Ευτυχώς για μένα τούτο εδώ τελικά αποδείχτηκε λιγότερο φέσι απ’όσο το θυμόμουν,ή έχω ξεφύγει τελείως όσον αφορά τη σκουπιδολαγνεία.

Το Πουέρτο Σάντο είναι μια γραφική Μπανανία της Κεντρικής/Νότιας Αμερικής.Όσο φυσικό κάλλος διαθέτει ,άλλα τόσα προβλήματα τη μαστίζουν:Φιλόδοξοι στρατιωτικοί με ροπή στην ανατροπή δημοκρατικά εκλεγμένων καθεστώτων,ξένες χώρες που ανακατεύονται στα εσωτερικά ζητήματα της χώρας,ενοχλητικοί αντάρτες,έμποροι όπλων που κάνουν μπίζνες με όλους τους προαναφερθέντες.Όλοι αυτοί οι παράγοντες κάνουν μια χώρα ρημαδιό…και ο Franco το φιλμάρει διεκπεραιωτικά…

Δεν του πήγαινε του μακαρίτη το action,όπως πήγαινε στο Mattei για παράδειγμα.Παρ’όλα αυτά ,εδω δεν τα πηγαίνει και άσχημα.Η ταινία έχει φυσιολογικό budget,για Franco.To cast είναι Πρώτης Εθνικής και ο ρυθμός που τρέχει το φίλμ είναι νορμάλ και όχι σάπιος όπως σε μερικές πιο αφαιρετικές παραγωγές του εκλιπόντος.

Πάμε στα αρνητικά τώρα:Kλισαρισμένο σενάριο,επίπεδη κινηματογράφιση και σηνοθεσία ,καθώς και πλήρης απουσία δημιουργικού πνεύματος,μαστίζουν το “Εsmeralda Bay”.

O συνήθως πειραματικός,ψυχεδελικός και φλουό αρτιστίκ Jess,εδώ δείχνει να βαριέται τη ζωή του και στήνει την ταινία με εντελώς προβλέψιμη action κινηματογραφική γλώσσα.Όπως και να’χει,παρά τις επιμέρους αδυναμιες της, η ταινία βλέπεται νεράκι και τα 90 λεπτά περνάνε ευχάριστα.

Αρκετά κοντά σε θεικά υπερσκουπίδια όπως το “Cross Mission” ή το “Commando Mengele”,αλλά κατώτερο, το παρόν παίζει στα ίδια κυβικά με το επίσης συμπαθητικό “Dark Mission” του θείου Jess.

Aν ψάχνετε το φρέσκο πνεύμα που είχαν οι Seventies δημιουργίες του μακαρίτη,ψάξτε αλλού.Αν την παλεύετε με γενικόλογο,πλήν διασκεδαστικό 80s action,τότε ρίξτε μια ματιά…

Banana republic,tourist war/action extravaganza financed by Daniel Lessoeur’s EUROCINE and directed by the the usual suspect Jess Franco.

Set in the supposedly latin country of Puerto Santo.”Esmeralda Bay” involves businessman Wilson (George Kennedy), who deals weapons with the local rebels and Robert Forster as Madero, the leader of the military police on the island. In the middle is the good-hearted banana republic-president Ramos (Fernando Rey) and the rebels, among them Ramon Estevez and Brett Halsey, all fighting for their own cause. The Americans want the military crushed and have planted their own under cover agents in the middle of this little war, and everything leads to the battle of Esmeralda Bay…

Well…this one has a decent budget for a Franco movie,but as we know the great late Spaniard used to be really hit n’ miss when given relatively big budgets.Inevitably the movie is in the same league with “Dark Mission”,just a decent 80s actioner and nothing more.Fortunately it isn’t a trainwreck like f.e “X312-Flight to Hell” .In terms of framing  & filming ,absent are the usual artistic tendencies of the director and the direction follows the structural rules and “directives” of the 80s genre cinema.The photography is rather unspectacular ,but the movie,excluding the dull opening,pretty much delivers in terms of pace.As far as the cast is concerned,it’s undoubtedly a stellar one,especially for Eurocine standards.

Franco wasn’t very fond of the action genre and it shows.He probably did this one for the paycheck .Still it is very surprising(Pardon the irony),how a so-called hack director could really make a decent film,even within the confines of a genre which didn’t give a damn about.

Franco was a pure artist,a very special one.If by any chance you feel the need to discover his more approachable and commercial period,start with “Faceless”,his magnum Opus from that era,and then you can maybe watch films like this one.But if you feel like discovering his more experimental and artistic stuff,then stick to his 70ies movies.I’m sure you’ll find a lot of gems from that era alone.

As for this one,it’s nothing but 90 carefree minutes…Give me Escapism through bad cinema or give me death…

The Beast Within (1982)

Παλιομοδίτικο,αργό.λίγο απ’όλα ταινιάκι τρόμου από τις Η.Π.Α.

