Incredible early Giallo entry by the great, late Lucio Fulci. The film, on top of all other factors (pun fully intended!) is benefited by the very stylish cinematography of the vibrant sixties San Francisco area and features a masterful mechanical screenplay by Lucio himself.

An unscrupulous doctor is accused of killing his asthmatic wife as part of an insurance scam, despite discovering that she has a doppelgänger who works as a high-class stripper. He and his mistress are trying to figure out if the stripper and the deceased wife are somehow connected. The story starts unravelling as soon as the police is asked to shed some light in the mystery.

A perfect marriage of style and substance , a Hitchcockian tale of betrayal , with a love triangle and then some. Fulci’s storyline on “Una sull’ altra” offers more than meets the eye and the series of twists during the last reel of the film as we reach climax are destined to leave a lasting mark to the viewer.

The breathtaking Marisa Mell, in all her glory, is the perfect vehicle for Fulci to indulge in a voyeuristic sort of film making , by making use of each and every trope of this psychedelic age of cinema. Undoubtedly this is a very well made and beautiful film. The narrative starts building up rather slowly but the second and third part of the film are well-oiled and offer great suspenseful moments Jean Sorel turns from a playboy to a defeated man overnight and Elsa Martinelli offers a different sort of stoic eroticism. The villain of Alberto de Mendoza is not overly strong but still utilitarian. To make things even juicier ,the director himself appears in a cameo role in the most gruesome moment of the film ,in true Fulci fashion.

This is top shelf cinema by Fulci.

Εξαιρετικό Χιτσκοκικό Τζιαλλο από τον Λούτσιο Φουλτσι . Ανεξάρτητα από το εαν η πλοκή θυμίζει το Vertigo . Ο Φούλτσι τερμάτισε δημιουργικά με το παρόν τη μηχανική δομή του σεναρίου του και σκαρφίστηκε μερικές ανεπανάληπτες ανατροπές ,για τις οποίες και ο ίδιος όπως ομολογούσε, ήταν περήφανος.

Τεντυμπόης και Δον Ζουάν Γιατρός ονόματι Τζωρτζ Ντουμουριε βλέπει τη γυναίκα του να πεθαίνει με ύποπτο τρόπο στην ίδια του την κλινική . Μια ασφάλεια ζωής 1.000.000 αξίας Δολαρίων και μια εκρηκτική Στρίπερ που μοιάζει εκπληκτικά στη μακαρίτισσα του βάζουν ψύλλους στα αυτιά και προσπαθεί μαζί με την ερωμένη του να αποδείξει πως δεν είναι ελέφαντας. Ο σχεδόν ηττημένος Τζωρτζ θα οδηγηθεί στην πτέρυγα θανατοποινιτών του Σαν Κουέντιν ,αλλά η ιστορία δεν έχει τελειώσει ακόμα.

Το παρόν σενάριο βρίθει αφηγηματικών ευρημάτων και το σπουδαίο φιλμάρισμα του Φούλτσι κάνει μια ταινία που έχει από μόνη της τις προδιαγραφές να ξεχωρίσει , ακόμα αρτιότερη. Η ματιά του σκηνοθέτη στο παρόν είναι ηδονοβλεπτική εκεί που πρέπει και απόλυτα ραφιναρισμένη. Το τζαζ σκορ του Ριζ Ορτολάνι είναι καταπληκτικό και οι ερμηνείες των ηθοποιών κυμαίνονται από συγκρατημένες ως απόλυτα πειστικές.

Το παρόν είναι Eurocult να το πιείς στο ποτήρι. Άσπρο πάτο λοιπόν!

A stylish Giallo coup de grâce by Umberto Lenzi, unfortunately hampered by a rather by-the-numbers storyline and a weak lead, in this case Antonio Sabato. Still this nice piece of vintage spaghetti mystery thriller delivers the goods and manages to satisfy the avid Eurocult fan.

