Σλάσερ πανδαισία χρωμάτων και εικόνων στην (προ)τελευταία ανάρτηση του χρόνου.

Ένα νεαρό αγόρι παρακολουθεί τους γονείς να δολοφονούνται από έναν κλέφτη ντυμένο Άγιο Βασίλη. Ξοδεύει τα νιάτα του σε ορφανοτροφείο,κλεισμένος στον εαυτό του, αλλά τα λογικά του μπαίνουν σε ακόμα μεγαλύτερη δοκιμασία από τις ακραίες πρακτικές της σκληρόκαρδης Ηγουμένης που τιμωρεί όλους όσους δρούν με άτακτο τρόπο.Βρίσκει τελικά μια δουλειά σε ένα τοπικό κατάστημα, όπου τελικά χάνει τα λογικά του και προβαίνει σε ωμότητες όταν καλείται να φορέσει ένα κοστούμι Άγιου Βασίλη.Η δολοφονική του φρενίτιδα τον οδηγεί σιγά-σιγά πίσω στο ορφανοτροφείο,όπου το τέλος έρχεται με δραματικό τρόπο.

Άλλη μια έκφανση του Αμερικάνικου ονείρου,αυτή των χαρούμενων Χριστουγέννων, πέφτει νεκρή,θύμα της δολοφονικής μανίας του νεαρού Billy και του slasher είδους εν γένει.Και η Αμερικανική συντήρηση δε γουστάρει καθόλου,όπως αποδεικνύεται από τις αντιδράσεις απέναντι στο συγκεκριμένο φίλμ.Γι άλλη μια φορά η κοινωνία αρνείται να κοιτάξει το είδωλό της στον καθρέπτη και προτιμά να κρύψει τις παθογένειές της κάτω από το χαλί.Ο Μπίλλυ είναι θύμα αυτών των αγκυλώσεων-αυτός τον οποίον πλάκωσε το προαναφερθέν χαλί.Μεγαλωμένος σε Προτεσταντικό ορφανοτροφείο,θύμα της απάνθρωπης διαπαιδαγώγησης και διαλυμένος ψυχοπνευματικά από τις “τυφλές γωνίες” του συστήματος.

Ως γνωστόν το καλό slasher πολώνει και το συγκεκριμένο φίλμ είναι ένα καλό slasher.Διαθέτει νευρώδη ρυθμό,αξιομνημόνευτες σεκάνς δολοφονιών,ικανή ποσότητα gore,ατμόσφαιρα γεμάτη suspense και γενικά όλα τα στοιχεία που κάνουν μια ταινία του είδους να λειτουργήσει…

A young boy watches his parents killed by a thief in a Santa suit. He spends his youth in an orphanage, staying quietly to his self, but his mind is further bent by an ironhanded Mother Superior who punishes everyone that acts in a naughty manner. He finally gets a job at a local store, where he finally snaps when he is required to wear a Santa suit, and goes on a killing spree that leads him slowly back to the orphanage.

Another great slasher from the golden years of old.Truth be told,if a slasher flick is met with controversy,then it probably means business.We have seen the same public outcry in the case of William Lustig’s horror masterpiece “Maniac”.”Silent night,deadly Night” also stirred some furious reactions by mostly conservative Bible Belt congregants who claimed that an axe-wielding Santa Claus was an image improper and obscene for the youth of America.Little did they know that the youth of America would be ahead of the leaning curve as the Columbine massacre(among others)showcased a few years later.

“Silent night,deadly Night” features all those great characteristics that made the slasher genre so popular.Atmospheric set pieces,above average production,average performances,an adequate direction,some memorable killings and an unoriginal storyline that against all odds works.All persons naughty get punished and the Mother Superior represents the punisher god.The inherent callous tendencies that lurk within monotheistic religions and the absolute prudence and conservative nonsense that dwell in Catholic and protestant doctrines.

To sum it all up.This is a top-notch slasher.The brutal and sinister moments are delivered in spades and overshadow the ever present B-movie flaws(f.e:superficial character development,average acting )and the atmosphere of the film is intense and suspenseful as it should be in such a motion picture.

One Man Force (1989)

Η αποθέωση του κλισαρισμένου αστυνομικού buddy movie χτύπησε το Δέκτη μου.

