No holds barred ,unhinged, guerilla film making by the inimitable exploitation/horror auteur Jim Van Bebber , whose career was plagued by trials and tribulations and whose hands-in approach to movie making has earned my respect. Van Bebber has written, directed , photographed and acted on most of his material during the years and his passion is undeniable. We are talking about a troubled, opinionated but highly artistic genius not unlike directors like Abel Ferrara, at least in my book, even newer films like “Mandy” by Panos Cosmatos have utilized some of Van Bebber’s tricks.

‘Roadkill – The Last Days of John Martin’ focuses on a deeply disturbed cannibal who likes to pick up and kill stranded couples on the road, chop them up and have them for dinner. His housekeeping also leaves something to be desired (human remains everywhere!). ‘My Sweet Satan’ is based on a true story wherein a group of heavy metal fans in Ohio dabble in hallucinogenic drugs and Satanism which culminates in a brutal murder.

Roadkill is very interesting visually , as it was done in 16mm and has a coarse , grindhouse look. It’s pretty much Combat shock meets Texas Chainsaw massacre . The performance by Mark Gillespie is also very convincing.

My Sweet Satan pushes the envelope in another way , visually is less of an eye candy as it was shot on video, but the depravation and gore are aplenty. Jim Van Bebber himself delivers a really frenetic performance.

Both shorts are mandatory for fans of this crazy prodigy and be sure to check out his feature films “Deadbeat at Dawn” and “Charlies Family” . I really wish Van Bebber could work with decent budget like Rob Zombie, however his underground cinema is very appealing and should be talked about and cherished more.

A weird but cool in a goofy way. meld of supernatural horror with straight meat n’ potatatoes Philippino action featuring some cool cast, Demonstone is hardly reinventing the wheel but  is a cool curio that will offer you  some mild fun.

Two U.S. Marine investigators looking into a series of grisly murders in Manila discover that the crimes are tied to an amulet with a 400-year-old curse on it that has unleashed supernatural forces. All the murder victims are tied to the Belfardo clan and the clan leader who also happens to be a senator is pushing the military officials for some answers.

Demoniac possession meets pentagon chess moves and US marine antics ,in a movie that is mostly a horror affair . albeit haphazardly executed. It’s fun watching a rather tipsy  Jan-Michael Vincent   exchanging cheesy 80ies one-liners with R. Lee Ermey but there’s hardly anything else to make someone hunt this one down.

It’s cool if you like 80ies Genre cinema and all its derivatives, but expect no masterpiece.

Σινεμάς του συρμού με την καλή έννοια. Τούτο εδώ κουβαλάει πάνω του όλα σχεδόν τα σουσούμια του κινηματογράφου είδους της δεκαετίας του 80 και κάνει την έκπληξη πετώντας στη μούρη του θεατή κάμποσο υπερφυσικό τρόμο τύπου Carrie.

Απότακτος αξιωματικός των πεζοναυτών γίνεται μάρτυρας μυστήριου φονικού με πρωταγωνιστή Αμερικάνο πεζοναύτη και αποφασίζει να συνεργαστεί με συνταγματάρχη προκειμένου να λύσει το μυστήριο. Το έγκλημα δείχνει να συνδέεται με άλλα αντίστοιχα και όλα μαζί δείχνουν να έχουν σαν αφετηρία μια αρχαία κατάρα.

85 λεπτά διεκπεραίωσης με όσο ζουμί χρειάζεται ο θεατής προκειμένου να ολοκληρώσει τη θέαση. Το παρόν είναι λίγο περιπέτεια και λίγο ταινία τρόμου, αλλά τελικά πολύ μέτριο για να χαρακτηριστεί απαραίτητο απόκτημα.

Οι φανς του Φιλιππινέζικου action μάλλον θα ενδιαφερθούν,οι λοιποί μάλλον όχι.

Γιατί ρε Τζο μας το κανες αυτό? Αφού ακόμα και με  προυπολογισμό μια σοκοφρέτα έχεις μάθει να μεγαλουργείς…ήταν ανάγκη να βάλεις την υπογραφή σου στο χειρότερο Sharxploitation όλων των εποχών?