Μισισιπής 1964.Ένα νεαρό ζευγάρι πέφτει θύμα μιας φρικτής περιπέτειας,με επακόλουθο το βιασμό της γυναίκας.Δεκαεπτά χρόνια αργότερα ο εφιάλτης έχει πλέον ξεθωριάσει,αλλά ο γιός του ζεύγους,καρπός εκείνου του βιασμού,αρχίζει να παρουσιάζει περίεργα ψυχοσωματικά συμπτώματα.Το “κτήνος” στο κορμί του,το ίδιο που είχε βιάσει τη μητέρα του,ξυπνά…

Λίγο slasher,λίγο creature/monster/grindhouse movie,λίγο παλιακό το θέαμα γενικά,φέρνει στη μνήμη στην καλύτερη περίπτωση ταινίες σαν το “Μartin” του Romero ή το “Death dream”,στη χειρότερη σάπιο monster movie των Fifties.

Kάποιες σκηνές,όπως η μεταμόρφωση του κτήνους είναι γυρισμένες με μεράκι και ψυχή.Άλλα η γενική εικόνα του φίλμ είναι μέτρια.Μια αρκετά γερασμένη,γκράν γκινιόλ σύνθεση,αργή ανάπτυξη και μέτριες ερμηνείες.

Δείτε το αν είστε φαν του είδους.Δεν είναι άθλιο,αλλά θα μπορούσε να είναι πολύ καλύτερο,σαν το “Ιncubus” φερ’ειπείν…

 

Slow and uneven old-school monster horror flick.”The beast within” has a few redeeming values but the final verdict hints to the fact that this one is more or less a dated affair.

Its 1968. Two newlyweds (Catherine and Eli) journey through a rainy night just outside Nioba – Heart of Dixie. When they get stuck in mud, Eli goes off to find help, leaving his lady wife in the car with their trusty dog. The dog runs out into the night, and Catherine follows. The dog is killed and Catherine is then raped by the heinous dog-murdering beast. 17 years later, Eli and Catherine return to the small town of Nioba to find out just what happened that night. Their 17 year old son, Michael, is critically ill in hospital with an “occult malignancy” and a “chemical imbalance” in his brain, and they suspect that this may not be Eli’s son, but the son of whoever (or whatever) raped Catherine 17 years ago. Eli is obviously highly suspicious and deep down, he knows this to be the case. They begin to investigate town records and asking questions but locals are none to pleased with their meddling ways and they’re obviously all hiding some dark secret. Horrible murders then occur in the town, and Michael begins to change into something really creepy.

The monster effects are pretty cool for what they are,but we get to see them around the end of the movie.Other than that the opening sequence is pretty eerie and there is also a modest amount of gore in the film.On the downside,the pace of the film is very sluggish, even compared to the average 80s standards and the mystery proceedings ,during the middle part of the film,are pretty dull.The mostly average performances by the cast don’t help either.

It’s a good obscure little flick,but nothing exceptional.It’s no wonder that it rarely gets mentioned.Fans of old-school horror could risk sliding this into their VCRs.

Καλώς ήλθατε στον κόσμο του Bruno Mattei.Έναν κόσμο copy paste από άλλες ταινίες.Έναν κόσμο με πολλές εκρήξεις σε αργή κίνηση,όπου Φιλιππινέζοι κομπάρσοι πεθαίνουν αφού πρώτα πηδήξουν, για τις ανάγκες του πλάνου,όσο ψηλότερα μπορούν.Έναν κόσμο όπου τα σενάρια γράφονται με γνώμονα το μοντάζ.Κόσμος υπέροχος,μαγικός,σε παραγωγή Franco Gaudenzi.

H ρεπόρτερ Μέριλην Κέην προσλαμβάνει τον παρακμιακό ,πλήν αμάσητο βετεράνο Σαμ Γούντ,προκειμένου να απελευθερώσει τον πατέρα της που τυγχάνει αιχμάλωτος κάπου στα βάθη της Ινδοκίνας.Όπως καταλάβατε,μετά από αυτή την αποστολή η Ινδοκίνα δεν θα είναι ποτέ ξανά η ίδια.

Εντάξει,ο Brent Huff είναι αγγούρι επικών διαστάσεων,αλλά μάλλον πίστεψε στο ρόλο του Σαμ Γούντ τόσο πολύ που τα ξεφτίλησε όλα.Οι μούτες του,τα σφιγμένα δόντια,η επαναλαμβανόμενη ατάκα “it can be done”,όλη η σημειολογία ενός trash action ήρωα εσωκλείεται και εμπεριέχεται στους μύες του Brent Huff.H Mary Stavin είναι ξινή και αχώνευτη,αλλά διεκπεραιώνει συμπαθητικά από ερμηνευτική άποψη και με καρτουνίστικες αποχρώσεις,το ρόλο της.Οι υπόλοιπες γνωστές φάτσες:Werner Pochath,Romano Puppo ,μεταξύ άλλων,δίνουν έναν οικουμενικό trash χαρακτήρα στην ταινία,που ενω δεν είναι η καλύτερη της Φιλιππινέζικης περιόδου του Mattei,δεν είναι παρόλα αυτά ούτε η χειρότερη.

