν τα δυνατά του σημεία λίιιγο παραπάνω.Όπερ μεθερμηνευόμενο,εάν η πέτρα του σκανδάλου-πρωτόγονος δολοφόνος ήταν πιο απειλητικός και όχι κωμικοτραγικός όπως απεικονίζεται στο φίλμ.Εάν η βία ήταν πιο ωμή,sleazy και τα τοιαύτα και όχι τόσο αδύναμη όπως ο χαμηλός προυπολογισμός του φίλμ τελικά επέβαλε.Εάν…εάν…

Τέλος πάντων,επειδή με το “άμα και το θάμα” δουλειά δεν γίνεται και επειδή με υποθέσεις δεν έκανε ποτέ κανείς σινεμά,για την ώρα το “memorial valley massacre” περιορίζεται στο επίπεδο της διασκεδαστικής,πανάγνωστης φιλμικής παραδοξότητας με την οποία θα την “παλέψουν” μόνο οι ζηλωτές του slasher…

With the Memorial Day holiday quickly approaching, a campground struggles with its polluted water, unsafe roads, old equipment, and a criminally insane hermit who comes out of isolation in order to murder every last campground visitor.

Amusing but for all the wrong reasons,”Memorial Valley Massacre” can barely entertain the die-hard slasher fans due to its overall clumsiness,campiness and inane genre semiotics.

This flick seems to try to balance between bottom barrel entries like “Don’t go in the Woods…Alone” and more accomplished affairs like “Sleepaway Camp” or “Friday the 13th”.Unfortunately the budget limitations,utterly campy performances and poor scripting make this one more reminiscent to the first of the three aforementioned films.This can of course be laughable and entertaining,but slasher films are supposed to be entertaining in a shocking manner. Nevermind,there are moments of pure bad cinema brilliance in this one.Unfortunately they are few and far between…

Additionally,the violence is quite weak,the murders are a plenty but  poorly executed and no nudity is to be found in this one…

To sum it up.This serves the purpose for hardcore fans of slasher flicks,especially if they aren’t that sober.Downing a couple of drinks always helps a great deal if  you have to sit through movies like this one.Then, one  could possibly look at this movie as a comedy of sorts and for a good reason, as  “Memorial Valley Massacre” falls into the “So Bad, It’s Good” category. 

 

Demonwarp(1988)

Τεκετζή άναψε τους Λουλάδες.Μάγκες φορέστε τα “Φέσια” σας.Ο Τεκές του latenightmoviecrypt ξαναζεί στιγμές Τρας μεγαλείου.

Ζόμπις,bigfoot,Αμερικανο-κολεγιοπαίδες και ο θεούλης George Kennedy (Savage Dawn και πολλά άλλα) παίζουν φανταστική μπαλίτσα σε αυτό το μεγαλειώδες σκουπίδι που παντρεύει τις ταινίες με Άλιεν,νεκροζώντανους και δολοφονικά θηρία με εξαίσιο τρόπο.Οι ερμηνείες είναι εξόχως κακές,η σκηνοθεσία είναι προβλέψιμη μπιμουβάδικη ωδή στη διεκπεραίωση,αλλά το σύνολο δεν διασκεδάζει απλά…αλλά συγκλονίζει…

Το φινάλε της ταινίας είναι τόσο cheesy που δεν περιγράφεται.Συνοψίζοντας,ταινίες σαν αυτή εδώ δικαιώνουν την εμμονή του γράφοντα με το μεγαλειώδη κόσμο του B-movie,αφού προσφέρουν αφειδώς διασκέδαση και μας κάνουν πιο δυνατούς…

Για σκληρούς σινεφίλ…

Sci-fi/monsters/alien space crafts,ancient entities,living dead  and overall madness rule our world for 90 minutes in this trashtastic piece of celluloid.