Το “κυνήγι του κόκκινου αίματος” σε ελληνική βιντεοκασέτα από τη Ζodiac video αποτελούσε φετίχ και ιερό δισκοπότηρο για το γράφοντα εδώ και τουλάχιστον δέκα χρόνια,ο σχεδόν εφηβικός ενθουσιασμός μου ,όταν επιτέλους βρέθηκε κόπια της ταινίας στο προαναφερθέν φορμάτ ξεθύμανε παρ’όλα αυτά γρήγορα,όταν βρέθηκα αντιμέτωπος με τα πρώτα καρέ της ταινίας.

Ναι.τότε όλα επέστρεψαν στο μυαλό μου,θύμησες από μια εποχή μακρινή, ανακάλεσα τη σφαλιάρα που είχα φάει όταν φίλος μου είχε δείξει πως το μόνο που συμβαίνει στα πρώτα λεπτά του φιλμ είναι μια παρέα δωδεκάχρονων που ψήνει λουκάνικα σε μια παραλία που μοιάζει να έχει βγει από την εξωτική Λούτσα.

Τα πολλά λόγια είναι φτώχεια,η ταινία είναι για σφαλιάρες,κοπιάρει το the last Shark με ακόμα πιο ξεδιάντροπο τρόπο και από το cruel Jaws και δεν έχει καν την πλάκα του δεύτερου.H πληθώρα stock footage από άλλες ταινίες δεν μπορεί να σώσει την κατασταση και οι μελοδραματισμοί της ιστορίας μας στέλνουν για ύπνο μια ώρα νωρίτερα . Πέρα από τα κλισέ και την απουσία αυθεντικά διασκεδαστικών σκηνών ,έχουμε να τα βγάλουμε πέρα και με το άθλίο soundtrack του Carlo maria Cordio το οποίο είναι παντελώς εκτός κλίματος.

Οπτικά η ταινία είναι τυπικό υποπροιόν της Filmirage και δείχνει χάλια.Μουντή και επίπεδη φωτογραφία, ανέμπνευστες συνθέσεις και γενικά σινεμάς της μιζέριας , οι δε ερμηνείες του πανάγνωστου καστ είναι εκτός τόπου και χρόνου.

άν θέλετε να δείτε μια ταινία με θέμα τους καρχαρίες , που παρ’όλα αυτά δεν έχει καν το “δικό” της καρχαρία παρά δανείζεται σκηνές από άλλα φιλμ ,ενώ μοιάζει να έχει γυριστεί στον Αστακό Αιτωλοακαρνανίας, τότε κοπιάστε…

εμένα η ταινία πάντως με γονάτισε…

Four boys, Miki, John, Jason and Alan, make a pact of blood to seal their bond of friendship. Ten years later, the boys reunite as young men and decide to go on a holiday together. But a killer shark ruins their plans. It attacks the beach community and kills John while he’s swimming. The three remaining friends decide to avenge John’s death and hunt the beast. Their task won’t be easy, since a legend says that the beast is an incarnation of an ancient hoodoo spirit that has taken the form of a killer shark. The boys set an underwater trap for the shark, and try to lure it into an area in which they have planted powerful explosives.

Poverty row sharxploitation without Sharks by D’Amato and Donato, “Deep Blood” is a waste of film where nothing happens,plus the coming of age and supernatural storyline elements are implausible or melodramatic and cannot convince even the most hardcore exploitation buff.

Deep Blood is the bottom of the barrel , a product of an obviously decadent era of Italian genre film making that should not be viewed by none other than the archivists of Euro trash cinema.

Jacob’s Ladder

One of the best films I’ve ever seen,Jacob’s Ladder is probably a crowning pinnacle of film making for Both Andrian Lyne and the magnificent Tim Robbins.

Mourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to discover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusion, and perception of death.

One of the first films to introduce the “rubber reality”,the sort of narrative where there’s more to what we actually see or witness in a film.In such cases what is deemed as real may actually be deceptive.”Jacob’s Ladder” bombards the viewer with images of sheer power. Few films have dared to dive so deep to the realms of post war trauma,loss,struggle,sanity/insanity and finally to the realisation that one should come to terms with his/her condition and try to make the best out of it.

Everything in Jacob’s ladder is spot on.From the war scenes,to the hallucinations and the nightmares,to the final climax.Each and every coup de theatre works and the story unwinds in a captivating way.