Ο John Matuszak είναι ο Jake Swan,o άνθρωπος αρκούδα.Ένας μπάτσος που με το γιγαντιαίο του σώμα κρύβει τον ήλιο.Όταν σε μια επιχείρηση εναντίον μιας αδίστακτης σπείρας Λατίνων πρεζεμπόρων,σκοτώνεται με τραγικό τρόπο ο κολλητός και συνεργάτης του,ο Jake γίνεται πατέρας,σύζυγος,εραστής,εκδικητής…και μόνος εναντίον όλων τσακίζει τα μεγάλα κεφάλια της εμπορίας ναρκωτικών,όπως και τη διαφθορά στο ίδιο το “Σώμα”.

Φάτε πετυχημένη καμπάνια προώθησης ταινίας και σλόγκαν από άλλο πλανήτη…

Άς ξεκινήσουμε με τα θετικά:Φίλε θεατά…ποια θετικά?Μιλάμε για ταινία με πρωταγωνιστή το John Matuszak,όπου το ένα κλισέ διαδέχεται το άλλο με καταιγιστικούς ρυθμούς.Το μόνο ίσως θετικό είναι οτι ο συγκεκριμένος “ηθοποιός” δίνει άλλη διάσταση στην έννοια overacting.Ο συνδιασμός σώματος,φωνής,φάτσας,κινήσεων και λεγομένων σχηματίζουν ένα τρας αραβούργημα,ένα ποίημα,το οποίο παρ’οτι δεν ξέρουμε αν το επιδίωξε η παραγωγή.καθιστά παρ’όλα αυτά την ταινία αξιομνημόνευτη.

Μιλάμε για αυτό το άτομο:

Πως να δεχτώ εγω μετά οτι αυτό το είδωλο πέθανε λίγους μήνες μετά την ολοκλήρωση αυτής της ταινίας από υπερβολική χρήση ναρκωτικών(γεγονός το οποίο αποτελεί την απόλυτη τραγική ειρωνεία)

Anyway,αρκετά με τα δράματα.Η ταινία αντικειμενικά έχει τα χάλια της τα μαύρα…Είναι ένα φλάτ actioner που σου τσακίζει την ψυχολογία με τον καταιγισμό από τα κλισέ που σου ρίχνει στη μάπα.Το γεγονός οτι B-movie θεοί σαν τους:Charles Napier,Richard Lynch αχρηστεύονται σε μικρούς ρόλους επίσης δε βοηθά καθόλου τη συνολική εικόνα της ταινίας.

Αλλά ,εντελώς υποκειμενικά μιλώντας,η παρουσία και ερμηνεία του “ειδώλου” καθιστά την ταινία “Τοτέμ” για τους οπαδούς της ξεχωριστής Τρας ψυχαγωγίας…

 

Embarrassing,painfully trashy yet amusing cop/buddy movie actioner with “The Goonies” Sloth turned super cop,great,late John Matuszak…

Synopsis:In this action packed film, an L.A. cop speeds off to get revenge upon the dirty drug-dealing dogs who killed his partner

Well,all I can say is that the above synopsis doesn’t do justice to the trashfest this film is.

“One Man Force” is probably similar to a zillion other 80ies action movies.The plot is unbearably predictable and the genre cliches are delivered in spades,but it is blessed with the presence of John Matuszak.To say that Matuszak’s performance is trashy and overacted is the definition of understatement.If you want to witness how it feels watching a giant Man acting as if he was high on Coke and exclaiming the stupidest lines ever,then step in and enjoy the ride.

The fact that die-hard trash fans will find a few redeeming qualities in this one doesn’t imply that “One Man Force” is a good action flick.

It’s one of those cases that a terrible movie can also be an entertaining one…

 

Cop (1988)

Ισχυρό αστυνομικό θρίλερ με ερμηνεία Α’εθνικής από τον James Woods.

Bασισμένο στη νουβέλα του James Ellroy “Blood on the moon” το “Cop” είναι μια ταινία υψηλών οκτανίων.Χωρίς να είναι σε καμία περίπτωση αρχετυπικό φίλμ του είδους,παρόλα αυτά δρέπει όλα τα πλεονεκτήματα της στιβαρής σκηνοθεσίας,του καλού κάστ και των καταραμμένων,νουάρ αναφορών των οποίων βρίθει η λογοτεχνία του Ellroy.