A serial killer is on the loose, murdering certain women around the city. While travelling on a train on his honeymoon, Mario (Antonio Sabato) sees his wife brutally attacked aboard the train and after the killer gets away, the police accuse Mario of attacking his newlywed wife. The Police decide to hide the fact that Giulia (Uschi Glas), Mario’s wife is alive in order to protect her from the killer. Mario sets out to prove his innocence by attempting to solve the “Puzzle of the Silver Half Moons”

This film would pretty much justify the price of admission on the grounds of the first reel, Rosella Falk’s masterfully executed “bathtub” scene and then Marisa Mell’s gruesome murder .Other than that is a rather hit’ n ‘ miss affair characterized by a great cinematography and mise en scene . Truth be told Umberto Lenzi was responsible for a string of pretty successful Gialli but towards the 1970s, he began focusing his attention on poliziotteschi films and his contributions to making Gialli began to deteriorate. Other than that the score by Riz Ortolani is to die for.

Anyway Giallo fans should definitely  check this one out.

όμορφος τζιάλλο σινεμάς από το μαιτρ του κινηματογράφου είδους Ουμπερτο Λένζι.

Ο μέγας Ουμπέρτο φιλμαρει μερακλίδικα μια δυστυχώς μπαναλ ιστορία μυστηρίου που εμπλέκει έναν νεκρό Αμερικανό και εφτά γυναίκες,αλλά το τελικό αποτέλεσμα μάλλον δικαιώνει τους οπαδούς του Ιταλικού στυλιζαρισμένου pulp  θρίλερ.

Oι αρχική σεκάνς, η μουσική του Ριζ Ορτολάνι και μερικές αριστουργηματικά καμωμένες βίαιες σκηνές ,κάνουν το πικρό ποτήρι της άνευρης ερμηνείας του Αντόνιο Σαμπάτο και της αδιάφορης αφήγησης λίγο πιο υποφερτό.

Οι φανς του σκηνοθέτη και του Ευρωπαικού καλτ κινηματογράφου καλά θα κάνουν να τσεκάρουν όπως και να έχει.

Ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου Ιταλικά rip-off Σατανιστικού τρόμου.Ο Carpi ανακάτεψε στοιχεία από το “Οmen” το “Rosemary’s baby” και λίγο από “The exorcist” για την “ποικιλία” του πράγματος και μας άφησε ένα πόνημα που είναι τουλάχιστον απολαυστικό.

Mια γυναίκα(Heywood)πρώην μέλος σατανιστικής αίρεσης καταλαμβάνεται από τρόμο όταν αντιλαμβάνεται οτι η έφηβη κόρη της(Wendel)έχει αναπτύξει έντονο ενδιαφέρον για το απόκρυφο.Σύντομα η κορασίδα βάζει τα γυαλιά σε όλες τις γυναίκες πρώην μέλη της αίρεσης με τις υπερφυσικές τις δυνάμεις,ενω στο μεσοδιάστημα βασανίζει έναν nerdy συμμαθητή της.Η μητέρα της φτάνει στο σημείο να πιστεψει οτι η κόρη της μπορεί να είναι στην πραγματικότητα κόρη του ίδιου του Σατανά.

Η ταινία γενικά δεν έχει γκελ στο κοινό του exploitation αλλά ο γράφων τα “σπάει”.Το σενάριο είναι  χωνευτήρι τόσο πολλώνπραγμάτων,οι ερμηνείες από το τιτανομέγιστο κάστ,εκτός της νεαρής Lara Wendel που βγάζει όντως κάτι το διαβολικό, τόσο τραγελαφικές και η πλοκή τόσο ασύνδετη με την καλή έννοια,που θα μπορούσε να πιστέψει κανείς οτι η ταινία είναι έργο του Fulci.Προσωπικά το θεωρώ πιο εξωφρενικό από το επίσης “μεγάλο” φίλμ του Alberto De Martino “The antichrist” και αυτό μόνο καλό μπορεί να θεωρηθεί.