Words cannot do justice to Tim Robbins’ performance. His Jacob Singer,the war torn Vietnam veteran is believable and heartbreaking. The same can also be said about the rest of the cast which delivers first class performances.Adrian Lyne’s direction is masterful as well. The sense of suspense,mystery,tragedy and horror in this film is absolutely fascinating and the horrors that Jacob Singer has to cope with are almost real…

I cannot praise “Jacob’s Ladder” enough. A movie that took me to hell and back,moved me, nailed me to my seat and left its aura with me for weeks is worthy of an arsenal of superlatives to do it justice.

A cinematic masterpiece…

Το πιο τρομακτικό πράγμα για τον Τζέικομπ είναι πως ο εφιάλτης του είναι αληθινός.
Ο Τζέηκομπ Σίγκερ είναι ταχυδρομικός υπάλληλος. Έχει χωρίσει από τη γυναίκα του και συζεί με τη συνάδελφό του Τζέζι. Η ψυχική του κατάσταση δεν είναι καλή από τότε που γύρισε από το Βιετνάμ και όσο πάει και χειροτερεύει. Βλέπει οράματα, δαίμονες να τον κυνηγούν, το θάνατό του να πλησιάζει. Αρχίζει να πιστεύει ότι αιτία του κακού είναι κάτι που συνέβη στο Βιετνάμ, πράγμα που επιβεβαιώνεται από το γεγονός ότι οι έξι συνάδελφοί του που επέζησαν από τη μονάδα του έχουν τα ίδια συμπτώματα. Και ξαφνικά ένας από τους έξι βρίσκεται νεκρός… και μετά άλλος ένας…

Αριστούργημα μεγατόνων από το δημιουργικό δίδυμο των Άντριαν Λυν (σκηνοθεσία) και Τιμ Ρόμπινς (πρωταγωνιστικός ρόλος) με το λοιπό καστ να πλαισιώνει αρτιότατα, το “ξύπνημα στον εφιάλτη” ίσως παραείναι καλή ταινία για τούτο το μπλόγκ, αλλά δεν πειράζει… ας πάθουμε και λίγο “ποιότητα”.

Ως γνωστόν η ταινία πραγματεύεται το θέμα των ορίων.Όρια μεταξύ ζωής και θανάτου,ονείρου και εφιάλτη,λογικής και τρέλας,πραγματικότητας και θεωριών συνομωσίας, παραδείσου και κόλασης. Η “σκάλα” του σχεδόν “βιβλικού ήρωα”Τζέηκομπ Σίγκερ λειτουργεί σαν σύνδεσμος ανάμεσα στα αντίρροπα στοιχεία, ανάμεσα σε καταστάσεις ξένες και εχθρικές .Ο ήρωας του Ρόμπινς βρίσκεται χαμένος σε μια μεταιχμιακή κατάσταση και κινείται σε φρενήρεις ρυθμούς σε όλη την έκταση αυτής της κλίμακας. Είναι ένας ήρωας Σισύφειας λογικής ,πλήρως υποταγμένος στη μοίρα του πλην αρνούμενος να εγκαταλείψει την προσπάθεια.

Αυτή η απεγνωσμένη προσπάθεια θα τον οδηγήσει στα βάθη της κόλασης,αλλά στο τέλος έχοντας δώσει τη μητέρα των μαχών θα βρεθεί στο σημείο που του πρέπει.Όλη αυτή η διαδοχή καθώς και οι αναβάσεις/καταβάσεις του ήρωα μας προσφέρουν στιγμές σπάνιας κινηματογραφικής ομορφιάς.Η ταινία συγκλονίζει από το πρώτο έως το τελευταίο της λεπτό.Ένα σεναριακό/σκηνοθετικό/υποκριτικό κομψοτέχνημα και αξίζει να ιδωθεί με κάθε κόστος.

Buried Alive

Trashy and cheap slasher with some Gothic overtones that is flawed but remains watchable due to its inane approach as well as some decent gore .

A young woman goes to teach at the Ravenscroft Institute, a spooky old girls’ school overrun by ants and staffed by various ex-mental patients. Spurred on by a series of horrific hallucinations, she begins to investigate the mysterious disappearances of several students.

This is unpretentious bad cinema ,exploitative to its very core . With a cast ranging from former pornstars or playmates to some B-movie regulars like Pleasence and Vaughn , “Buried Alive” is not the worst movie you could stumble upon but is hardly a mandatory viewing . Kikoine relies on some decent ,semi-atmospheric camerawork and tries his best to make this an effective production but the, not necessarily bad,  silliness of the proceedings and the inane performances by the majority of the cast limit “Buried Alive” to being a movie strictly addressed to the  exploitation completist.

