Silly Canadian feline horror anthology in the vein of Amicus studio similar productions that stays entertaining mostly because of its implausible proceedings and far-fetched narrative rather than actually being a successful gothic horror anthology in the British tradition.

Wilbur Gray, a horror writer, has stumbled upon a terrible secret, that cats are supernatural creatures who really call the shots.He visits Frank Richards,a publisher, so he can get his book published. This book Gray has written is about cats. Cats watching everyone and controlling everything,cats being literally the Devil in disguise. He mentions the stories in the book are all true, and gives three examples. The first involves the murder of a cat-loving old woman who gives her entire fortune in her will to her cats. Not everyone is happy about it, but would have to get past the cats to get the the will. The second story is a tale of black magic between a cat and two girls and the third story is a tale of murderous revenge… by a cat.

With a storyline of such a tongue n’cheek nature it would be almost impossible for someone to take this one seriously,however the cast is of all-star quality and the first vignette,which is the most Gothic horror/Amicus style plagiarizing one, is rather well-written,promptly acted and can actually look pretty menacing at certain moments.Vignettes number two & three start in a promising manner but degrade to almost slapstick buffoonery towards their climaxing moments.

It’s not the first time when our feline friends are granted superficial powers.All in all ,murdering cats make good storylines… so if you are a friend of feline horror nonsense step in and enjoy…

Γάτες,πολλές γάτες και ακόμα περισσότερες γάτες μαζεύτηκαν σήμερα στο μπλογκ.

Πιστός στο ρητό οτι “δεν έχουν οι άνθρωποι γάτες,αλλά οι γάτες  ανθρώπους” ο Πήτερ Κάσινγκ ως αλαφροίσκιωτος συγγραφέας αποφεύγει τα μαλλιαρά θηλαστικά σαν ο διάολος το λιβάνι,καθώς τους αποδίδει υπερφυσικές,σχεδόν δαιμονικές ικανότητες,έχει γράψει μάλιστα και βιβλίο σχετικά με τη θεωρία του.Στο πόνημά του καταγράφει τρία περιστατικά δολοφονιών με πρωταγωνιστές….καλά καταλάβατε…γάτες.

Καναδική ανθολογία τρόμου ή μάλλον καναδική συμπαθητική μπούρδα με καστ Α’Εθνικής που πασχίζει να αντιγράψει με επιτυχία τις αντίστοιχες παραγωγές της Amicus,αλλά σκοντάφτει πάνω σε σωρούς από αγνό και ανόθευτο Τρας και κατά συνέπεια υποβαθμίζεται σε ένοχη απόλαυση.

Είναι τόσο τραβηγμένα από τα μαλλιά αυτά που πραγματεύεται η ταινία που ακόμα και οι πλήρως συνειδητοποιημένοι φανς του υπερφυσικού θα μειδιάσουν,θα καγχάσουν και ενίοτε θα ανατιναχτούν με αυτά που αντικρίζουν τα πολύπαθα ματάκια τους.

Προκρίνεται λόγω τρασιάς πάντως…

Count Dracula’s great love

El gran amor del Conde Dracula (1973)

Four women spend the night in an old deserted sanitarium on a mountain. They each in turn fall into the the evil hands of a doctor who forces them to suck each others blood and to whip innocent village virgins so they can lick the oozing cuts clean.Doctor Wendell Marlow (Paul Naschy) is the titular count who is in dire need of a virgin that will grant him eternal love/life and will help him resurrect his deceased daughter. Dracula seeks the rebirth of his daughter Radna, and in order to bring about that resurrection, Dracula must complete a blood ritual and convince the virgin Karen to voluntarily join him as his immortal bride forever in eternal darkness.Her unwillingness to be his bride will make him suffer the terrible consequences of his cursed existence.

Πωλ Νασυ με τουιστ του Βαμπιρικού μύθου έχουμε εδώ.Ο Ισπανός τιτάνας του κινηματογράφου του φανταστικού τα πάει περίφημα ως Κόντες Δράκουλας και η στρατιά από Ευρωπαίες καλλονές που τον πλαισιώνει κάνει τη νύχτα μας ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρουσα.