The film begins with Kennedy’s character talking to his daughter inside their cabin. Suddenly a Bigfoot-like animal breaks in and takes away the girl. Some teenage campers arrive and they too eventually meet the Bigfoot, with many of them being killed or captured. It is later discovered that one of the campers came there to find his uncle. His uncle is later found to be the Bigfoot, and that a bigoted Catholic priest used him for his own evil plans. Actually, the priest thinks an alien who arrived from an unknown planet 100 years ago is an angel who is here to be served by him. After unearthing such alien conspiracy and a horde of mindless zombies, the hidden spacecraft is destroyed inside the cave they used to hide it

This flick is a wild ride for each and every devoted trash cinema fan.Silly dialogue,crappy performances,some nudity,nice killings and an apocalyptic finale,blend in a very entertaining way and provide the viewer with some amusing and carefree moments for 90 minutes.

Another guilty pleasure straight from the age of sleaze and cheese,the oh-so-mighty Eighties.

Ninja Academy (1988)

Θα είμαι συνοπτικός.Το “Νinja Αcademy” δεν βλέπεται.Ακροβατεί στο τεντωμένο σκοινί του απόλυτου τίποτα,αφού δεν είναι ούτε σοβαρό φίλμ πολεμικών τεχνών,ούτε σοβαρή κωμωδία,rip-off του “Police Academy”.Δεν αξίζει ούτε μισό Ευρώ που έδωσα για τη βιντεοκασέτα.Με πρωταγωνιστή το μοχθηρό “αδελφό” του Pat Morita(τον cult Gerald Okamura)και μια πλειάδα ανεγκέφαλων “ηθοποιών” που αποδίδουν κάκιστα το ανάπηρο σενάριο,το “Ninja Academy” ήταν dated ακόμα και στην εποχή του…

Η χειρότερη ταινία του Μαστοράκη μακράν…Στην πυρά…

Ninja Academy is the tale of the struggle between two ninja dojos for adults, Chiba’s (played by Okamura) located out in the woods in Topanga Canyon and Chiba’s former classmate Addleman’s (Seth Foster) Beverly Hills Ninja Academy in Beverly Hills, California.Attending this session at Chiba’s dojo are stereotypical characterizations of a mime (Robinson), a James Bond-like secret agent (David), a Gung-homilitary enthusiast (Factor), a klutz (Jack Freiberger), an immature rich college student named Josh (Egan), and two bimbos (Kathleen Stevens and Lisa Montgomery) who had selected the school because it had been rated number one by a martial arts magazine. Addleman and his students seek revenge on Chiba for stealing their number one ranking and the new students must defend the school while Josh romantically pursues his teacher, Chiba’s daughter Gail (Randall).

Comedy?”Police Academy” rip-off?No way! “Ninja Academy” blatantly fails in each and every sector.It’s a practically unwatchable nonsensical flick,filled with supposedly comical gags that were dated even upon its release date.I can’t believe that there are people that will laugh with this one.If you want some good 80ies trashy comedy,then opt for the “Nerds” series or something like “Police academy”.

Φανταστικό 70ies sleaze αριστούργημα από το μαίτρ Massimo Dalamano.

Προφανώς και έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια διασκευή του κλασσικού έργου του Όσκαρ Ουάιλντ και τι διασκευή…

Στο τσαχπίνικο και έκλυτο Λονδίνο της δεκαετίας του ’60 ο καταραμμένος επίγειος θεός Helmut Berger διάγει αχαλίνωτο και πλήρως ανήθικο βίο.Τίποτα δεν στέκεται εμπόδιο στο διάβα του.Ότι αγγίζει μαραίνεται,όπως και η ψυχή του,την οποία αντάλλαξε με αιώνια νεότητα και πλούτη.Κάποια στιγμή χτυπάει την πόρτα του ο έρωτας,αλλά μάταια.Η σχέση του με νεαρή και αθώα ηθοποιό θα λάβει τέλος με τον τραγικότερο δυνατό τρόπο και ο Dorian θα συνεχίσει να σπαταλιέται παρέα με πλούσιους jet-setters,γηραιές τεκνατζούδες κλπ.Το τίμημα θα είναι όμως πολύ ακριβό και θα έρθει σε ανύποπτο χρόνο.Ο Ντόριαν θα συναντήσει τη Νέμεσή του και ‘μεις θα μαζέψουμε όμορφα-όμορφα τα σαγόνια μας απ’το πάτωμα.