Αυτό εδώ έχει τόση σχέση με Edgar Allan Poe όσο το “The Κόπανοι” με αρχαία Ελληνική τραγωδία. Παρά το φάουλ που διέπραξαν οι παραγωγοί βάζοντας τον Πόε και αυτό το σκουπίδι στην ίδια πρόταση ,πρόκειται για ένα λειτουργικό σκουπιδοσλάσερ με γοτθικές αναφορές το οποίο βλέπεται ευχάριστα και περιέχει κάποιες ενδιαφέρουσες αισθητικά σκηνές φόνων.

Ο κατά βάσιν σκηνοθέτης Ερωτικών ταινιών Gérard Kikoïne κάνει συμπαθητική δουλειά στήνοντας μερικές ατμοσφαιρικές Σεκανς στα υπόγεια του Ravenscroft και το καστ καταφεύγει σε όχι ιδιαίτερα πειστικές ερμηνείες ,εκτοξεύοντας τη θερμοκρασία του Τρασόμετρου στα ύψη και σκορπίζοντας αφειδώς το γέλωτα.

Αν σας εμπνέει το φτηνιάρικο σινεμά τρόμου χωρίς ιδιαίτερες καλλιτεχνικές προφάσεις,βλέπε De Coteau , τότε κοπιάστε…

Le porte del silenzio

Door into silence (1991)

Successful businessman Melvin Dovereux is caught in a traffic jam caused by a funeral procession. Soon he is haunted by visions of a hearse chasing him and a woman in a sports car. Could the funeral procession actuly be for him?

Quite of an oddball in Fulci’s filmography “Door into silence” was sadly meant to be the great,late maestro’s last movie.Shot on location in Louisianna the particular film shows potential but lacks substance and in the end doesn’t really justify its 90 minute duration.

Don’t get me wrong,the premise is very interesting ,John Savage as Melvin Devereux is very adequate and Sandi Schultz is blessed with a captivating,predatory aura but the recurring theme of seeing one’s own funeral or roughly put,trying to escape dying could at least be given more substance.Some moments tend to drag ,while some other moments radiate with suspense,style and gusto in the great Fulci way.

The film is a Filmirage production but looks way better than your average Filmirage affair.The cinematography is great and moody and the imposing Louisianna location provides some authenticity to the proceedings .

Verdict:The film can be seen as a partly successful experiment in creating some decent cinema with a small cast,an interesting storyline on a great location.The fat could definitely be trimmed but so be it.Fulci had done way worse in the mid to late 80ies and this humble psychological drama/thriller is on par with “Voci dal profondo”

Με αυτό το ταπεινό και αγνοημένο ψυχολογικό δράμα/θρίλερ έπεσε η αυλαία για το μαίτρ του Ιταλικού τρόμου Λούτσιο Φούλτσι.

Εύπορος μεσίτης παρευρίσκεται σε κηδεία προσφιλούς του προσώπου και κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού της επιστροφής στοιχειώνεται από τα οράματα του δικού του επερχόμενου τέλους.

Λίγο road movie,περισσότερο ψυχολογικό θρίλερ,καθόλου αιματηρό,το “La porte del silenzio” παραγωγή της filmirage ούσα, μαστίζεται από τα παρελκόμενα του χαμηλού προυπολογισμού αλλά δείχνει στυλιστικά και φιλμικά ανώτερο από άλλες παραγωγές της εταιρείας.Προφανώς ο Φούλτσι πόνταρε στην ταινία θέλοντας να κομίσει κάτι διαφορετικό.Σε σημεία δείχνει να ξεπερνάει άλλες του ταινίες της τελευταίας περιόδου,πλήν προβλήματα ρυθμού ενίοτε προκύπτουν.Είναι στιγμές που τα 90 λεπτά του φίλμ φαντάζουν υπερβολικά,είναι όμως άλλες στιγμές που η επιθυμία του Ιταλού σκηνοθέτη για κάτι διαφορετικό από τα συνήθη του standards αποτυπώνεται με μαεστρία στα καρέ του φίλμ.

Προσωπικά θα τοποθετούσα την ταινία κάπου μεταξύ του “devil’s honey” και του “voices from beyond”.Ταινίες ταπεινών καταβολών που όμως βρίθουν ειλικρίνειας.Σίγουρα βαραίνει συναισθηματικά το γεγονός οτι επρόκειτο τελικά για την τελευταία ταινία του Φούλτσι,πλήν το παρόν είναι ασυζητητί τουλάχιστον αξιοπρεπές.

