What a lamentable piece of tosh!

Let me set the record straight!I’ve seen tons of Z-grade movies,flicks that could turn an artsy fartsy pretentious cinephile’s hair into white in just a matter of miliseconds.I also happen to adore lots of arthouse films,works of prestigious directors like:Dreyer,Bergman,Pasolini and the list can go on forever…

It’s one thing that I cannot really stomach… films that don’t bear a sense of purpose!I stress out that the there can be plenty of motives behind the creation of a film :Cashing-in,sincere artistic expression,shock value,provocation …you literally name it.

This is the problem with the majority of the Reteitalia productions,these,for the most part,abominable films lack substance and a serious artistic statement to back them.It’s just poor work made with hired directors and to add insult to injury ,the cunning Italians managed to sell those pieces of junk to the international video market.

It’s obvious that the Lamberto Bava/Dardano Sacchetti team didn’t know what they were doing on this one .The plot is nonexistent and all we get to see is some brainless teenagers aimlessly wandering around some catacombs,which are by the way very well constructed.Other than that we have to put up with 85 minutes of disgustingly cheap jump scares ,pedestrian dialogue and some of the lowest common denominator horror spoof ever shot.The ending is simply one of the most ridiculous one I’ve ever encountered and beggars belief.

I’ve seen Reteitalia stuff that was going through the motions but was nonetheless pretty well shot and directed,I recall stuff like:Casa dell’Orco,House of clocks,Ghosthouse that falls into that category but Graveyard disturbance is a trainwreck of a movie.  This mess simply cannot be salvaged…

Μέγιστος τεκές και χαβαλές χαμηλοτάτης υποστάθμης από το Λαμπέρτο Μπάβα.

Στο παρόν ο σκηνοθέτης του Demons μεταξύ άλλων τα κάνει θάλασσα και μας υποχρεώνει να αντιμετωπίσουμε μιάμιση ώρα με τα πιο βλακώδη κλισέ των ταινιών τρόπου, αποδομώντας ταυτόχρονα ο,τι αγαπά κανείς σε αυτού του είδους τις ταινίες.Επαναλαμβάνω,το ζήτημα δεν είναι οτι αυτή εδώ η σαχλαμάρα είναι κακή ταινία,διότι μια κακή ταινία όπως έχουμε αναλύσει σε αυτό το blog μπορεί να έχει άλλου είδους αρετές…διάολε, το 90% των ταινιών του Τζες Φράνκο μπορεί άνετα χαρακτηριστεί ως κακό.Το θέμα με ταινίες σαν αυτή είναι οτι δημιουργούν στρεβλή εικόνα για το σινεμά τρόμου και αναπαράγουν την εσφαλμένη θεώρηση οτι οι ταινίες τρόμου είναι καλλιτεχνικά υποπροιόντα. Ναι,αυτό εδώ είναι υποπροιόν , το Tenebre όμως φερ’ειπείν απέχει παρασάγγας από αυτόν τον όρο. Το χειρότερο σε όλην αυτήν την ιστορία είναι οτι κάτι τέτοιες σαχλαμάρες κατάφεραν και πουλήθηκαν στην αγορά του Βίντεο,όχι που δε θα τα κατάφερναν τα τσακάλια οι Ιταλοί.

Με ανύπαρκτη ιστορία,βλακώδες acting,εγκεφαλικά ανάπηρη κατάληξη,η ταινία αυτή κάνει τις ταινίες(λέμε τώρα)του Andreas Schnaas να δείχνουν σχεδόν ενδιαφέρουσες.

Motel Hell

Motel Hell(1980)

Farmer Vincent kidnaps unsuspecting travellers and is burying them in his garden. Unfortunately for his victims, they are not dead. He feeds his victims to prepare them for his roadside stand. His motto is: It takes all kinds of critters…to make Farmer Vincents fritters.

Meat is meat and man’s gotta eat…

This is a very motto-friendly movie,moving like a merrier version of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” ,”Motel Hell” unwinds another story of flipped out hillbillies ,ready to reach outmost extremes in order to protect the family secret…In this case it is smoked meat that is really the proverbial elephant in the room.

Motel Hell is really enjoyable for what it is,namely a horror/black comedy spoof with a great performance by Calhoun.This flick is immersed in hicksploitation stereotypes but it can absolutely get away with it,there is also some gore involved ,especially during the last reels of the film and in general it’s a very entertaining affair.