Να μιλήσουμε για σκηνοθεσία?Δεν θα το κάνουμε.Ο Dalamano είναι γνωστός μαέστρος.Να μιλήσουμε για φωτογραφία?Θα είμαστε συνοπτικοί…απλά υπέροχη.Θα μιλήσουμε όμως για ατμόσφαιρα,για την απαράμιλλη ατμόσφαιρα και αισθητική του Ευρωπαικού κινηματογράφου,ανεξαρτήτως είδους,της δεκαετίας του ’70,που απλά δεν ξαναγυρνά.Μιλάμε για το θρίαμβο των ευτυχών συγκυριών:Κινηματογράφιση,αισθητική,soundtrack,κάστ,μοντάζ,ρεπεράζ,location…άπαντα λειτουργούν στον υπερθετικό βαθμό,όπως άλλωστε και σε πολλές άλλες genre ή auteur ταινίες από εκείνη την εποχή.Ο Σινεμάς στα καλύτερά του,γεμάτος πάθος,έμπνευση και αγάπη.

Το παρόν είναι δυστυχώς τραγικά άγνωστο.Το γεγονός οτι το “Dorian Gray”  είναι μια ταινία που πραγματεύεται μια κλασσική τραγική ιστορία, δεν το καθιστά επ’ουδενί ακαδημαικό απολίθωμα και επιβάλλεται να θεαθεί από περισσότερο κόσμο.

A marvelous loose adaptation of the classic Oscar Wilde’s work. Massimo Dalamano’s picture is nothing but an epic achievement,since it manages to transcend the chronological limitations and to move the plot successfully to the 60ies swinging London while maintaining the traditional and beloved Italian sleaze factor.

In contemporary London, a beautiful and rich young man, Dorian Gray, loves Sybil, an aspiring actress; thanks to her, he’s momentarily less self-centered. He’s also sitting for a portrait painted by his friend, Basil. When it’s done, Dorian complains he’ll grow old while it stays unchanged. On the same night, he slaps Sybil and sends her away, then accepts the seductive offer of a party’s hostess to sleep with her. The next day, the painting looks slightly older. In horror and fascination, Dorian hides it away and continues a life of degradation. Over time, as the portrait becomes hideous, he’s unchanged by libidinal life; finally, he and Basil face the painting.

For starters,Helmut Berger righteously shines as the hedonistic,lounge version of Dorian Gray.Admittedly, him being cast for that particular role couldn’t be more appropriate.Herbert Lom is also absolutely great in the role of the corrupt and cynical jet setter Henry Wotton.The rest of the cast  are precise in their respective parts too. Dalamano’s direction is superb.It is really shockingly eye-opening to realize how creative directors were in the 70ies. Dalamano keeps on emphasizing or implying things by constantly moving his camera in a vast variety of ways,he makes use of practically everything:Odd angles,shades,reflections,you name it.Otello Spila‘s cinematography is nothing less than stellar and last but not least Peppino De Luca & Carlos Pes‘ score is a delight or better put,an eargasm,dreamy 70ies lounge of the highest caliber.

…and let’s not forget that we deal with an Italian production.The vulgarity & the sleaze are delivered in spades.Some nudity is present,a lesbian scene is also added for the good measure,but it’s the corrupt and decadent aura that make this movie a hidden euro-cult gem.

To sum it up,this one is painfully underrated.I feel blessed for having had the chance to watch it.Do yourselves a favor and watch it too.

No Safe Haven(1987)

Ο συμπαθέστατος ηθοποιός μια ορχήστρα μόνος του Wings Hauser,τα σπάει σε βαθμό κακουργήματος για άλλη μια φορά και το latenightmoviecrypt πανυγυρίζει και μπιζάρει εμφατικά δηλώνωντας πως “Ναι,έτσι φτιάχνεται η χαλαρή περιπέτεια”.