Ο Carpi στήνει μερικές εξαιρετικές σκηνές ανθολογίας(γυμνή σκηνή πάλης μεταξύ μάνας-κόρης,μερικές cheesy σκηνές τελετών,μεταξύ άλλων)και γενικά τα πάει περίφημα.Η φωτογραφία είναι αρκετά καλή απ’όσο μπορώ να κρίνω απ’το Ελληνικό  letterboxed VHS και το soundtrack του Stelvio Cipriani είναι υπέροχο.

Γενικά αν είστε φάνς του Ιταλικού horror/exploitation δεν υπάρχει κανένας λόγος να μην σας αρέσει το “Ring of darkness”.Φυσικά η ταινία απευθύνεται αποκλειστικά σε αυτούς που είναι εξοικειωμένοι με τους κώδικες του χώρου,οι υπόλοιποι θα την καννιβαλίσουν με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες.Εnjoy…

A hilarious yet incredibly entertaining supernatural/satanist horror Italian sleazefest that makes more “refined” Italian “The exorcist” rip-offs like “The Antichrist” or “Chi Sei” look pale in comparison.

If you are the kind of viewer that digs gratuitous nudity,disjointed story telling, a plot that is a melting pot of several things from other movies and general over-the-topness,then this movie is for you.

A former satanist-cult female member believes that her daughter has superficial powers and that she is the antichrist in the flesh,the offspring of lucifer.Well,she has a good reason for believing such things as her daughter seems to possess(pun intended)the chops of a dozen  warlocks and she is a warped and evil spoiled brat through and through,she even enjoys torturing a nerdy schoolmate of hers.

Anyway,Carpi offers a very entertaining film here.It might be a tad incoherent(in a Fulciesque “The Beyond” vein)but it really delivers in terms of tackiness and cheesiness   and is  incredibly fun to watch.The performances except for Wendel, who’s darn convincing as the warped and evil youngster,are sub par.Mell is wasted in a small and dull part.Papas role is also brief and uninteresting.As far as Anne Heywood is concerned,I was never fond of her acting abilities.In “Ring of darkness” she is as irritating as she was in “The killer is on the phone”,but I guess two lead parts in Italian b-movies are not representative of her qualities.Additional kudos go to the great Stelvio Cipriani score.

To sum this up.Movies like this one are why people like me got hooked with the eurocult B-movie culture for life.Italian trash afficionados will have a guaranteed blast.The rest will never have a chance anyway.

Ενα πολύ καλό φίλμ,υβρίδιο παλιού καλού θρίλερ μυστηρίου/giallo ισπανικής παραγωγής με τη θεά Marisa Mell στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο ήταν ο λόγος που ξενύχτησα πάλι χτές το βράδυ.

Ο βαθύπλουτος χήρος επιχειρηματίας Alexander(Richard Conte) αντιμετωπίζει τεράστιο πρόβλημα με το γιό του Mark(Juan Ribo).O νεαρός μετά την απώλεια της μητέρας του αντιμετωπίζει έντονα ψυχολογικά προβλήματα τα οποία εκδηλώνονται με εντονα επεισόδια μανίας.Ο πατέρας λειτουργεί ιδιαίτερα ανθρώπινα και παιδαγωγικά(sic) κλείνοντας το γιό του σε ένα ειδικά διαμορφωμένο κελί .Τις ώρες που δεν είναι έγκλειστος ο Mark παίζει με τις ώρες πιάνο και ασχολείται με τα πολυαγαπημένα αντικείμενα της μητέρας του.Η ιδιάζουσα αυτή κατάσταση πέφτει στη αντίληψη της Elisabeth(Marisa Mell)επαγγελματία απατεώνα ,η οποία έρχεται σε επαφή με το γηραιό μεγιστάνα,συστήνεται ως Gina ,ψυχολόγος στο επάγγελμα,και προσφέρεται να βοηθήσει το γιό του.Αυτό που φυσικά σχεδιάζει είναι να απομυζήσει την περιουσία του.Ο γιός του Alexander δεν δείχνει να εντυπωσιάζεται ιδιαίτερα από την πρώτη επαφή αλλά στη συνέχεια πατέρας και γιός πέφτουν στα πατώματα για τα ωραία μάτια και οχι μόνο της Μell.Aνατροπή σημειώνεται όταν εμφανίσεται από το πουθενά ο Richard(Anthony Steffen),πρώην σύζυγος της Elisabeth και εκβιάζει την πρώην σύζυγό του διεκδικώντας κομμάτι από τη λεία.Εν συνεχεία τα γεγονότα εκτυλίσσονται γρήγορα και οι ανατροπές στην ιστορία είναι συνεχείς.Το τέλος έρχεται και είναι πραγματικά ευφυές,αφήνοντας το θεατή έκπληκτο.