Η σκηνοθεσία του μακαρίτη είναι τυπική  Mattei action σκηνοθεσία-τα’χει πάει και καλύτερα π.χ στο “Robowar”,αλλα ο Mattei είναι υπεράνω κριτικής.Ο άνθρωπος έκανε το σύστημα “ταινία κόψε-ράψε” επιστήμη.Kλασικά και εδώ χρησιμοποιεί stock footage,πως θα μπορούσε εξ’άλλου να κάνει αλλιώς.Όπως έλεγε και μια ψυχή,κανιβαλίζοντας με αγάπη το σκηνοθέτη:”Είναι κρίμα να υπάρχουν έτοιμες ,από άλλες ταινίες ,οι σκηνές που χρειάζεσαι και εσυ να τις ξαναγυρίζεις”.Αξίζει εδώ να συμειωθεί,οτι μόνο ο Godfrey Ho ανήγαγε το ίδιο στυλ κινηματογράφησης σε επιστήμη,αλλά ο Mattei το έκανε με περισσότερο στυλ.

Τα πολλά λόγια είναι φτώχεια…Δειτε την ταινία…

Bruno Mattei copy-paste action marathon that really hits the nail and offers joy and happiness to each and every Italo-Philippino trash buff…

Reporter Marilyn Kane(Mary Stavin) hires Vietnam snake venom drinking veteran,namely Sam Wood (Brent Huff) as a guide for their trip to Vietnam. Of course things are not what they seem, Kane has actually hired Wood to help her to get her father out of Vietcong prison camp. Let the mayhem begin!

Pure trashy mayhem that ravages the senses.An untalented,yet very entertaining lead(Brent Huff) that really delivers the goods and the presence of Eurotrash regulars like: Werner Pochath and Romano Puppo make this hilarious actioner a real pleasure.

Bruno Mattei’s directing job is another day at the office.He pretty much does the same thing he did in each and every of his action feature films,which means:Countless recycled explosions in slo-mo, choppy editing and flawed continuity,but the movie rules no matter what.

Inferior than “Strike commando” ,”Double target” and “Robowar” but superior than “Strike commando 2” this flick should be cherished by Italophiles with a soft spot for Franco Gaudenzi’s FLORA Films productions and fans of ultra trashy and campy Philipino war/action movies.

It can be done…

Πολύ καλογυρισμένο,φωτισμένο άψογα,με φωτογραφικές συνθέσεις που σε στιγμές φλερτάρουν με το arthouse,τούτο δω το συμπαθέστατο Αυστραλιανό sci-fi/alien invasion/horror κράμα προδίδεται απ’το σχετικά αδύναμο δεύτερό του μέρος.

Ο Ρίτσαρντ Κλήρυ και η γυναίκα του Ρέητσελ,εκμεταλλεύονται μια τεράστια φάρμα.Το ζευγάρι φιλοξενεί τον αδερφό του Ρίτσαρντ,το Έντυ,που μόλις έχει αποφυλακιστεί.Όταν αρχίζουν να συμβαίνουν περίεργα πράγματα στην περιοχή-τα ήσυχα ζώα γίνονται επιθετικά,τα αυτοκίνητα σβήνουν χωρίς προφανή λόγο,κάποιοι γείτονες εξαφανίζονται-και οι τρείς τους πανικοβάλλονται.Τα δύο αδέλφια αποφασίζουν να πάνε στο Raven’s Gate,μια μυστήρια περιοχή για τη οποία πολλά λέγονται…

Όταν αργότερα ο Έντυ αντικρίζει το τεμαχισμένο σώμα του αδελφού του,είναι πια  σίγουρος οτι η μάχη με τις δυνάμεις του κακού έχει αρχίσει…

Το πρώτο σαραντάλεπτο της ταινίας είναι καθηλωτικό.Η σκηνοθεσία του De Heer δημιουργεί αγωνιώδη ατμόσφαιρα,ενω η άψογη κινηματογράφηση και το πάντα απειλητικό και αφιλόξενο Αυστραλιανό location,συντελούν στη δημιουργία ενος εντελώς δυσοίωνου κλίματος.Όταν τα γκρανγκινιολικά και τα παραφυσικά στοιχεία υποχωρούν,δυστυχώς η ταινία μετατρέπεται σε ένα τετριμμένο θρίλερ μυστηρίου.

Στα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια.Οι χαρακτήρες είναι επαρκώς ανεπτυγμένοι σεναριακά και οι ερμηνείες του καστ εκπέμπουν μια φυσικότητα.Τα ειδικά εφφέ είναι καλά,αν και η παρουσία τους είναι μάλλον διακριτική και το soundtrack συμπληρώνει διακριτικά το πάζλ της ταινίας.

Το απαύγασμα του όλου πράγματος είναι οτι πρόκειται περί ενός όμορφου αλλά όχι εξαιρετικού(αν και υπήρχαν οι προυποθέσεις) φίλμ.Εδώ στο blog αγαπάμε Ozploitation και γουστάραμε στο φουλ.Εσείς λογικά θα ψαρώσετε με το πρώτο μέρος της ταινίας,αλλά η συνέχεια θα σας βρει να πατάτε το fast forward του Βίντεο (πάντα!!!!)…

Well crafted sci-fi/horror Hybrid that runs out of steam during its second part.This is my verdict regarding this little Ozploitation gem.