Ο Μπάντυ Χάρρις είναι ένας ταλαντούχος παίκτης του Φούτμπωλ με λαμπρό μέλλον.Όταν όμως αρνείται να υποχωρήσει στις πιέσεις του Βολιβιανού Καρτέλ ναρκωτικών,τα τσιράκια του βαρόνου της πρέζας Κάρλος Χίντλ σφαγιάζουν αυτόν και σχεδόν ολόκληρη την οικογένειά του.Ο μόνος που επιζεί είναι ο μεγάλος γιός Κλήτ,μυστικός πράκτορας της CIA και βετεράνος του Βιετνάμ.Ο Κλήτ θα ξεκινήσει έναν αγώνα μέχρις εσχάτων με στόχο την εκδίκηση.Η τελική αναμέτρηση με τον Χίντλ,στο φαινομενικά ασφαλές καταφύγιο του βαρόνου,θα φέρει την κάθαρση…

Χαλαρός συνδιασμός revenge/action και buddy movie που λειτουργεί καλά χωρίς πολλές καινοτομίες,το “No safe Haven” είναι μια ταινία όχημα για τον,ομολογουμένως,χαρισματικό Wings Hauser (Nightmare at Noon,The Wind,Reason to die),ο οποίος στο παρόν τα έχει όλα και συμφέρει:Κομάντο,γόης,εξυπνούλης,εραστάρα,τσάκαλος,δίκαιος…και γαμώ τα παιδιά γενικώς.Επάξια βγάζει το μεροκάματο και ο συμπρωταγωνιστής Robert Tessier,στο ρόλο ενός καλοκάγαθου,πλήν trigger-happy βλάχου που φέρει το κωδικό όνομα Ποπάυ και εμφανισιακά φέρνει στο Rob Halford.Η συμμορία του Χίντλ(Robert Ahola)διαθέτει στο ρόλο του πρωτοπαλίκαρου Manuel την Ινδιάνικη μορφάρα Branscombe Richmond,ο οποίος με την ευγενική χορηγία του overacting μας προσφέρει κάποιες αξιομνημόνευτες σκηνές σκατοψυχίας.Γενικά,η ταινία λέει πολύ περισσότερο συγκριτικά με άλλες θεωρητικά πιο φιλόδοξες παραγωγές του είδους,αφού και καλούς καρατερίστες έχει και ωραία stunts έχει και σχετικά γρήγορη ροή.Φυσικά και είναι b-movie,για του λόγου το αληθές,ο τρόπος με τον οποίον ο Κλητ ξεπερνάει το πένθος του είναι μπιμουβάδικος μέχρι το κόκκαλο(πίνει μια μπουκάλα ουίσκι και τη “βρίσκει” με μια προικισμένη ξανθιά),ενώ το φινάλε είναι η κλασική ψιλομπόυρδα με εξυπνακίστικα one-liners από τους πρωταγωνιστάς ενώ επιστρέφουν στη χώρα της Ελευθερίας,συνοδεία θριαμβευτικής μουσικής επένδυσης…

Αλλά αυτά δεν μας έχουν κάνει πρεζάκηδες με το σπορ?

Wings Hauser is a Jack of all trades in this entertaining revenge/action/buddy movie blend.Needless to say,the man delivers the goods in spades…

When his family is murdered by members of a drug gang, an undercover CIA agent tracks them down, but they escape and flee to their hideout, a fortress in South America. Knowing he can’t count on the local authorities for aid, he calls on one of his fellow CIA agents for help in cracking the fortress, and getting to the gangsters and eliminating them and their leader.

There is nothing original or profound about “No safe Haven”.This is a movie about Wings Hauser kicking some butt and when it comes to Hauser as an action hero,you know that this guy means business. Hauser’s  Clete is much more than a bad-ass mutha.He’s a charmer,he has got a fine sense of humor , he is a humanitarian and a pacifist deep at heart…but he is more than willing to fight for justice.As a Latin emperor once stated “Si vis Pacem para Bellum”-if you want peace,prepare for war. Clete seems to be fully content that maintaining peace can be an extremely strenuous task.Kidding aside,you get the usual B-movie goodies here:Rapid pacing,guns blazing,things exploding, and nudity galore.At certain occasions,humorous gags,like a flock of geese receiving orders from a kid in camo-pants offer a sort of comical relief and although I tend to be very skeptical  about such moments,the ones in “No safe Haven” didn’t spoil it for me.