O Lloyd Hopkins, ένας  σκληροτράχηλος  ντετέκτιβ του τμήματος Ανθρωποκτονιών του Λος Άντζελες  βρίσκεται  στα ίχνη ενός κατά συρροή δολοφόνου που σκοτώνει με στυγερό τρόπο γυναίκες στην πόλη των Αγγέλων. Η αναζήτηση του τον οδηγεί μέσα στους κόλπους ενός κόσμου που έχει γίνει πλέον το δικό του φυσικό περιβάλλον -ο σκληρός κόσμος του εγκλήματος,της διαφθοράς των ναρκωτικών και της πορνείας , όπου η “αθωότητα σκοτώνει” . Παραδόξως, είναι επίσης ένας κόσμος παθολογικής αγάπης, μυστικών θαυμαστών, ρομαντικής φεμινιστικής ποίησης και σύγχρονης ιπποσύνης.

Ο Hopkins είναι το ΄Αλφα και το Ωμέγα στο παρόν φίλμ,σαν τον διεφθαρμένο μπάτσο του Harvey Keitel στο “Bad Lieutenant” του Abel Ferrara,o Lloyd Hopkins του James Woods είναι ένας αντιήρωας σε έναν κόσμο γεμάτο “δηλητηριώδεις” περσόνες και πληθώρα από πειρασμούς.Ένας άνθρωπος που έχει κοιτάξει μέσα στην Άβυσσο και έχει δει το πρόσωπό του να καθρεφτίζεται εντός της.Θα μετέλθει οποιοδήποτε τρόπο για να πετύχει τους στόχους του,στόχοι που χαρακτηρίζονται από ένα ιδιότυπο κώδικα ηθικής και που δεν του εξασφαλίζουν καμία αποδοχή εντός της υπηρεσίας του.

Το παίξιμο του Woods είναι στιβαρό και νευρώδες και ο βετεράνος ηθοποιός αποφεύγει με χαρακτηριστική άνεση την παγίδα του overacting.Οι υπόλοιποι του κάστ τα πάνε επίσης μια χαρά.Στο κομμάτι της σκηνοθεσίας  επικρατεί μια διεκπεραιωτική αντιμετώπιση από τον Harris,αλλά η noir αισθητική δίνει πόντους στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα.Παρά τις αρετές της η ταινία χάνει στο κομμάτι της πρωτοτυπίας,αφού το σενάριο ακολουθεί τετριμμένες αφηγηματικές οδούς και βασίζεται αποκλειστικά στις αρετές των ηθοποιών.

Το φινάλε όμως  είναι βαρύ και ασήκωτο,μηδενιστικό και πλήρως εναρμονισμένο με το όλο κλίμα του φίλμ,σκάει σαν βαριοπούλα στο μετωπιαίο λοβό και μένει στο μυαλό του θεατή για αρκετό καιρό μετά τη θέαση της ταινίας.

Αν κάποιος είναι οπαδός του αστυνομικού θρίλερ δεν βρίσκω λόγο να μην του αρέσει το “Cop”,αφού πρόκειται για μια ταινία που κερδίζει το θεατή παρά τις μικρές της αδυναμίες.

Gritty & downright nasty cop/thriller based on a James Ellroy novel.The fact that the screenplay is based on the particular writer’s work means business,as we all known that Ellroy’s stories are blessed with downright anti-heroic characters and violence galore.

Lloyd Hopkins, a hard-boiled American police detective is on the trail of a mass murderer who is victimizing women in Los Angeles. The pursuit leads him through a world that has become his own natural habitat – a nasty world of crime, drugs, prostitution and male hustlers where “innocence kills” and continued exposure corrupts. Paradoxically, it’s also a world of love, secret admirers, romantic feminist poets and modern chivalry.

James Woods’ performance is probably the biggest asset of the film.He really is one of those actors who live and breathe their role and his performance brings the film to a first class level.Regardless of the fact that the storyline revolves around Woods’ psychotic cop character,there are serious doubts whether another male actor could incarnate the Lloyd Hopkins character with the same spark and charisma.

