In a small village, somewhere in France, German soldiers, killed and thrown into the lake by the Resistance during WW II, come back.

Σήμερα θα ασχοληθούμε με μια εμβληματικά κακή ταινία, από κείνες που σε κάνουν να απορείς τι είχαν κατά νου οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι επένδυαν στα μακρινά 80ies τα χρήματά τους στο σινεμά τρόμου και όχι μόνο…

Πρώτα λίγα στοιχεία για την εταιρεία παραγωγής, την απίθανη Eurocine.Το συγκεκριμένο κινηματογραφικό παράδοξο ιδρύθηκε το 1937 από το Marius Lessoeur αλλά μεγαλούργησε από τη δεκαετία του 60 και μετά όταν ανέλαβε την αρχηγία της οικογενειακής επιχείρησης ο υιός Daniel Lessoeur.Aπό εκείνο το σημείο και μετά το συγκεκριμένο στούντιο πρόσφερε στον παγκόσμιο πολιτισμό  «διαμάντια» όπως τα: “The Awful Dr; Orloff”  , Cannibal Terror,Justine  De Sade,Barbarian Goddess,Cannibals,a Virgin among the living dead,Commando Mengele, Dark mission και η λίστα μπορεί να συνεχιστεί για πολύ ακόμα,ο Lessoeur έδωσε βήμα σε σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Jess Franco  και μας στιγμάτισε αιώνια με τις διασκεδαστικά κακές ταινίες που μας πρόσφερε . Κυριο συστατικό των ταινιών της Eurocine  ,ο χαμηλός προυπολογισμός,κάτι που συνετέλεσε στη δημιουργία  πρόχειρων ταινιών. Οι ταινίες της Eurocine ήταν κακοφωτισμένες,κακοφωτογραφισμένες με προσχηματικά σενάρια και πανάθλιες ερμηνείες από ηθοποιούς που ταύτισαν το όνομά τους με την εταιρεία,όπως οι:Howard Vernon,Olivier Mathot,Anthony Mayans.

Για όλα αυτά και ακόμα περισσότερα ευχαριστούμε τη Eurocine…

Όπως καταλαβαίνει κανείς το Zombie Lake είναι μια  ταινία που μπορεί να αποθεώσει κανείς για όλους τους λάθος λόγους.Αρχικά το θέμα της ταινίας που παίρνει την ιστορία του Shockwaves της στραπατσάρει τη μούρη και την παραδίδει εκ νέου παραμορφωμένη στην κοινωνία,έπειτα οι πάναργοι ρυθμοί,το τραγικό  zombie make up,η υπερπληθώρα γυμνών σκηνών(στην uncut έκδοση),η δραματική παράλληλη πλοκή… τι να πρωτοθαυμάσει κανείς

Η ταινία αρχικά ανατέθηκε στο Jess Franco ,o οποίος αποχώρησε και θεωρητικά ολοκληρώθηκε από τον Jean Rollin, o οποίος και πήρε τελικά το σκηνοθετικό credit,στη θέση του θα το σκεφτόμουν διπλά πριν βάλω το όνομά μου σε αυτήν την ταινία…

Η αλήθεια είναι πως το παρόν μοιάζει τραγικά με ταινία του Franco,για να εμβαθύνω λίγο περισσότερο θα ευχόμουν να μοιάζει με ταινία του Rollin,o oποίος υπήρξε σίγουρα πολύ πιο εμπνευσμένος δημιουργός από τον Ισπανό Αρχιερέα του τρας,αλλά δυστυχώς η ταινία δείχνει σε όλα τα επίπεδα σαν δημιούργημα της 80ies περιόδου του Franco.Mαύρο χάλι δηλαδή,διασκεδαστικό μεν,χάλι δε…

Σίγουρα δεν είναι ταινία για τον καθένα και δικαίως  παίρνει το βραβείο του χειρότερου  Zombie movie (με αναπληρωματικό το Oasis of the Zombies του  Franco) που γυρίστηκε ποτέ.

It’s a futile attempt to write something about “Zombie lake” that hasn’t already been written as this film is legendary in the B-movie fan circuit but let’s share a few thoughts about this infamous creation of the Lessoeur/Franco/Rollin/Laserna team.

Zombie Lake never ceases to amaze me…I am perplexed by the fact that I keep on discovering tiny details on this one.Details that subsequently make this one look even more goofy and ridiculous than I remembered ,it’s pointless to reveal the exact bits that keep on amusing me as they’re: 1)too many to be recorded thouroughly and 2)I don’t want to spoil the joy of discovering them on your own.