Ex-con Eddie Cleary gets a job working on his older brother’s isolated farm.Something very peculiar happens at  nearby farming property,called Raven’s gate. It’s not long before bizarre things start happening–dead birds falling out of the sky, family pets attacking their owners, crop circles,strange apparitions beginning to appear, and people who had been “normal” suddenly going insane.The police are trying to solve the mystery in a subtle manner.Is this an experiment gone horribly wrong or something that the human mind cannot grasp. 

For starters,De Heer’s budget was modest to say the least,but as a first class director he managed to make proper use of every penny,hence his movie seems way more expensive than it actually is.The violence is kept minimal ,but the photography/cinematography is a work of sheer brilliance…The ominous Australian outback is being filmed in a very suspense-driven manner and the film is beautifully lit,with reddish,blueish and blackish shades giving it an almost otherworldly quality,especially during the first,more paranormal/alien invasion influenced,part.

Unfortunately,things start to fall apart after the 50 min. mark.The viewer gradually witnesses the subject matter of the film,shifting from a very effective sci-fi/horror to a banal mystery thriller/survivor movie.The good part is that the first reel is so good that it makes up for the inconsistencies of the second .Another positive aspect is the cast’s  performances.All actors perform in a very natural,thus effective,way.

To sum this up.It’s a flawed but highly interesting and effective film.It kind of hurts,for it could have been a sci-fi horror movie of epic proportions,but so be it.Still the first part of this one is much better that lots of other flicks. Ozploitation fans need to check this one out.The rest of the trash afficionados should approach with caution… 

Hanna D. – La ragazza del Vondel Park (1984)

Η πεμπτουσία του sleaze.Πανδαισία χρωμάτων και εικόνων.Όργιο Σεξ και βίας και άλλα τέτοια καλολογικά που μόνο ο κινηματογραφικός διανομέας Γιάννης  Λεωντσίνης θα μπορούσε να γράψει σε αφίσα ταινίας του.Όλα αυτά και ακόμα περισσότερα συνυπάρχουν αρμονικά (sic) σε αυτό το εξωφρενικό rip-off της μεγαλειώδους κοινωνικής ναρκοταινίας του Uli Edel “Christianne F.-Wir Kinder aus Bahnhof Zoo”.Εκεί που το αριστούργημα του Edel εικονογράφησε με πεσιμιστικό τρόπο, σε ένα παρηκμασμένο και γκρίζο μα τόσο γοητευτικό Βερολίνο ,την απώλεια της αθωώτητας,τη φρίκη της εξάρτησης και τη γύμνια των ανθρώπινων σχέσεων.Ο αθεόφοβος Di Silvestro (Werewolf Woman)φιλμάρει σούτια,παρακμή,σπασμένες φλέβες και βρώμικο σεξ.

H Χάνα,ατίθαση έφηβη,ζει κάτω από την ίδια στέγη με τη μεσήλικη, αλκοολική  Μητέρα της,πόρνη στο επάγγελμα.Η μάνα της κορασίδας έχει σπιτώσει νταβραντισμένο νεαρό,ο οποίος ορέγεται τη Χάνα.Όταν η έφηβη τον απορρίπτει,ο ” αγαπητικός ” εγκαταλείπει το “πλοίο” και η μάνα της Χάνα πέφτει σε κατάθλιψη.Οι σχέσεις των δύο γυναικών πάνε από το κακό στο χειρότερο και η δεκαεξάχρονη νεαρή καταλήγει ,διωγμένη από την ίδια της τη μητέρα, στο δρόμο.Ζώντας κάτω από άθλιες συνθήκες πέφτει στα ναρκωτικά και στην πορνεία .Η ζωή της φαίνεται να παίρνει άλλη τροπή όταν γνωρίζει έναν clean-cut γόη,ονόματι Miguel.Aλλά τα όνειρά της βυθίζονται και πάλι στο βούρκο,όταν ανακαλύπτει πως ο άντρας στον οποίο βασίστηκε δεν είναι παρά ένας πορνοπαραγωγός.Η Χάνα διαφεύγει με τα φτερά της τσακισμένα,όλα δείχνουν να έχουν τελειώσει,αλλά στο τέλος η τύχη της χαμογελά. 