I liked the noir oriented, ominous atmosphere,the seedy alleys,the shady female and male characters,the nastiness of the murders and the fantastic film score.I didn’t like the fact that “Cop” is hardly an original film.Unfortunately the plot is very unoriginal and has the obvious “holes” ,for example little care has been put into explaining details regarding characters as the killer,the deputy Sheriff,or Hopkins’ wife and daughter.That’s a shame…for the film would have been much richer without those flaws.Despite the film being flawed,you can’t deny the fact that “Cop” is very watchable.

A good film and a relatively successful viewing experience with a charismatic James Woods’ performance.There’s no reason for anyone to dislike this one,especially if he/she digs the cop/thriller genre films.

Better Watch Out… Better Not Cry… Or You May DIE!

Το παρόν πραγματεύεται την ιστορία του Χάρι ,ενός αγοριού που αγαπά τα Χριστούγεννα .Τραυματίζεται ψυχικά όταν ως αγόρι γίνεται μάρτυρας μιας φρικτής για αυτόν εικόνας:Της μαμάς του να κάνει σεξ με τον Άγιο Βασίλη.Κατά συνέπεια, μαθαίνει ότι ο Άγιος Βασίλης δεν είναι πραγματικός . Καθ ‘όλη την υπόλοιπη ζωή του,αυτός ο μίζερος και δυστυχισμένος κατασκευαστής παιχνιδιών προσπαθεί να κάνει το πνεύμα των Χριστουγέννων πραγματικότητα . Παθιάζεται με τη συμπεριφορά των παιδιών και την ποιότητα των παιχνιδιών που φτιάχνει. Όταν αντιμετωπίζεται με υποκρισία και κυνισμό , η διολίσθησή του στην παράνοια τον αναγκάζει να εξαπολύσει τη Χριστουγενιάτικη δολοφονική του μανία.

Υποτονικό και θλιβερό, εν μέρει grindhouse , εν μέρει, slasher ταινία τρόμου . Το “Christmas Evil” είναι άλλο ένα διασκεδαστικό παράδοξο.Οφθαλμοφανώς πολύ χαμηλού προϋπολογισμού, αλλά ευνοημένο στο μέγιστο βαθμό από μια πολύ πειστική ερμηνεία , ευγενική προσφορά του Brandon Maggart ( Harry ) , η ταινία που παρουσιάζεται έχει “γεράσει” αρκετά καλά και έχει αρκετό ενδιαφέρον,παρά το γεγονός οτι υποφέρει από κάποια ζητήματα με το ρυθμό της,ιδίως κατά το πρώτο της μισό.

Φυσικά, η ταινία περιστρέφεται γύρω από το χαρακτήρα του Harry, ο οποίος διατηρεί λίστες με τα ονόματα όσων έχουν φερθεί με καλό ή κακό τρόπο όλο το χρόνο μέχρι την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων,οπότε η  εύθραυστη ψυχική του υγεία καταρρέει και υποκύπτει στο Χριστουγεννιάτικο εφιάλτη του ή όπως λέει ο ίδιος ” βρίσκει επιτέλους τις σωστές νότες για το σκοπό του ” .

Η βία σε αυτήν την ταινία διατηρείται σε πολύ χαμηλά επίπεδα και τα Κάλαντα των Χριστουγέννων αποκτούν  νέο νόημα  καθώς βλέπουμε το Harry αργά αλλά σταθερά να βυθίζεται στην τρέλα.Tο φινάλε όμως θυμίζει ταινία της Disney και είναι για μπούφλες …

Όπως και να’χει το “Christmas Evil” έχει αρκετό ενδιαφέρον…

Christmas Evil is the story of Harry,a boy who loves Christmas. He is scarred as a boy when he witnesses his mom having sex with Santa Claus consequently he learns that Santa is not real. Throughout the rest of his life, the toy-maker tries to make the Christmas spirit a reality. He becomes obsessed with the behavior of children and the quality of the toys he makes. When he is met with hypocrisy and cynicism, the resulting snap causes him to go on a yuletide killing spree…

Downbeat and sad,partly a grindhouse,partly a slasher film.”Christmas Evil” is a cool oddity.Obviously very low budget,but blessed by a very plausible performance,courtesy of Brandon Maggart (Harry),the film presented has dated quite well and watchable through and through,if a bit slow paced.

Of course the movie revolves around the Harry character,a wretched toy factory employee,who keeps lists with the names of those who have been good or naughty throughout the year,until on Christmas Eve his frail sanity snaps and succumbs to his Christmas nightmare or as he says “he finds the right notes for his tune”.