Ιδιαίτερη μνεία πρέπει να αποδοθεί στο πειστικότατο και ατμοσφαιρικότατο location,όπως και στη στέρεα ερμηνεία του John Savage.

Οι αληθινοί φανς του μεγάλου Ιταλού και όχι αυτοί που αρέσκονται αποκλειστικά στις πιο αιματοβαμμένες δουλειές του θα βρούν σίγουρα πράγματα που θα τους ενδιαφέρουν στο παρόν.

 

 

Split Second(1992)

Σε ένα πλημμυρισμένο και μολυσμένο του κερατά, φουτουριστικό Λονδίνο, ο σκληρός μπάτσος Harley Stone(Hauer) προσπαθεί να εντοπίσει πλάσμα αγνώστου ταυτότητος (γκουχ, “Predator”,γκουχ)το οποίο δολοφόνησε τον πρώην συνεργάτη του και απειλεί τη μνηστή του (Kim Cattrall ναι αυτή…την ιέρεια της μεταμοντέρνας γυναικείας χειραφέτησης από το Sex & the City).H υπηρεσία δεν τον γουστάρει το Stone και του φορτώνει νέρντ και υποχόνδριο νέο συνεργάτη ονόματι Ντικ Ντέρκιν (Alastair Duncan).Το ντουέτο των μπάτσων έρχεται σχεδόν πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο με το πλάσμα και οι ευρισκόμενοι σε παραλήρημα τρόμου, ήρωές μας συνειδητοποιούν  οτι χρειάζονται “μεγαλύτερα γαμημένα όπλα”(ατάκα της ταινίας χαλαρά).

Φανταστικά locations,ένας υπερκούλ ντυμένος στα δερμάτινα Rutger Hauer,ένα ωραίο τερατάκι,ξαδερφάκι δημιουργημάτων από άλλες ταινίες,καταιγιστικός ρυθμός,όμορφη φωτογραφία και ένας Tony Maylam(“The Burning” στη σκηνοθεσία που μόνο τυχαίος δεν είναι,συντελούν στη δημιουργία μιας ταινίας που ενώ δεν είναι πρωτότυπη,παρ’όλα αυτά σε διασκεδάζει με έναν ανάλαφρο μπιμουβάδικο τρόπο.

In a futuristic London, the rising sea levels mean that large areas are under feet of water. Hauer plays a cop who previously lost his partner to some strange creature. Now the creature is back and its after him.

Cool early 90ies sci-fi/post-apocalypse entry directed by Tony Maylam of “The Burning” fame and featuring the ever great Rutger Hauer and the deity of post-modern feminism Kim Cattrall (Police Academy,Sex & the City).

Maylam was fortunate enough to have his movie well budgeted,a factor which resulted in “Split Second” looking nothing short of great in an unparalleled early 90ies way.The flooded London locations are breathtaking and Hauer’s hardboiled character named Harley Stone is extremely entertaining to watch,as he looks slick in his leather apparel and his performance has a cartoonish quality(I don’t mean this as a derogatory characterization).Stone’s associate Dick Durkin(well…)played by Alastair Duncan is another character that the viewer can actually care about.He is a tad more sophisticated than Stone,hence they make a nice team together.

Of course the movie can hardly be called an original conception,the “loans” by other Alien & sci-fi entries are too apparent to ignore and the climax is way too predictable to make the average fan tremble with excitement,but it’s a very slick looking and well-paced movie,let alone it has Rutger Hauer star in it….

 

Shadowchaser(1992)

Χωνευτήρι ιδεών παρμένων από πολύ μεγαλύτερα φιλμ,όπως τα “Πολύ σκληρός για να πεθάνει” και “Εξολοθρευτής” το παρόν είναι κλασική περίπτωση τίμιου action/sci-fi υποκατάστατου,με έναν παραδόξως αρκετά αποτελεσματικό Zagarino σε πρώτο ρόλο.