Εν αρχήν ήν το κάστ,το οποίο είναι πανίσχυρο και δικαίως κερδίζει από την αρχή τις εντυπώσεις.Η Mell δικαιολογημένα κλέβει την παράσταση αφού πέρα από εμφάνιση διέθετε και υποκριτικά προσόντα.Η Gina/Elisabeth της Mell είναι μια γυναίκα αράχνη που αργά αλλά σταθερά υφαίνει τον ιστό της και καταβροχθίζει τα θύματά της.Από κοντά ακολουθεί ο Conte,o οποίος αποδίδει με πυγμή το ρόλο του εγωπαθή,κτητικού και δεσποτικού πλουσίου.Οι υπόλοιποι του κάστ ακολουθούν αποδίδοντας πειστικά τα μέρη τους.

Το σενάριο είναι δουλεμένο στις λεπτομέρειες,ο ρυθμός της ταινίας είναι σε γενικές γραμμές αργός αλλά επιβλητικός και κρατάει το ενδιαφέρον του θεατή αμείωτο .Γενικά όλες οι αρετές του giallo(προδοσία,πλεκτάνες,αδίστακτοι και σκιώδεις πρωταγωνιστές)συνυπάρχουν αρμονικά σε τούτο εδώ το ταινιάκι.

Οι οπαδοί του παλιομοδίτικου καλογραμμένου θρίλερ θα περάσουν 90 απολαυστικά λεπτά.Οι οπαδοί της Marisa Mell  θα βρούν μια αρκετά σπάνια ταινία στη φιλμογραφία της πενέμορφης αυστριακής με τα γατίσια χαρακτηριστικά και το άδοξο τέλος ενώ τέλος οι φάνς του eurocult θα προσθέσουν άλλο ενα διαμαντάκι στη συλλογή τους.Οι μόνοι που ίσως μείνουν παραπονεμένοι είναι οι οπαδοί του gore,οι οποίοι καλά θα κάνουν να ψάξουν αλλού αφού στο παρόν οι ποσότητες του κόκκινου υγρού που χύνονται είναι μάλλον μικρές.

A very gritty and creepy spanish mystery thriller with a great Marisa Mell performance  is the reason I slept at dawn once again.

A con artist (Mell) tries to snatch some of  the wealthy businessman’s  Alexander(Conte) riches but things become a little too complicated and threatening .When  the end arrives the aura of menace is still lingering in my living room.

The story might not  be original at all yet it is extremely well-written without any gaping plot holes and the tiny details that construct the puzzle are very charming as far as I’m concerned.Mell delivers a great performance in the role of the unscrupulous woman that will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.Conte is also great as the possessive and egotistical tycoon Alexander.Anthony Stephen plays the scumbag,ex-husband of Mell’s character that pops out of nowhere to claim his share of the loot,and he is also great.Stephen mostly played gentle characters as far as I can recall(the night Evelyn came out of the grave is the obvious exception)and his part in the “diary of an erotic murderess” was very entertaining.

Technically this is executed with competence but will appear as a slow picture to some.This seems to be fully intentional,as the plot is unveiled slowly but very steadily and it is crammed with little details.

Overall,a very good picture that will keep you nailed on your seat.This one is practically bloodless but there’s a lot of subtle violence and an atmosphere of  ruthlessness to keep the giallo fans satisfied.Recommended.