The violence in this film is kept minimal and the Christmas Carols get new meaning as we watch Harry slowly but steadily descending into madness.The ending beggars belief though…

All in all,a pretty cool & original Christmas horror.

Burning Vengeance(1989)

Σκουπιδο-action ανουσιότητα που κάνει τις ταινίες του David Prior να φαίνονται σαν αριστουργήματα της έβδομης τέχνης.

Ο Μπροκ Τζένεσις είναι ένας σκληρός μπάτσος της δίωξης ναρκωτικών που πέφτει θύμα ενέδρας που του στήνουν τα τσιράκια του μεγαλέμπορου ναρκωτικών Μπεκρίς.Στη συμπλοκή χάνει τη γυναίκα του,το παιδί του και ο ίδιος τραυματίζεται πολύ σοβαρά.Μετά από σειρά πλαστικών εγχειρήσεων είναι έτοιμος να ξαναφτιάξει τη ζωή του όταν μαθαίνει οτι τα δύο του αδέρφια έχουν πέσει επίσης νεκρά από τις σφαίρες της συμμορίας του Μπεκρίς.Όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο βγαίνει στο δρόμο και εξαπολύει “Καυτή εκδίκηση”.

Με τον άνθρωπο μηχανή-Ρόμπερτ Πέντζ,γράφει η κασέτα,με τον άνθρωπο Οξιά,διορθώνω εγώ,αφού ο συμπαθής Πέντζ γυμναστής ήταν ο άνθρωπος,όχι ηθοποιός.Για να σας δώσω και άλλα trivia,αφού η ταινία δεν βλέπεται,ας συμπληρώσω οτι ο Πέντζ υπήρξε φίλος του μεγάλου Άρνολντ Σβαρτσενέγκερ και τον ντούμπλαρε σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις αφού η ομοιότητά τους είναι σκανδαλώδης.

Αυτά λοιπόν, είναι τα 90 λεπτά δημοσιότητας του Πέντζ.Η ταινία είναι τόσο κακή,φτηνιάρικη και τραγελαφική που θυμίζει παρωδία του είδους.Το πρόβλημα είναι οτι ο σκηνοθέτης-σεναριογράφος Ronald C. Ross μάλλον τα εννοεί αυτά που κάνει…

Για του λόγου το αληθές:Μοντάζ για φυλακή,ερμηνείες για δημόσιο μαστίγωμα,φωτογραφία που θυμίζει τις τσόντες του μεγάλου Μπέρτο και location που θυμίζει Πακιστανικό action.Αυτά…

Το οτι είδα το έργο έως το τέλος,οφείλεται στην παρανοική αίσθηση καθήκοντος και στην αρρωστημένη περιέργεια που με διέπουν.

Guerilla film-making ,extremely dated ,even for 1989,70ies action aesthetics,non-acting,shoe string budget and Arnold Schwarzeneger references blend not-so-nice together in this embarrassing obscurity(10 reviews in IMDB).

Brock Genesis is approached to re-enter his old job as a DEA agent after he learns that his wife and child had been killed by Mexican drug lords. He burns with vengeance in a touching scene of his wife played by Tammy Coates and his little girl,Emily, cry out to him in a vision.Soon enough he goes to an electronics store to equip himself with arms and various electronic equipment and after that all hell breaks loose as he dispatches the entire Becris’ drug trafficking gang  in a vigilante way.

This film is,as already stated,paradoxically dated.The editing is atrocious,the performances are horrendous,the cinematography is bland and the flick is filled with unintentionally comical gags of Laurel-Hardy slapstick quality(I say this in a bad way).The Genesis’ antics as far as inventions go,contain some gore and this is something quite odd if cool for an action movie in this vein.

Brock Genesis is brought to life by none other than Robert Pentz an Arnold Schwarzeneger friend, stand-in and Gym owner.Well,all I can say is that Pentz emulated the big Arnie so much that it is grotesque.At times this movie feels like an action parody of sorts,as if Mel Brooks shot something action oriented just for the laugh of it.