 

Μιλάμε για Sleaze με κεφαλαίο “S”.Οι φάνς του ξεδιάντροπου Ευρωπαικού σινεμά θα λατρέψουν την αιρετική διάθεση του Di Silvestro,τον τρόπο που εναλάσσει σκηνές δήθεν ρομαντικού ερωτικού πάθους με αντίστοιχες, μηδενιστικές και απόλυτα σαρκαστικής exploitation αντίληψης, σκηνές χρήσης ναρκωτικών και απόλυτης παρακμής.Ειδικά το στοιχείο της εξάρτησης κυριαρχεί και είναι αληθοφανέστατο-μπορεί κανείς σχεδόν να δει το ξεραμένο αίμα στις βελόνες,οι οποίες όντως διαπερνάνε τη σάρκα των ηθοποιών.Τα “τζάνκια” κουβαλάνε φιξάκια σε κάθε πιθανή και απίθανη σωματική τους κοιλότητα και ο Di Silvestro καταγράφει επίσης ένεση στο μάτι και κάτω απ’τη γλώσσα σε δύο σκηνές ανθολογίας.Οι ερμηνείες είναι ο παράδεισος του σκουπιδολάγνου,over acting all the way,αλλά η κινηματογράφιση είναι αρκούντως και καταλλήλως μουντή.Το γυμνό και οι σκηνές Σεξ,είναι αμφότερα δωσμένα με τρόπο ωμό,χωρίς ιδιαίτερες καλλιτεχνικές προφάσεις και γενικά η ταινία ζέχνει αγνό,ανόθευτο,άμωμο και άσπιλο exploitation spirit.

Oι οπαδοί της ταινίας του Edel θα φάνε τις σάρκες τους.Οι υπόλοιποι “Ροβεσπιέροι” του eurotrash μπορούν να στήσουν τη γκιλοτίνα τους και με το χαμόγελο στα χείλη να αρχίσουν να σαρώνουν το κοινό που αρέσκεται σε σαχλές,αισθηματικές κομεντί και ταινίες που είναι ολόκληρες στημένες στον υπολογιστή.

Η ταινία είναι ένας ύμνος στο φτηνό Ευρωπαικό genre cinema της δεκαετίας του ’80.Ένα exploitation ποίημα…Είναι επιτακτική ανάγκη να γίνει αντικείμενο προσοχής από περισσότερο κόσμο.

 Hanna , a young girl who lives with her verbally abusive  whore mother. After her mother’s boyfriend leaves because Hanna didn’t get laid with him, she angrily throws Hanna out onto the streets.The streets are harsh and  corrupt her in multiple ways. She starts out with a coke habit, which eventually leads to heroine.She pays for her fixes by becoming a prostitute, and hangs around the park looking for johns. The older prostitutes don’t particularly like this, and Hanna has to fight for her survival. Soon she meets Miguel, a local porn “agent”. After going “all the way” with Hanna (her first time), he sees her as his newest client. The initially sweet talking Miguel gradually becomes more and more menacing and sadistic.Soon enough he tries to get her into the porno business, Hanna flees and ends up in the mean streets again.In a really decrepit state she finds her soul mate along the way.In the end,both of them find their so much desired happiness.

  

An exploitation poem.A fist in the face of any prudish viewer.”Hanna D.” uses the main subject matter of Uli Edel’s masterpiece drama film,namely “Christiane F.” and follows its own path,by almost mockingly showing its red tongue to the structural rules of the drama film genre.

Di Silvestro juxtaposes romantic sex scenes ,accompanied by jolly music, with scenes of filth and utter degradation.To be more precise:Needles are injected to the most uncommon body parts you’ll ever witness and drug trafficking becomes a work of art.I challenge you my readers…Has anyone ever seen a heroin fix getting out of a woman’s rectum.I suppose not…

Hanna D. still carries a veneer of a drama film.The alcoholic prostitute mother,the broken dreams,the addiction,the violence against women.All these factors are strong dramatic containers,but the execution is so over the top and exploitative,the editing by Bruno Mattei,so choppy,the directing job so crass and the cinematography so delightfully moody and downbeat,hence all that remains is an exploitation masterpiece.A mayhem of filth.A flick that urges you to take a shower after its completion.

No matter how I profoundly love Edel’s movie,no matter how I passionately love Berlin,I also fell in love with Di Silvestro’s ode to cheap cinema.This is a mandatory viewing.

Ο Νίκ Νόλτε(Kristoff) είναι ένας αμείλικτος μπάτσος.Η τοπική μαφία διαπιστώνει μετά λύπης  οτι δεν μπορεί να τα βγάλει πέρα μαζί του,έτσι μπράβοι της διατάσσονται να βγάλουν τη Στριπτιζέζ αδερφή του Νόλτε από τη μέση.Το έγκλημα φέρνει τα αντίθετα αποτελέσματα.Ο Νίκ το παίρνει προσωπικά και τυφλωμένος από οργή κονιορτοποιεί το σύμπαν.

Αν θέλετε να δείτε μια ταινία όχημα για τις μούτες του Romano Kristoff που να φλερτάρει έντονα με την απόλυτη σαχλαμάρα,τότε τη βρήκατε.Ο Gallardo στηρίζει όλο του το οικοδόμημα στις ακατάπαυστες τουφεκιές του Romano και παραδίδει μια μπούρδα μεν,διασκεδαστική δε.

Οι μαφιόζοι με τους παχυλούς μύστακες αποτελούν άλλο ένα κλου της ταινίας και γενικά η σαχλαμάρα πάει σύννεφο.Παραδέχομαι πάντως,οτι ο ρυθμός του φίλμ είναι στρωτός και η μιάμιση ώρα περνάει νεράκι.