Keywords however can be included here:Gratuitous nudity,dirtiest lake filmed in the history of cinema,stupid underwater scenes shot in a relatively clean swimming pool(these ones look hilariously great when juxtaposed to the lake scenes),green zombie make up,sub par direction,recycled stock footage and the list can go on and on.

If I had to summarize the nonsense of this movie with a single scene I would opt for the scene where the two nazi zombies fight and one of them pulls out a knife ,what the bloody hell for???? To kill the  opponent ,who happens to be an equally dead for years ,green-faced zombie??This priceless moment among lots of other similar moments pretty much summarizes and epitomizes what someone will encounter after they press play,you have been warned.

 

Riti, magie nere e segrete orge nel trecento… (1973)

A group of vampires keep the body of a witch in a castle cellar. They require virgin blood to resurrect her. A party of people arrive and things kick off.

I had watched this one many,many years ago on dvd by salvation/redemption and while the yesterday’s viewing wasn’t exactly a revelation,this one still seems to hold some appeal.

For starters Polselli wasn’t your typical “serie B” director but had his own touch on utterly sleazy film making,cinephiles who have viewed some of his salvaged films like:Delirio caldo,la verita secondo satana and his over-the-top mondo “rivelazioni di uno psichiatra…” can testify that the late Renato was a truly deranged director.His preoccupation with graphic nudity,sleaze and violence could be attributed to a greater scheme of things that had his roots in guerilla film making and was aiming at shocking the prudish values of the conservative Italian society.

Truth be told,it’s hard to piece the puzzle together and to read behind the lines judging from this film.The Reincarnation of Isabelle is indeed a visual assault immersed in a great psychedelic and vividly colourful cinematography.The Polselli’s abrupt editing gymnastics punish the retina of the eye but on the grounds of the subject matter presented,I find it hard to believe that this occult/horror/vampire/sleaze romp was trying to shatter the very fundaments of 70ies Italy.Other than pointing the finger at the obscurantist tactics of the Italian plebaeans who burned the titular Isabelle at the stake,little to nothing ties this one to the Italian director’s non-comformist ideas.

What we are left with is an entertaining mess of a storyline,trippy visuals,great lighting,lots of scandily clad euro babes and some splendidly tacky outfits and performances by the Polselli regulars.Even though I am somehow under the impression that Rita Calderoni was underused on this one.

All in all ,fans of Italian genre cinema should already know of Polselli and watch his movies.In my view each and every movie of this mad Italian can offer at least something worthwhile to the initiated viewer.This one is no exception.

Plus and this is a big plus,it features Rita Calderoni,period…

Λίγος ακόμα βαμπιρικός τρόμος από τον εκκεντρικό αντάρτη του Ιταλικού genre cinema Ρενάτο Πολσέλι δε νομίζω να βλάπτει κανέναν.

Πριν από 500 χρόνια  η νεαρή Ιζαμπέλα κάηκε στην πυρά από τον όχλο κατηγορούμενη για δαιμονολατρεία και βαμπιρισμό,η ταινία μας διηγείται τη ιστορία μίας ομάδας ατόμων που εγκαθίστανται στο κάστρο όπου έζησε και υπέφερε η νεαρή.Οι συνδαιτυμόνες προσπαθούν με διάφορους ανόσιους τρόπους να επαναφέρουν στη ζωή τη νεκρή Ιζαμπέλα και σύντομα η κατάσταση θα ξεφύγει από κάθε έλεγχο

Το παρόν σίγουρα δε μου έριξε τις σφαλιάρες που μου έριξε όταν το πρωτοείδα,πρίν από δέκα χρόνια,αλλά το αναρχικό μοντάζ,η ιδιαίτερη σκηνοθεσία,η ΕΚΠΛΗΚΤΙΚΗ φωτογραφία και η γενικότερη ψυχεδέλεια της ταινίας,μόνο απαρατήρητα δεν περνάνε.

Η ταινία σε σημεία αψηφά της αφηγηματικές νόρμες και διολισθαίνει στο απόλυτο χάος,αλλά πρώτον είναι φίλμ του Πολσέλι και όχι του Σίντνευ Λιούμετ και δεύτερον,η αναρχία και το Σουρεάλ του πράγματος είναι που δίνουν παραπάνω νοστιμιά στο τελικό πιάτο .