My verdict is that “Burning Vengeance” is a non movie.It’s an Ed Wood oriented interpretation of the action genre.I watched it til’the end out of morbid curiosity.At moments I was scratching my head in disbelief,but I survived…

The Gifted(1989)

Το “The Gifted” δεν έχει καμία ελπίδα στα μάτια κανενός θεατή αφού δεν διαθέτει τίποτα προς τέρψη των θεατών και κανένα από τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά του σινεμά τρόμου ή δράσης…

Έξι κολλεγιόπαιδα πάνε ολιγοήμερες διακοπές σε ερημική αγροικία,το ρίχνουν στο φάσωμα,το διαλογισμό και προσπαθούν να διαχειριστούν τα υπαρξιακά τους,αλλά πέφτουν θύματα σπείρας τύπου Charles Manson.

ΜΗΔΕΝ…εις το πηλίκο.Ανύπαρκτη ιστορία,ανύπαρκτη,πλοκή,ανύπαρκτη βία,εκνευριστικές ερμηνείες,σαρκοβόρος ρυθμός,χάλια κινηματογράφιση-βιντεοσκόπηση.Με νίκησε,με έριξε στο καναβάτσο,έφαγα χώμα με αυτό το φέσι…

Μη το αγοράσετε νομίζοντας οτι θα δείτε backwoods slasher…καταστρέψτε όποια κόπια βρεθεί στο διάβα σας.Ούτε στον εχθρό μου…

Α turd of epic proportions,”The gifted” is an abominable piece of non-video and maybe the worst direct-to-video film I’ve ever encountered.

The poor plot:

typical slasher/backwoods/haunted house plot dealing with a group of college kids going on vacation in a countryside cabin.There they start having a funny feeling,they sort of think that the surroundings are threatening and in the end the figure out that a Charles Manson type sect is after their sanity.

Crappy cinematography-editing,boring non-action,worthless performances,moronic script make a movie that will make you hate each and every thing about B-movies.Don’t bite the bait:B-movies are fine,this is a non-movie…

Avoid at all costs.

Crash and Burn(1990)

Άλλη μια διασκεδαστική Οργουελικής φύσης post-apocalypse απιθανότητα παραγωγής Fullmoon entertainment μας κρατά παρέα και σήμερα τη νύχτα.

Η Fullmoon του Charles Band ήταν ένα πτωχό πλήν τίμιο στούντιο παραγωγής ταινιών επιστημονικής φαντασίας και δράσης Β’διαλογής και για αυτή του την προσφορά οφείλουμε τουλάχιστον μια ευχαριστία στον προαναφερθέντα σκηνοθέτη-παραγωγό.Πραγματικά δεν ξέρω πως θα ήταν η ζωή μου αν δεν υπήρχαν εταιρίες όπως οι:CANNON,AIP,Omega entertainment,Fullmoon entertainment,Shapiro,Skouras pictures και άλλοι ανεξάρτητοι παραγωγοί.Σίγουρα πολύ πιο βαρετή…

Αρκετά όμως με τις ευχαριστίες!Το παρόν προβαίνει σε εξωτερικό δανεισμό(για να είμαστε και επίκαιροι)από ταινίες όπως “Ο Εξολοθρευτής” και αποδεικνύεται αξιοπρεπέστατο ταινιάκι μέσα στη direct-to-video ταπεινότητά του.Οι ερμηνείες είναι αξιπρεπείς.η φωτογραφία είναι καλή,το άνυδρο και απειλητικό ερημικό location πείθει και προσθέτει πόντους στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα,ενώ τα ειδικά εφφέ είναι απροσδόκητα καλά.

Καλά τα περάσαμε και σήμερα…

Ααα,να βροντοφωνάξω επίσης οτι η ΕΛΛΑΣ ΚΟΣΜΟΣ ΒΙΝΤΕΟ ήταν η καλύτερη βιντεοεταιρία του Γαλαξία…

 

Unicom is a powerful organization overseeing most of the world after its economic collapse. They have banned computers and robots in an attempt to insure “life, liberty, and the pursuit of economic stability”. When a Unicom Synthoid robot infiltrates a southwest TV station and kills the manager, a revolutionary against the gestapo-like corporation, a lowly Unicom delivery man must help the rest of the station survive through the incoming “thermal storm”.

Very watchable late sci-fi/post-apocalypse entry featuring a really nasty and menacing  android,courtesy of Charles Band’s FULLMOON Entertainment.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Moon_Features)

Of course this one goes along the lines of “The terminator” and it might appall the squeamish due to its “direct-to-video” nature…but the smooth pacing,the great desert location,the adequate industrial setting,the cool special effects and the plausible characters-performances by the cast will please the B-movie freaks.