Ας σημειωθεί οτι το παρόν ΔΕΝ είναι σήκουελ του θεικού “Beast with a gun” στο οποίο παρέδωσε μαθήματα κινηματογραφικής σκατοψυχίας ο Helmut Berger.Oύτε η Marisa Mell,ούτε ο Richard Harrison εμφανίζονται στο υπό παρουσίαση,όπως σουρρεαλιστικά αναγράφεται στο εξώφυλλο του Ελληνικού VHS.

Πραγματικά λυπάμαι όποιον αγόρασε-είδε τούτο εδώ,προσδοκώντας να δει Ιταλικό crime/action.

Σας κοροιδέψανε αδέρφια…

Anyway,η ταινία τηρουμένων των αναλογιών την ψιλοπαλεύει…

A Hilarious Philippino  actioner.This one is nothing but a vehicle for Romano Kristoff to set the world on fire.Well Romano  pretty much succeeds in being a badass cop and Gallardo quite effectively films him tearing Manilla to pieces,but other than that this film is mostly a half assed attempt in churning out another “Dirty Harry” rip-off the oriental way.

Nick Nolte(Kristoff) is a cop that doesn’t mess around.His brutal methods have jeopardized the criminal business of the local mob.The mobsters attempt to teach him a lesson by killing his stripper sister.First mistake…last mistake!Nick turns to a loose cannonball,ready to tear the thugs to pieces.

That’s the whole deal in a couple of lines.Some scenes are impressive and Kristoff really rocks for the most part,but the movie has nothing else to offer and loses steam towards the end.Too bad,too bad.Well,there’s room for only one Peter O’Brian after all…

Another surreal fact about this cheapo is that ,despite what a few B-movie fans think. this is NOT a sequel to the Italian crime masterpiece “Mad Dog” aka “La belva col Mitra”.So,there’s no Richard Harrison or Helmut Berger to be found here.If you ever thought that this was a spaghetti crime/thriller,then you’re in for a very tasteless joke…

Fans of exotic action will have a couple of laughs though…

Season for Assassins (1975)

Season for Assassins (1975) aka “Il tempo degli assassini”

O Φτωχός συγγενής του “Savage three” είναι τούτο εδώ το ταινιάκι του Marcello Andrei (A black ribbon for Debora).Φυσικά αυτή διαπίστωση δεν γίνεται για να υποβαθμίσει την αξία του παρόντος,το οποίο μια χαρά ταινία είναι,αλλά για να υπογραμμίσει το μεγαλείο του “Savage Three”.

O Pierro(Dallesandro) και η παρέα του,είναι νέοι που φλερτάρουν έντονα με το περιθώριο και όλες του τις αποχρώσεις:Παραβατικότητα,έκλυτη ζωή και γενικότερη αποχαλίνωση.Ο επιθεωρητής Katroni(Balsam),κουρασμένος και πικρόχολος,προσπαθεί να βάλει τάξη στα ατίθασα παλιόπαιδα,ενώ ένας ιερέας προσπαθεί να προσεγγίσει τα “παρεξηγημένα” νιάτα και να τα επαναφέρει στο σωστό δρόμο.

Τετριμμένα τα πράγματα,όσον αφορά την πλοκή.Αλλά όσο επαναλήψιμο και αν είναι το σενάριο,τίποτα δεν μπορεί να ακυρώσει τη δύναμη που κρύβουν οι εικόνες του Andrei.Δύναμη ωμή και ρεαλισμός,που φέρουν κάτι από τη σπουδαία παράδοση του Ιταλικού μεταπολεμικού Σινεμά,παρότι κανείς δεν μπορεί να ισχυριστεί οτι το “Season for Assassins” είναι μια Νεορρεαλιστική ταινία.Exploitation είναι το φίλμ,ας μην γελιόμαστε,αλλά είναι exploitation συγκινησιακά φορτισμένο,με ερμηνείες άγουρες πλην τεταμένες και κινηματογράφιση μουντή και γκρίζα σαν την Ιταλία των seventies που μαστιζόταν από πληθώρα κοινωνικοπολιτικών προβλημάτων.

Ο Dallesandro μας έχει προσφέρει καλύτερες ταινίες από αυτήν εδώ,αλλά αυτό όπως είπαμε δεν σημαίνει οτι το παρόν στερείται ουσίας.Οι οπαδοί του crime/drama, με ίχνη κοινωνικού προβληματισμού, θα το λατρέψουν.

Downbeat crime/drama the Italian way.You know the deal…over the top acting meets unripe social commentary,something like a way cheaper version of the Neo-realist cinematic movement.Still, “Season for Assassins” is a good movie that should be cherished by fans of the Italian crime/noir/drama for what it really is,a brutal and unrelenting film,rough around the edges,but with a hidden strength lurking behind its raw but captivating visuals.

As a gang of youths terrorizes a city, the weary chief of police finds himself caught between the citizens who cry for blood and a catholic priest who believes the boys will respond to kindness.