All in all,this is a very relaxed affair.Fans of 80ies action will find a nice way spending 90 minutes.

Neon City(1991)

Επιστροφή στην ημερησία διάταξη με ένα Hit n’ miss μεταχρονολογημένο post-apocalypse.

Το “Neon City” είναι καλογυρισμένο,γεμάτο αντιήρωες,παρίες της Νέας Τάξης Πραγμάτων,αλλά στην προσπάθεια του να δείξει ατμοσφαιρικό και δυσοίωνο,καταφεύγει στην επανάληψη και αναπόφευκτα κουράζει.

Η σκηνοθεσία του Monte Markham και οι αξιοπρεπέστατες ερμηνείες των ηθοποιών έχουν όλη την καλή προαίρεση να ανυψώσουν το φίλμ πάνω από το επίπεδο του τυπικού B-movie,αλλά ποιόν πάνε να ξεγελάσουν…Όπως ένα ετοιμόρροπο κτίριο δεν σώζεται με τσιμεντοενέσεις έτσι και το “Neon City” δεν μπορεί να ξεφύγει από το πεπρωμένο του,αυτό του φτηνού υποκατάστατου γνωστότερων ταινιών.(“Mad Max”,”Escape from New York”)Τι κι αν ο μπλαζε Michael Ironside βάζει τα δυνατά του,το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένα:Συμπαθής μετριότητα…

Πληθωρικοί όντες,οι οπαδοί του sci-fi/post-apocalypse σαν το γράφοντα,έχουν αποδείξει πως δεν χαμπαριάζουν από τέτοια.Έχουμε δει και χειρότερα,είδαμε και αυτό…

In the year 2053, the earth has been devastated by a military experiment gone awry. The ozone layer is gone, radioactive and unpredictable, intense bursts of ultra-violet sunlight (called “brights”) incinerate anyone caught outside. In these conditions, a group of travelers are trying to get from the frontier town of Jericho to the paradise safe haven of Neon City: A doctor named Tom, an old man with a mysterious past, a prostitute, a spoiled rich girl, an untalented comedian, and a bounty hunter named Stark with his valuable prisoner Reno. They board an armored truck converted into a passenger transport driven by an ex-convict named Bulk. Along they way, the travelers deal with passing though radioactive Xander clouds, 150F degrees of “brights”, unstable paved roads, and nomadic motorcycle riders who kill anyone venturing though their territory. During the journey, few, if any, of the passengers turn out to be what they initially appear.

Uneven but well-filmed.”Neon City” is a difficult case.The quality of the cinematography and the performances seem to push the envelope,but the script suffers from several B-movie styled flaws(repetition,slow pace,run-of-the mill antiheroes),hence the film becomes a rather tedious affair,since it doesn’t go straight for the jugular,but it tries to tell a story instead.However,the narrative is disjointed and the film balances on a tightrope.Fortunately it doesn’t jump to its doom.

Nevertheless,this confusion gets boring after a point…and it leads the viewer to assume that the film could definitely benefit from being a  little bit shorter and more polished around the edges.

But we can always lean back and enjoy the cool cinematography,the slick set-pieces,the adequate direction and the good performances.

Post-apocalypse completists should try to track down a copy of “Neon City”…

Bad Lieutenant(1992)

Μια ταινία γροθιά,ένα φίλμ σπουδή πάνω στην ανθρώπινη αλλοτρίωση και στην ανάγκη του ανθρώπου να απαλλαγεί μερικές φορές από τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό και να αδράξει οτι έχει απομείνει από τη ζωή του αναβαπτισμένος,καθαρός και ξάστερος…