This is another cool flick from the era of pure,unadulterated video entertainment.Too bad all those motion pictures are considered as nothing but bad “cheese” nowadays.

SANTA MARIA…Mother of God…HELP ME!

Ο Τζώρτζ,μανιοκαταθλιπτικός καλλιτέχνης,κάτοικος ενός φτηνού ξενοδοχείου-καταλήματος για διαφόρων ειδών παρίες,κάνει άλμα θανάτου από την ταράτσα του προαναφερθέντος ξενοδοχείου την ημέρα του Halloween.Ώς εκ θαύματος σώζεται,αλλά το κορμί του καταλαμβάνεται από το πνεύμα ενός νεκρού μαφιόζου που είχε βρεί μαρτυρικό θάνατο από τα χέρια των πρώην συνεργατών του.Με το Τζώρτζ σαν ενδιάμεσο,θα τους εκδικηθεί έναν προς έναν ,αλλά Θα βασανίσει το δύσμοιρο ζωγράφο με όνειρα χωρίς οίκτο…

Ταινία τρόμου κόλαφος…

Μιλάμε για αρχετυπική ατμόσφαιρα τρόμου που σε σημεία θυμίζει “Εφιάλτη στο δρόμο με τις Λεύκες”  και “Hellraiser”.Φυσικά είναι αρκετα χαμηλότερου προυπολογισμού από τις προαναφερθείσες ταινίες,αλλά η κινηματογράφιση,τα εφφέ,η σκηνοθεσία και οι ερμηνείες,με καλύτερη όλων,αυτήν του Dennis Lipscomb (Τζώρτζ) αχι απλά αποζημιώνουν,αλλά εκστασιάζουν τον οπαδό του σινεμά τρόμου.

Άψογη ταινία…Κρίμα που είναι αρκετά παραγνωρισμένη και ως εκ τούτου σπάνια.

At Halloween George Miller,a Manic depressive artist, jumps down from the roof of a hotel. But he’s rescued and survives. In psychiatry the young Dr. Jennifer Curtis cares for him and gives him back his will to live. However he suffers from terrible nightmares. Back home, he discovers in the newspaper that his dreams, in which he forces other people to kill themselves in most cruel ways, seem to be reality.

Great supernatural gory and atmospheric horror about a wretched suicidal painter that gets possessed by a late mobster,whose suffering soul has some unpaid debts in the world of the living.

In more than a few occasions this film is a hair raising experience.Dennis Lipscomb’s performance is compelling,his accurate dual depiction of the poor George(the artist that survived a suicidal fall)and the undead mobster Vito Minelli,is a rare occasion in horror cinema and it really catapults the film to a higher level.Other than Lipscomb,the rest of the cast delivers fine performance.The direction by Magar is masterful and the cinematography-camerawork is very atmospheric at places.Last but not least,the gore is present and really adds to the overall ominous atmosphere of the movie.

A glorious win!Too bad this one is so overlooked.

The Survivalist(1987)

Αυτό είναι ένα μάθημα προς όλους τους αριστερόστροφους άνδρες ,οι οποίοι δεν είναι μέλη της  National Rifle Association.Ο γιατρός Ryan της ταινίας είναι η ζωντανή απόδειξη ότι δεν έχει σημασία αν είστε ένας καταξιωμένος γιατρός , θα είστε σύντομα ένα κουφάρι που σαπίζει στην έρημο,αν δεν είστε σύμφωνος με τις αυταρχικές πολεμοχαρείς ντιρεκτίβες του survivalist φίλου σας ,ο οποίος στη συνέχεια χαλαρά θα “κλέψει” τη σύζυγό σας και θα καταλήξετε νεκροί, εξαπατημένοι και σφαγμένοι από ένα ζευγάρι περιπλανώμενων αλητηρίων τους οποίους είχατε βλακωδώς περιμαζέψει όταν σας έκαναν Ώτο-στόπ.