Ο Martin Kove(Karate kid) είναι γκροτέσκος στο ρόλο του καλού παιδιού και άξιου redneck παλικαριού,αλλά του το συγχωρούμε ενω τεχνικά η ταινία βρίσκεται πάνω από το μέσο όρο,κυρίως λόγο της κρυστάλλινης φωτογραφίας και των καλοστημένων-κλειστοφοβικών εσωτερικών πλάνων…

Ωραίο ως κλασικό 80ies Sci-Fi/action,αλλά δυστυχώς οχι πολλά παραπάνω,το “Project Shadowchaser” θα διασκεδάσει αποκλειστικά τους φανς του είδους.

An Effective mishmash of well-made formulas which results in a partially entertaining film.

Set in the future, a group of terrorists with an android leader called Romulus storm a hospital when the President’s daughter is inside, taking her hostage. To find a way of freeing her, the police decide to consult the architect who designed the building, but he’s currently in jail for some crime, and the punishment of the future is to be frozen solid for one’s sentence. The cops accidentally thaw out the wrong guy, a football player who decides to keep the mistake a secret and help the police in exchange for his freedom. Will he be able to defeat the terrorists and rescue the hostages, despite not knowing the first thing about architecture?

Partly “Die-Hard”-Martin Kove’s character Desilva could be a suitable substitute for Bruce Willis’ character in the famous series of action films and partly “Terminator”-Frank Zagarino looks and sounds like an android from the aforementioned film,”Shadowchaser” isn’t that bad if unoriginal.

The cinematography is crisp and the mostly interior set-pieces work in a particularly effective way.Hence visually the film is a victory for Eyres & co. Zagarino is very effective in his part and Kove is also cool,even if I have a soft spot for his villainous roles.

But…the plot is quite unoriginal and tends to drag quite a bit.If the film was not so rough around the edges story wise,then it would certainly have more of an appeal…

Actions fans will have a nice time though…

Εκρηκτική δράση,ευγενική προσφορά του βραχύσωμου αλλά “τεράστιου” σε όλα τ’άλλα, πρωταθλητή πυγμάχου,Κάρλος Παλομίνο.

Η ταινία ξεκινάει ψαρωτικά και χωρίς περιττές φιοριτούρες με τον αρχιτρομοκράτη Σόγκι να διαλύει το κεφάλι ενός πράκτορα της C.I.A με ρόπαλο του μπέηζμπωλ.Επόμενη σεκάνς:Σίλβα(Σόγκι) ντυμένος χειρουργός,μαζί με τη Ρωσσίδα Κατρίνα,δεξί του χέρι και άκαρδη δολοφόνο,ρίχνουν οξύ στη μούρη δεύτερου δύσμοιρου μυστικού πράκτορα.Από τα παραπάνω αντιλαμβάνεστε οτι ο Σόγκι δεν χωρατεύει.Μοιραία η C.I.A επιστρατεύει τα μεγάλα μέσα,συγκεκριμένα τον Κάρλος Ντίαζ,τον άνθρωπο με τις γροθιές από ατσάλι.

Μου αρέσει ο Παλομίνο…είναι αυθεντική φάτσα και μαίτρ στα κλωτσομπουνίδια,εξ’άλλου ο τύπος ήταν αθλητής,βέβαια δεν διέθετε τη στόφα του Danny Trejo ας πούμε,έτσι η καριέρα του κινήθηκε σε μικρομεσαία επίπεδα.Πάντως είναι συμπαθής και στο παρόν εργάκι τα πάει μια χαρά.Στο Σίλβα τώρα…τι να πούμε για το Χένρυ Σίλβα…τον αειθαλή και αρχετυπικο,τον ατσαλάκωτο,την πεμπτουσία της μοχθηρίας,έναν από τους πιο χαρακτηριστικούς “κακούς” της έβδομης τέχνης.Στο παρόν είναι για μια ακόμη φορά άψογος μέσα στη μανιέρα του,αναμφισβήτητα ένας από τους κύριους πόλους έλξης της ταινίας.

Σε όλα τα υπόλοιπα,η ταινία ακολουθεί απαρέκκλιτα την πεπατημένη.Ξέρετε:Ρόναλντ Ρήγκαν και ξερό ψωμί…έχουμε και λέμε:Kακοί Ρώσοι,κακοί Άραβες,κακοί τρομοκράτες και για να μη μακρυγορούμε,όλοι σ’αυτήν την ταινία είναι κακοί πλήν των τίμιων,πατριωτών Αμερικανών,άντε και των Μεξικανο-αμερικανών.