The storyline is overused but the presentation is strong enough to keep the viewer nailed upon his/her seat.The over the top scenes will make the cynical viewer grin with disbelief,but the overall essence is that of a solid film. I’ve definitely watched slicker Polizi films,but I really have a soft spot for this one.Namely,the cruelty and the sensitivity co-existing in some scenes,i.m.o the suicide scene,is rarely met in a film genre that, for the most part, presents social issues, in  a way deeply cynical .I admit that I am not that objective regarding this little hidden gem.I love this film, as I love the majority of gritty and hardboiled Italian crime films.

Watch it, if you share my passion.

 

Jungle Heat (1988)

Υπερσπάνιο Ινδονησιακό “σαρκοβόρο” trash-orama που παντρεύει το cannibal action με τη “Γαλάζια Λίμνη” .Φυσικά όποια ταινία έχει στο καστ της τον θεό Peter O’Brian αξίζει να θεαθεί από τους αναγνώστες αυτού του blog.Μόνο που το συγκεκριμένο φέσι θέλει λίγη προσοχή,αφού η κοιλιά που κάνει στη μέση μπορεί να στείλει πολλούς από σας πρόωρα για ύπνο.

Παρόλα αυτά τα καλά σημεία στο παρόν φίλμ είναι αρκετά,οι κανίβαλοι είναι σκέτη απόλαυση και το gore αρκετούτσικο.Καλύτερο απ’το επίσης Ινδονησιακό “Primitif” και απ’τα cannibal actioners του αείμνηστου Jess Franco.

H κασέτα του συγκεκριμένου είναι αρκετά ζόρικo να βρεθεί,αλλά έχει bootlegαριστεί κατά κόρον από sites που πουλάνε πειρατικές βερσιόν της ταινίας.

Οι φάνς του κάλτ Ινδονησιακού κινηματογράφου και οι απανταχού τρασάκηδες θα γουστάρουν σίγουρα.

O’Brian for president…

Crappy extravaganza made in Indonesia,featuring Peter O’Brian.

Some rival gangs fight over precious stones deep into the Indonesian jungle.Cannibal tribes invade the camp of some gang members, abduct some and  send others to meet their maker.Chaos and mayhem ensue.An expedition,led by Peter O’Brian ,is to enter the vast jungle ,more mayhem ensues…

Partly funny,partly a drag, partly gory and campy fun,”Rimba Panas” is a guilty pleasure for the patient viewer.The cannibal sequences are well staged ,especially when we refer to Indonesian standards,but some unnecessary extended romance scenes, involving O’Brian,an Oriental beauty,a waterfall and a lake,are absolutely tedious.Let alone,watching O’Brian with a woman is unintentional comedy per se. The cannibals are somehow menacing looking and this is always a good thing.

All in all,a cool flick for fans of exotic and utterly trashy cinema.

 

Time Burst: The Final Alliance (1989)

Αβυσσαλέα σαχλαμάρα της ΑΙΡ…Κυριολεκτικά μου τηγάνησε τον εγκέφαλο…

Υπάρχουν κενά στο χρόνο.Υπάρχουν επίπεδα στο χρόνο που μόνο λίγοι εκλεκτοί γνωρίζουν και κατέχουν τα κλειδιά για να ταξιδεύουν.Υπάρχουν παγίδες στο χρόνο.Υπάρχει ένας μοναδικός πολεμιστής που παγιδεύτηκε στις φλόγες μιας ατελείωτης μάχης.Θέλει να ξεφύγει και μέσα από τον άπειρο χρόνο ζητά τη βοήθεια ενός αρχαίου Ιάπωνα Μάστερ.Μαζί θα πολεμήσουν,για πολλούς αιώνες το κακό.Εαν θέλουν να επιβιώσουν θα πρέπει να πολεμήσουν τον φονικό χρόνο!

Τι λες τώρα?

Η επιστημονική φαντασία συναντά την περιπέτεια με κωμικοτραγικά αποτελέσματα.Αν το είχε σκηνοθετήσει κάποιος εκ των Godfrey Ho/Philip Ko,ίσως να μιλάγαμε περί ενός trash αριστουργήματος σαν το “Robo Vampire”.Δυστυχώς όμως (δεν) το σκηνοθέτησε ο Peter Yuval,κατά συνέπεια,το παρόν έχει να επιδείξει μόνο την υπερκάλτ φάτσα του Gerald Okamura(ο Pat Morita των φτωχών).

Ο ρυθμός της ταινίας είναι βασανιστκός,το σενάριο είναι για σφαλιάρες,οι ερμηνείες για τα πανηγύρια,τα ειδικά εφφέ ανύπαρκτα και για να μην τα πολυλογούμε,οι άνθρωποι πίσω από αυτό το ανοσιούργημα πάνε να κάνουν ταινία με τα ψέματα.Άν κάποιος δει αυτή την ταινία και δεν φάει τις σάρκες του,τότε είναι ανώτερο όν και του βγάζω το καπέλο.

Παρεμπιπτόντως,μην τολμήσει και ξεγελαστεί κανείς από το tag του imdb.com και νομίσει οτι το παρόν είναι horror,γιατί θα βρεθεί προ δυσάρεστης εκπλήξεως…

Περαστικά μου…

Gloriously abysmal & craptacular. This flick is a blueprint of cinematic stupidity and despite the fact that stupid movies usually tend to be good ,this one isn’t.

