Midnight blue(1979) aka “La domenica del diavolo”

“Midnight blue” is a rather bland and uninspiring entry in the revenge movie/sexpoitation subgenre.Unfortunately the movie seems to drag endlessly and offers way too little to keep the viewer satisfied. There are few redeeming moments, for example the nihilistic and genuinely chilling final sequence of the film, but the rest of the good scenes are few and far between and I had to resist the temptation of hitting the fast forward button in numerous occasions.
This tedious affair also suffers from a pedestrian direction, courtesy of the hack-director Raimondo Del Balzo and the obscure cast does nothing more than delivering substandard performances.
The plot takes place in a seaside resort in Italy where three female athletes enjoy a few days off their training routine.Soon they will be approached by three not so innocent looking males and all together they will end up having some fun in the family vila of one of the athletes.Little do the girls know about the real identity of their escorts. The men are proved to be convicts that have escaped from a nearby prison.Soon all hell breaks loose, but the end brings us another suitably yet predictably grim female revenge story.
If only the problem was the lack of originality in this film…
In fact the movie mostly suffers from lack of intensity. It seems that the production team and the director opted for a more melodramatic and less exploitative tone here, but the final result is a half-hearted and watered exercise in sexploitation. There is nudity of course, but the female members of the cast are far from captivating. The villains are also uninteresting, and moments of genuine menacing rage a la Dave Hess are sorely missed from this one.
To make a long story short. This is addressed to the die-hard eurotrash fans exclusively. The rest of the cinema fans who have a more “platonic” relationship with exploitation and genre cinema will find “midnight blue” boring and unappealing.