Έτσι ήταν το action εκείνα τα χρόνια…απλοικό στους συλλογισμούς και στους συμβολισμούς.Μην πάθουμε και τίποτα απ’την πολλή σκέψη.Όπως και να’χει το παρόν βλέπεται νεράκι.

Humble but effective.This martial arts/action entry doesn’t bring anything new to the table,yet it’s pure,unpretentious,unadulterated entertainment the late 80ies way(regardless of the fact that it was released in the nineties).

Carlos Palomino,Henry Silva and co. deliver solid action styled mannerisms and Palomino ,since he was a boxing champion,also offers some great fistfights.The cheesy soundtrack rules the same can be said about the over-the-top ending twist.

Fans of the action genres are encouraged to sink their teeth into this one.

Action πρωταθλητισμός από το Μαστοράκη.Εντάξει δεν παραδίδει και μαθήματα ολοκληρωτικού ποδοσφαίρου,αλλά μάλλον βγαίνει στο Ουέφα.

Κυνικός Μισθοφόρος αναλαμβάνει να σώσει γηραιό πνευματικό άνδρα,ο οποίος σαπίζει στα μπουντρούμια μεσογειακής χουντοκρατούμενης Μπανανίας υπό το κωδικό όνομα Cypra(παρντόν?).O μισθοφόρος παριστάνει το διάσημο gay μόδιστρο και πλαισιώνεται από πλειάδα όμορφων,πλήν σκληρά εκπαιδευμένων και θανάσιμων θηλυκων κομάντος,αφού αυτός είναι ο μόνος τρόπος να εισέλθει ανενόχλητος στη χώρα.

Δυνατό τεμάχιο με ερμηνεία ράπισμα από τον ογκόλιθο Brian Thompson (αυτός που λέει “You Pig!!! στο “Cobra”).Μεροκάματο βγάζουν εδώ και άλλοι τρας ογκόλιθοι όπως οι Oliver Reed (Revenger),George Kennedy (Demonwarp,Nightmare at Noon).Όπως γίνεται αντιληπτό το όμορφο νησί της Κέρκυρας όπου λαμβάνει χώρα το παρόν,ζεί στιγμές τρας μεγαλείου.

Καταδιώξεις σε καντούνια,πιστολίδια σε σπηλιές,ρομαντικά δείπνα σε γραφικές αυλές,συνωμωσίες μέσα στο Αχίλλειο,μια διαβόητη σκηνή που αποπνέει “ερωτισμό” με πρωταγωνιστές τους Reed και Thompson και άλλα πολλά καθιστούν το “Hired to kill” αρκετά ιδιαίτερο.Η κινηματογράφιση από τον Ανδρέα Μπέλλη είναι χάρμα οφθαλμών και η σκηνοθεσία του Μαστοράκη είναι σωστή όπως πάντα.Ο Έλληνας σκηνοθέτης κατορθώνει να δώσει μια εσάνς χλιδής και κοσμοπολιτισμού στην ταινία και αυτό καταγράφεται μεταξύ άλλων στα υπέρ της παραγωγής.

Συνοψίζοντας,το “Hired to Kill” καταγράφεται ως μία καλή στιγμή στη φιλμογραφία του Έλληνα B-Movie Τιτάνα,σε αντίθεση με τη μπούρδα “Ninja Academy”.

A fashion photographer and seven models travel to a South American island fortress called Cypra(ahem,ahem), ostensibly to do a fashion shoot. In reality, the photographer is a mercenary and their job is to “dethrone” a corrupt dictator called Bartos(Oliver Reed) and to liberate an imprisoned rebel leader.

A successful action film entry by Nico Mastorakis,featuring a killer cast and set in the picturesque Corfu location.

Brian Thompson(“Cobra”)does  a rock solid job as the mercenary called Frank Ryan,he is surrounded by some lethal female soldiers,supposedly his fashion models,which is a semi-original fact for the genre standards.The movie also features decent performances by Oliver Reed(plus mustache)and George Kennedy.

On the technical side.The production values seem to be superior compared to other direct to video products of that era and the overall product has a “slick” look.Credits should also be given to Andreas Bellis for his excellent bright and crisp cinematography.The Corfu location was proved to be a successful choice too.Very picturesque.

Honestly,there is nothing to complain about here.A decent actioner with lots of great moments including an infamous highlight scene featuring Reed & Thompson(I won’t give it away…)

An excellent way to kill 90 minutes…