Urbane (Scott David-King) lost his memory when he emerges unscathed from a crashed Cessna. However, he soon remembers enough to know that he is in search of some old tablets which hold the secret to immortality. He joins with a beautiful CIA agent (Michiko) and finds that they are in the keeping of “Master” (Gerald Okamura).A local gang led by a Japanese guy is also after the tablets and gives Urbane a hard time.Given the opposition he encounters, it’s good good thing that Urbane has 350 years behind him and is immune to being killed by bullets.

Damn,I must have just escaped a stroke or something similar.This movie punishes the viewer so hard with its utter stupidity,that it’s hard to believe you’re actually sitting through this ordeal of a flick.

Everything in “Time burst” is cheap looking,boring,sluggish and plain bad.The direction by Yuval is a joke,the performances are a joke,pretty much everything is a joke.Little did I know that the joke was on me.

It was absolutely a terrible mistake from my side,to ignore the overall commends regarding the “quality” of this “movie” and to slide this wretched tape into my VCR,now I’m afraid that my fate is sealed. I’ve probably become an immortal myself,destined to sit through unbearable pieces of crap like “Time burst:The final alliance”.

The expression “To be avoided at all costs” is definitely an understatement with this one.

Enemy Unseen (1989)

Όχι,όχι και πάλι όχι,αυτό δεν είναι καλό.Πως θα μπορούσε να είναι πραγματικά καλο,αφού το κυκλοφόρησε στην αγορά του Βίντεο η AIP(Action international pictures),εταιρεία με Ντοκτορά στην παραγωγή και εκμετάλλευση ανεγκέφαλου action.H AIP έκανε την Cannon να δείχνει σαν την Paramount.Παρόλα αυτά,αγαπάμε την εξωφρενική διάθεση των ταινιών του συγκεκριμένου studio(έχουμε ήδη παρουσιάσει στο blog το “Rapid Fire”).

To παρόν ,όπως προανέφερα,δε συγκαταλέγεται στα διαμάντια της AIP.Είναι σχεδόν τραγελαφικό,με  χαλαρό και άνευρο ρυθμό παιδικής χαράς,ξεπερασμένη κινηματογράφηση και μοντάζ (κάτι σάπια transition μου θύμισαν προπολεμικές jungle comedies με ήρωες τους Abbot και Costello) και απαράδεκτες ερμηνείες-καρικατούρες από το κάστ,το οποίο  μάλλον δεν πίστευε επ’ουδενι στο όποιο κύρος του project.

Με πολλή προσπάθεια μπορούν να καταγραφούν και μερικά θετικά στοιχεία στο παρόν σκουπίδι:Θεικο location(Νότια Αφρική),με τη ζούγκλα και τα ποτάμια να φέρνουν μια μυρωδιά “Cannibal Holocaust” στο μυαλό του θεατή,οι ζωντανοί κροκόδειλοι,που με την παρουσία τους κάνουν οποιαδήποτε ταινία να φαίνεται πιο απειλητική και οι “Θεοί” Ιθαγενείς,που φέρνουν στη ταινία αυθεντικό Αφρικανικό φολκλόρ.

Συνοψίζοντας,πρόκειται για ένα απελπιστικά μέτριο θέαμα,που βλέπεται μόνο με χαλαρή διάθεση.Άν θεατή μου,θες να δεις ταινία για να τσιτώσεις,τότε ψάξε αλλού,διότι τούτο εδώ σε σημεία είναι τραγικά επίπεδο και μοιραία θα φας τις σάρκες σου…

Για τους φανατικούς του jungle/action μόνο…

Campy and leisurely paced jungle adventure.Unfortunately these terms that tend to work in other movies,seem  to keep this one below the radar.”Enemy Unseen” is hardly a mandatory viewing.The storyline is abundant with  genre cliches .The cast has no idea what it’s doing and Elmo De Witt’s direction is an ode to boredom and pedestrian directing approach.The editing is also very clumsy,during some scene transitions in particular.

The plot:

A couple of young scientists, Mel Noble and Roxanne Tangent, travel to an island in Africa thought to be deserted in search of crocodile life, when African Natives storm the camp and kidnap Roxanne. Her father, Gordon hires Steiger and his team of investigators to track down the natives that worship crocodiles as sacred animals. The problem is: they can’t be seen. With natives in the jungles and crocodiles in the waters, Steiger and his crew must fight to survive and save Roxanne from being sacrificed in a gruesome ritual .

However,the movie is not a complete trainwreck. The South African setting is very imposing, the same can be told for the African natives and the crocodiles that took part in the movie.The natives steal the show by looking genuinely menacing and the crocodiles are furious beasts that rule supreme.

If you’re a die-hard jungle/action fan ,then go ahead and have a look on this one.If you want to see an extremely relaxing movie(I’m saying  this in a bad way),then be my guest too.If you want to see a really decent actioner,avoid this one…