Ετυμηγορία:Παρά το γεγονός οτι το συγκεκριμένο φιλμ δεν ακουμπά το επίπεδο του “Delirio Caldo” νομίζω οτι οι φάνς του Eurohorror θα έπρεπε να ασχοληθούν με το παρόν.

Pure excellence by Jean Rollin.It’s no secret that the writer is a huge fan of the French Auteur,especially of his most characteristic period (Fascination,the nude Vampire,the iron Rose,night of the hunted,Grapes of Death,the Living dead Girl).Lips of blood is part of Rollin’s classic period and bears all the characteristics that made the work of Rollin so distinctive.

But what is so characteristic when we are talking about Rollin?

For starters, his take on horror cinema was totally original. He utilized arthouse cinema cinematography values and plot trappings and while his lush visual compositions are met with general appeal one cannot generally claim the same about his storylines. Truth be told his screenplays were of an acquired taste and not for everyone. Rarely is over the top gore to be found in a Rollin film, even though there are some gory exceptions in his filmography  f.e: Grapes of death & living dead girl.

Lips of blood  is no exception to the French director’s general rule and serves perfectly the Rollin paradigm of what a horror movie really is. Beauty, despair, loneliness, sensuality are combined perfectly in a seemingly pedestrian vampiric story.

Frederick sees a photograph of a ruined seaside castle, which triggers a strange childhood memory. He then goes on a strange quest, aided by four female vampires, to find the castle and the beautiful woman who lives there. A woman that he fell in love with when he was a little boy. His mother refuses to be of any assistance to his quest to find the aforementioned ruins or the woman and tries to protect him from the tragic past of his family.

Seemingly straightforward but very dreamlike and evocative “Lips of blood” plays along the lines of “iron rose” or “night of the hunted” and tells the tale of a love that seems to be doomed. The end might seem “off the cuff”  but it really serves the needs of the narration and it is a very logical conclusion to this beautiful film.

As magnificent as “Fascination” this one comes with the highest of recommendations.

…on the other hand if you want to go bonkers there is another movie for you…

Il était une fois le diable – Devil Story(1985)

Cast: Véronique Renaud, Marcel Portier, Catherine Day

The story of this one is a mess. The plot is set on the picturesque French countryside and involves a deformed , SS uniform sporting,  man (also referred to as the monster)who does nothing but dispatching random passers-by for no particular reason.A newly-wed couple wanders aimlessly in the aforementioned countryside, a flat tire occurs, the couple is in need of a shelter and resorts to a local hotel, which is ran by an elderly couple. The couple keeps on telling the tale of how doomed the region is , they imply that a wild black horse might actually be the devil who has cast his curse on this otherwise peaceful area and finally a shipwreck subplot is also involved.

To make things even crazier the newly-wed bride bears an uncanny similarity to the deceased sister of the deformed monster .

This one plays like Polselli meets Franco while both being on drugs. Add a touch of utterly trashy Eurocine production values and an incomprehensible storyline  thrown in the mix and what you’ll get is of course bloody brilliant for all the wrong reasons. Everything and I mean everything is just randomly thrown together in the mix and if someone thinks that the Eurocine period of Jess Franco was bad cinema ,just wait until you encounter this one.

The closest parallel that I can draw is maybe with “Zombie lake” or “revenge of the living dead girls” but still the words seem to fail to properly describe how chaotic “Devil Story” actually is.

It’s a very entertaining mess of cheap effects, nonsensical violence , inane screenplay and bad film making that should be cherished by all bad cinema freaks.

Deranged

A man living in rural Wisconsin takes care of his bed-ridden mother, who is very domineering and teaches him that all women are evil. After she dies he misses her, so a year later he digs her up and takes her home. He learns about taxidermy and begins robbing graves to get materials to patch her up, and inevitably begins looking for fresher sources of materials. Based closely on the true story of Ed Gein.

The Plainfield maniac,Ed Gein,a legendary sociopath,a one of a kind case in the annals of worldwide criminology.This is the story of the man that scarred the face of the Fifties beyond recognition,a man that has inspired tons of pop culture & counterculture representatives ranging from Tobe Hooper to Slayer.

Deranged,a film that depicts as closely as humanly possible the story of Ed Gein, is a success of humble origins,done on a tight budget but  a film of very solid foundations nonetheless.The cinematography remains moody throughout the entire duration of the film,the gritty moments are very gritty and the sporadic comedic moments are brought to life in a tasteful manner.No fanfare and sensationalism are employed and even though this flick is categorized under the exploitation genre,not for a single moment does it feel overly tongue and cheek.Fortunately even though humorous lines of the motel hell kind are sometimes utilized the movie doesn’t seem to become a parody of the genre it chose to serve .