“Motel Hell” is cream of the crop comedy/horror spoof and I personaly find it on par with similar flicks like “Texas Chainsaw massacre 2”.If you want some morbid fun you are in for a 90-minute ride of splendidly gruesome humour.

Δεν έχω και πολλά να πω για το”Μοτέλ “η κόλαση” .Είναι από τις περιπτώσεις που ενώ μια ταινία πληροί τις κατάλληλες προδιαγραφές και διεκπεραιώνει τον αρχικό της σκοπό, δεν προσφέρεται για ενδελεχείς αναλύσεις και βαθυστόχαστους προβληματισμούς.

Άν θέλετε να περάσετε 90 απολαυστικά λεπτά βλέποντας μια κωμωδία τρόμου με υπόσταση και με λογική πίσω από τη δημιουργία της.τότε μάλλον βρήκατε την κατάλληλη ταινία.

Το gore είναι συμπαθητικό,οι ερμηνείες αξιοπρεπέστατες και η ιστορία είναι διασκεδαστική,αν και θυμίζει αντίστοιχες ταινίες όπως το “Blood diner”,ενώ γενικά η όλη λογική του φίλμ θα θυμίσει στους φάνς και  αντίστοιχες δουλειές του Tobe Hooper.Το τελευταίο σχόλιο μπορεί να αιτιολογηθεί από τη redneck καταγωγή και στάση ζωής των βασικών ηρώων της ταινίας.Φυσικά οι rednecks αποτελούν πολύ προσφιλή κινηματογραφική φυλή του γράφοντος και σχεδόν πάντα δικαιώνουν τις απαιτήσεις της πλοκής,είτε μιλάμε για το “deliverance” είτε για το “Texas Chainsaw massacre”.

Tελικά κατάφερα να πω παραπάνω από όσα αρχικά σκόπευα…

Καλή σας διασκέδαση…

 

 

Le porte del silenzio

Door into silence (1991)

Successful businessman Melvin Dovereux is caught in a traffic jam caused by a funeral procession. Soon he is haunted by visions of a hearse chasing him and a woman in a sports car. Could the funeral procession actuly be for him?

Quite of an oddball in Fulci’s filmography “Door into silence” was sadly meant to be the great,late maestro’s last movie.Shot on location in Louisianna the particular film shows potential but lacks substance and in the end doesn’t really justify its 90 minute duration.

Don’t get me wrong,the premise is very interesting ,John Savage as Melvin Devereux is very adequate and Sandi Schultz is blessed with a captivating,predatory aura but the recurring theme of seeing one’s own funeral or roughly put,trying to escape dying could at least be given more substance.Some moments tend to drag ,while some other moments radiate with suspense,style and gusto in the great Fulci way.

The film is a Filmirage production but looks way better than your average Filmirage affair.The cinematography is great and moody and the imposing Louisianna location provides some authenticity to the proceedings .

Verdict:The film can be seen as a partly successful experiment in creating some decent cinema with a small cast,an interesting storyline on a great location.The fat could definitely be trimmed but so be it.Fulci had done way worse in the mid to late 80ies and this humble psychological drama/thriller is on par with “Voci dal profondo”

Με αυτό το ταπεινό και αγνοημένο ψυχολογικό δράμα/θρίλερ έπεσε η αυλαία για το μαίτρ του Ιταλικού τρόμου Λούτσιο Φούλτσι.

Εύπορος μεσίτης παρευρίσκεται σε κηδεία προσφιλούς του προσώπου και κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού της επιστροφής στοιχειώνεται από τα οράματα του δικού του επερχόμενου τέλους.

Λίγο road movie,περισσότερο ψυχολογικό θρίλερ,καθόλου αιματηρό,το “La porte del silenzio” παραγωγή της filmirage ούσα, μαστίζεται από τα παρελκόμενα του χαμηλού προυπολογισμού αλλά δείχνει στυλιστικά και φιλμικά ανώτερο από άλλες παραγωγές της εταιρείας.Προφανώς ο Φούλτσι πόνταρε στην ταινία θέλοντας να κομίσει κάτι διαφορετικό.Σε σημεία δείχνει να ξεπερνάει άλλες του ταινίες της τελευταίας περιόδου,πλήν προβλήματα ρυθμού ενίοτε προκύπτουν.Είναι στιγμές που τα 90 λεπτά του φίλμ φαντάζουν υπερβολικά,είναι όμως άλλες στιγμές που η επιθυμία του Ιταλού σκηνοθέτη για κάτι διαφορετικό από τα συνήθη του standards αποτυπώνεται με μαεστρία στα καρέ του φίλμ.