Αυτή εδώ είναι επίσης μία από αυτές τις ταινίες που στηρίζονται τόσο άμεσα και καθολικά πάνω στους ώμους του πρωταγωνιστή τους(εδω Harvey Keitel)που επισκιάζονται όλες οι υπόλοιπες παράμετροι.Το να πούμε οτι ο Keitel στο παρόν έπαιξε τις κάλτσες του,παρέδωσε ερμηνεία για σεμινάριο,έβαλε τα γυαλιά σε όλους τους ηθοποιίσκους,είναι αδικία για τη δουλειά του υπέροχου αυτού ηθοποιού.Όπως ο Marlon Brando είναι ο Kurtz στο “Αποκάλυψη τώρα”,όπως ο Robert De Niro είναι ο Travis Bickle στον “Ταξιτζή”,έτσι και στο παρόν ο Keitel ΕΙΝΑΙ o διεφθαρμένος μπάτσος,ζεί και αναπνέει μέσα από το ρόλο,πίνει ξίδια,σνιφάρει κόκες,καπνίζει κρακ,σουτάρει ηρωίνη και βρίσκει τη συγχώρεση με αφορμή έναν ειδεχθή βιασμό.Ο διεφθαρμένος μπάτσος δεν είναι το αρχετυπικό λαμώγιο,ο κλασικός λακές του συστήματος καταστολής.Είναι μάλλον συμπαθής,αιχμάλωτος των παθών του,ένα ερείπιο,εθισμένος στα ναρκωτικά και το τζόγο,αλλά φέρει έναν ιδιότυπο κώδικα ηθικής,ο οποίος ξυπνάει από τη χειμερία του νάρκη όταν έρχεται η στιγμή του μη περαιτέρω…

Το άν θα πρέπει να στηλιτεύσουμε τις επιφανειακές θρησκευτικές ανησυχίες του Ferrara είναι μάλλον ένα ερώτημα ήσσονος σημασίας.Ας μην κοιτάμε το δέντρο και ας αγναντέψουμε το δάσος.Ο κάθε άνθρωπος προσκυνά στο δικό του ναό και βασίζεται σε έναν συγκεκριμένο μπούσουλα ,προκειμένου να βρεί τη λύτρωσή του…

Στο τέλος αυτό που μετράει είναι η αποκατάσταση της ισορροπίας,η οποία όμως δεν συνεπάγεται πάντα και happy end,τουλάχιστον στο παρόν το τέλος δεν είναι χαρούμενο,αλλά είναι απόλυτα δικαιολογημένο…

Τέλος…το “Bad Lieutenant” του Abel Ferrara είναι μια ακόμα εμβληματική ταινία γυρισμένη στο “Μεγάλο Μήλο”.Δείτε την με κάθε τρόπο.

A police Lieutenant goes about his daily tasks of investigating homicides, but is more interested in pursuing his vices. He has accumulated a massive debt betting on baseball, and he keeps doubling to try to recover. His bookies are beginning to get agitated. The Lieutenant does copious amounts of drugs, cavorts with prostitutes, and uses his status to take advantage of teenage girls. While investigating a nun’s rape, he begins to reflect on his lifestyle.

A cinematic fist in the face of the viewer,”Bad Lieutenant” is one of those rare movies that you experience rather than just watching and it stays with you,like a long-standing buddy,refusing to leave your grey matter.

More a study of human corruption and then redemption “Bad Lieutenant” is characterized by an iconic performance in the titular role,courtesy of Harvey Keitel and a great storyline/script, courtesy of Zoe Tamerlis(Ms.45) and Abel Ferrara. Keitel IS the Bad Lieutenant personified,his life is a spiral staircase of gambling vice,drug & alcohol addiction,a real mess. Keitel’s performance in nothing less than compelling.Method acting of the highest caliber.All aspects of the role are being explored as the titular character initially is a really unscrupulous character,only to become a fragile being,begging for forgiveness,trying to find a god that will listen to his pleas.

The New York location is always awesome,Ferrara’s direction is nothing less than magnificent,in a rather subtle way and the climax of the film,although nihilistic,makes total sense and somehow restores the cinematic equilibrium.

A timeless masterpiece,Ferrara’s movie is much more than just a crime/drama film and should be watched at all costs.