Deranged is a powerful experience aided by a couple of unforgettable moments,such as the entire sequence involving Mary the barmaid,a death mask sporting Roberts Blossoms(Ezra Cobb-Ed Gein)and a nice company of corpses.The ending sequence is also a work of art,downbeat and very gritty,a truly apocalyptic finale.

Roberts Blossoms’ performance is also a glorious victory,as this very capable character actor really had to swim in some very treacherous and murky waters in order to portray a unique case such as Gein/Cobb,needless to say that his incarnation of Ezra Cobb is excellent.The rest of the cast also delivers solid performances.Kudos should also be given to the adequate special effects bz the great Tom Saviny,in his first ever appearance as special effects director.

Deranged is a triumph of independent film making,from an era when horror was horror and cinema was cinema.It should be watched and cherished at all costs.

Έχω κάνει δυνατό σερί τώρα τελευταία με το Αμερικάνικο exploitation,λίγο το Manson Family του Βαν Μπέμπερ, λίγο αυτό εδώ,φαίνεται με θέλει το τόπι.

Ο Ed Gein είναι ένας των μέγιστων μορφών στην πινακοθήκη τεράτων της Αμερικάνικης ιστορίας.Ο χασάπης του Plainfield είχε να αντιμετωπίσει μερικά δυσεπίλυτα ζητήματα,απότοκα της υπερβολικά καταπιεστικής και αφάνταστα μισογυνικής  ανατροφής της οποίας έτυχε από τη δεσποτική μητέρα του.Όταν αυτή η “ψυχούλα” λοιπόν απεδήμησεν εις κύριον και άφησε τον Ed μοναχό του,τα πράγματα περιπλέχτηκαν ελαφρώς, αφού ο φίλος μας έμπλεξε το cross dressing με την ευγενή τέχνη του εκδοροσφαγέα και τα αποτελέσματα αποτέλεσαν θεματική για πλείστους εκφραστές της pop κουλτούρας,από τον Tobe Hooper ώς τους Slayer. Το deranged λοιπόν πραγματεύεται αυτήν ακριβώς την ιστορία και το κάνει με αριστουργηματικό τρόπο.

Διαμαντάκι λοιπόν σου λέω, το παρόν τεμάχιο.Η φωτογραφία είναι αυτή η όμορφη seventies μουντή κατάσταση που έχουμε όλοι λατρέψει σε άπειρες ανεξάρτητες Αμερικάνικες ταινίες από εκείνη τη δεκαετία,η μουσική επένδυση είναι απολαυστικά γκροτέσκα,το κάστ με προεδρεύοντα τον Roberts Blossoms κεντάει όμορφες ερμηνείες,ειδικά ο Blossoms με αυτή του τη μορφή και με αυτή του την ερμηνεία μάλλον θα τα κατάφερε να τρυπώσει σε πολλούς εφιάλτες…

και πως να μην τα καταφέρει αφού κάνα δύο σκηνές στο deranged σηκώνουν την τρίχα κάγκελο,ενώ το φινάλε λάμπει απόλυτα καθάριο μέσα στην απολυτότητά του και τον παραλογισμό του.

Θα ήθελα το παρόν φιλμ λίγο πιο σκοτεινό,αδιάλλακτο και αδιαφανές και θα εξηγήσω τι εννοώ.Σίγουρα θα θυμάστε εκείνες τις ηλίθιες σλάπστικ σκηνές στο αυθεντικό Last house on the left,ναι εκείνες τις χαζομάρες που έκανε ο Μάρτιν Κοβ εννοώ. Ε λοιπόν υπάρχουν και εδώ αντίστοιχες “λυτρωτικές” σκηνές,ίσως λιγότερο γυμνασιακές από τις αντίστοιχες της ταινίας του Κρέηβεν,αλλά παρ’όλα αυτά υπάρχουν,το πως θα τις εκλάβει κανείς είναι μάλλον θέμα γούστου.Ο γράφων ας πούμε δεν τις θεώρησε εκτός κλίματος,αλλά σίγουρα δημιουργούν κάποιες μικρές ρυτίδες στον ιστό της ταινίας.

Τέλος πάντων τι ζητάω και εγώ…

Όπως και να’χει το παρόν συστήνεται ανεπιφύλακτα .