Προσωπικά θα τοποθετούσα την ταινία κάπου μεταξύ του “devil’s honey” και του “voices from beyond”.Ταινίες ταπεινών καταβολών που όμως βρίθουν ειλικρίνειας.Σίγουρα βαραίνει συναισθηματικά το γεγονός οτι επρόκειτο τελικά για την τελευταία ταινία του Φούλτσι,πλήν το παρόν είναι ασυζητητί τουλάχιστον αξιοπρεπές.

Ιδιαίτερη μνεία πρέπει να αποδοθεί στο πειστικότατο και ατμοσφαιρικότατο location,όπως και στη στέρεα ερμηνεία του John Savage.

Οι αληθινοί φανς του μεγάλου Ιταλού και όχι αυτοί που αρέσκονται αποκλειστικά στις πιο αιματοβαμμένες δουλειές του θα βρούν σίγουρα πράγματα που θα τους ενδιαφέρουν στο παρόν.

 

 

Crimes of the black cat(1972)

A mysterious killer is murdering fashion models by using a black cat whose claws are dipped in curare. A composer, whose girlfriend was the first one to be killed, overhears a conversation by someone he believes may be the killer, but there’s one complication–the composer is blind and couldn’t see the suspected murderer.

Interesting and very entertaining Giallo entry by Sergio Pastore.”Crimes of the black cat” is hardly what one could call an original film as it moves along the very familiar lines of adulterous affairs,psychosis,treachery,hatred for all things beautiful … you name it,plus the fashion house setting rings some obvious Bava-related bells… but Pastore’s movie is blessed by hyperbole,bad acting ,some atrocious zoom-ins and  some implausible murders commited by a black cat indeed,hence the whole affair is catapulted in the echelon of the more important gialli.

Additionally,kudos should be given to Pastore for building up tension and climaxing with a very gruesome and graphic bathtub murder in the good old “Psycho” vein.The conclusion defies logic as always ,but it’s a Seventies Giallo,what should you expect?

The Copenhagen setting is quite original but not a decisive factor for the success of the movie.There is also lots of nudity and a pretty swinging rock score to be cherished.

Undoubtedly ,this movie should be watched by all Giallo buffs.Regardless of being an unoriginal film,Pastore’s affair is a very satisfying entry in the Giallo world.

Διασκεδαστικότατο σκουπιδο-τζάλλο διανθισμένο με  απάνθρωπα ζουμαρίσματα,μαύρες γάτες,όμορφες υπάρξεις,έναν πειστικό “τυφλό” ερευνητή-μουσικοσυνθέτη στο πρόσωπο του Άντονυ Στέφεν ,διασκεδαστικότατα red herrings,παραδοσιακά κακό acting και άπειρα δάνεια από άλλες διασημότερες ταινίες όπως “Cat o’nine tails” και “Blood & black lace”.

Φυσικά και δεν ανακαλύπτει την Αμερική ο Παστόρε σ’αυτό το ταινιάκι (το οποίο αποτελεί ακόμα διακαή  vhs πόθο του γράφοντος  ) αλλά το μεροκάματο το βγάζει επάξια και παρά τις αδυναμίες τη ροής ,η ταινία αποκτά ολοένα και περισσότερη σάρκα και οστά με κάθε λεπτό που περνάει.

Η κλιμάκωση,υποβοηθούμενη από μια αιματηρότατη, ξυραφιαστή σκηνή δολοφονίας σε μπανιέρα και από το υπέρ-ridiculous  συμπέρασμα που φέρνει μνήμες από το τελειωμένο σκουπίδι “killer work-out” αποτελειώνει αυτό που ξεκίνησε ο Παστόρε.Ο δολοφόνος είναι αρκετά προφανής  και τα twists τραβηγμένα από τα μαλλιά,αλλά όλα αυτά συντελούν στο πανέμορφο σκουπιδο-appeal της ταινίας και έπειτα είναι η γάτα,αχ αυτή η γάτα…