Τέλος πάντων ,ξέχωρα απ’τα στεία,το πρώτο μισό της ταινίας ροκάρει.Σληζιά ολκής, βουτηγμένη στο καζάνι του exploitation. O Jack Tillman είναι ο απόλυτος  survivalist.Μπορεί να χειριστεί πολλούς τύπους πυροβόλων όπλων , μπορεί να κάνει ένα ελικόπτερο να πετάξει, μπορεί να ρίξει μαχαίρια σαν ninja και συν τοις άλλοις είναι και μεγάλος εραστής.Τι άλλο θέλετε.Ο Steve Railsback είναι η τέλεια ενσάρκωση του « survivalist ” .Η ερμηνεία του είναι rip-off Bronson αλλά του το συγχωρούμε.The γεγονός ότι η γυναίκα και η κόρη του σκοτώνονται δεν είναι τίποτα παρά μια λεπτομέρεια.Σαν μάτσο αρσενικό που είναι , καταφέρνει να ρίξει στο κρεβάτι τη γυναίκα του καλύτερου φίλου του και να να περιμαζέψει το γιο του αλώβητο  από μια καλοκαιρινή κατασκήνωση…σιγά που θα άφηνε το γιόκα του βορά στα χέρια της προδοτικής εθνοφρουράς.

Το πρόβλημα είναι ότι η ταινία ξεμένει από βενζίνη αμέσως μετά το 45άλεπτο,βλέπεται αλλά δεν είναι το μακελειό του πρώτου μισαώρου.

Τέλος πάντων,η παρούσα ταινία δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο από ένα ταξίδι στο μαλακό υπογάστριο της ζώνης της Βίβλου  , στα κατώτερα ένστικτα του Ρεπουμπλικανού ψηφοφόρου.Μια ψυχροπολεμική φαντασίωση.Τα κλισέ που τη μαστίζουν την καθιστούν ακόμη πιο διασκεδαστική,αν φυσικά δεν ενοχλείστε από την αισθητική του ψυχρού πολέμου και την αντι – κομμουνιστική υστερία που ήταν στην ημερήσια διάταξη σε πολλές ταινίες δράσης της δεκαετίας του `80 .

In some remote and unpopulated area of Russia, a nuclear war head is detonated. Naturally, the US gets blamed for this, and Ruskies are burning for blood. Media attention sparks the decline of American civilization, and people almost immediately start rioting. Our hero Tillman gets the news while he’s grilling, and immediately decides to ride a bulldozer into town to get his strong box from the local bank. Lt. Youngman, played by Gortner, plays a self-important motorcycle riding hoodlum who also happens to be a higher up in the National Guard. Now, hilariously, all the cops and the troops in this movie are played by creepy long hairs, hippies, and bikers, all of whom take advantage of the situation. These counter culture scum have infiltrated every facet of local government and have been waiting for just such an opportunity to pounce. THIS COULD ALL HAPPEN, MAN! BEWARE!

This is a lesson for liberal men who are not members of the National Rifle Association.A movie that’s the living proof that it doesn’t matter if you are an accomplished doctor,you are as good as dead if you don’t conform to your bossy trigger-happy survivalist buddy’s directives.He’ll then steal your wife and you’ll end up dead,deceived & stabbed by a couple of vagrants(an inspiration for the natural born killers’ couple maybe?)

Anyway,joking aside,the first half of the movie rocks hard.It’s a sleazy affair,dipped in the exploitation serum.Jack Tillman is the survivalist.You bet…He can fire several types of firearms,he can operate a helicopter,he can throw knives like a ninja and he’s a great lay as well.What else could you expect? Steve Railsback is the perfect incarnation of the “survivalist” his performance is solid in its Charles Bronsonesque plagiarism.You know your deal here:Tightened jaws,cold eyes,cold blooded heart and the will to survive,no matter what.The fact that his wife & daughter are killed is nothing but a triviality.Like the Alpha-male he is,he manages to bed his best friend’s wife and to pick his son up from a summer camp.Thus his bloodline continues…

Problem is that the movie runs out of steam right after the 45 min. mark,it’s watchable but doesn’t live up to the exploitation mayhem that the first half of the flick is.

Anyway this is nothing else than a trip to the soft underbelly of the bible belt,to the lower instincts of the über-Republican voter.A nuclear war fantasy of the sleaziest kind.A cliche-ridden yet entertaining affair,if you aren’t offended by the cold war aesthetics and the anti-commie agenda that lots of action movies utilized back in the 80ies.