Κατά τα άλλα έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια υπέροχα αδιαπέραστη Σέβεντιζ γκοθ αισθητική που περνά στον αμφιβληστροειδή μας μέσω της όμορφης φωτογραφίας,ενώ το περιβάλλον του  bunker κάτω από το Parque del Capricho στη Μαδρίτη αποδεικνύεται “Λίρα εκατό” για την αισθητική του όλου εγχειρήματος.

Γενικά το φιλμ βλέπεται νεράκι,χωρίς ιδιαίτερες τροχοπέδες, οι οποίες θα έθεταν σε κίνδυνο το ρυθμό του και τη γραμμική  αφηγηματική λογική του.Το σενάριο είναι απλό και οι όποιες απορίες σχετικά με την προιστορία του σανατορίου και του τωρινού ιδιοκτήτη λύνονται με λειτουργικά expositions στο ξεκίνημα του φιλμ.

Η βία παρουσιάζεται με τρόπο που δεν επισκιάζει την ατμόσφαιρα και ενώ η ταινία πατάει στη Βρετανική παράδωση της Hammer films ,φρονώ πως προσθέτει με τη σειρά της ένα μπριόζικο Σπανιόλικο λιθαράκι στη Σάγκα του αιμοδιψή απέθαντου Κόμη.

Nice Gothic horror-Vampire romp with Paul Naschy starring and writing the script plus a whole array of buxom Eurobabes accompanying the man,the myth ,the Hombre Lobo, who herein presents a nice little twist of the Vampiric Saga.

Drenched in unmistakable Seventies Gothic atmosphere “Count Dracula’s great Love” has all the blood,the atmosphere and the sensuality you’ll ever need from such a film,it is also briskly paced,beautifully filmed and never drags itself too much or loses time on trivialities.

A gorefest it is not,but a beautiful Eurohorror it is.The abundance of creepy moments,the great location of the bunker under Parque del Capricho in Madrid and the uncoventional climax are also bonuses.  Naschy’s vehicle is hand’s down a mandatory acquisition for the numerous fans of the great,late Spanish B-movie titan.

 

Brain Damage

Brain Damage (1988)

One morning,Brian, a young man wakes to find that a small, disgusting phallus-sized creature called Aylmer has attached itself to the base of his brain stem.It appears that Aylmer is a really cheerful little fellow that is hundreds of years old and has been owned by a variety of hosts throughout the course of human history. The creature gives Brian a euphoric state of happiness by injecting a fluorescent blue liquid into his brain but demands the brains of human victims in return.The quest for potential victims that will keep Aylmer fed   turns into a tour of circa-1980s underground NYC clubs, backlots, and other seedy locations.

Διασκεδαστικό όσο δεν πάει και δραματουργικά/αφηγηματικά έτη φωτός ανώτερο από άλλες ταινίες του είδους το “Έκρηξη Εγκεφάλου” είναι μια μπιμουβάδικη καταγγελία ενάντια στη μάστιγα των ναρκωτικών και τολμώ να πω πως εκτυλίσσεται κάπως σαν ένα Τρας “Ρέκβιεμ για ένα όνειρο”.

Πριν πέσετε να με φάτε ,ο παραλληλισμός μου έχει να κάνει περισσότερο με το αφηγηματικό στύλ της ταινίας ταφόπλακας του Αρονόφσκι και όχι με την ποιότητά της,αφού η ταινία του Χενενλότερ (Basket Case) είναι απροκάλυπτα και ανενδοίαστα Τρας και καλτ κινηματογράφος,υψηλού βεληνεκούς, θα προσθέσω εγώ.

Η ονείρωξη του “πρεζάκια” Μπράιαν που μετατρέπεται σε αδυναμία να λειτουργήσει, τα προβλήματα και η καταστροφή της σχέσης του με την κοπέλα που αγαπά,η διάβρωση της σχέσης του με τον αδερφό του,η τρέλα, η παντελής έλλειψη ηθικών φραγμών και ο άκρατος κυνισμός του μικροσκοπικού θεούλη Έηλμερ καταγράφονται από το φακό του Χενενλότερ αριστουργηματικά και συντελούν στη δημιουργία ενός εξαιρετικού τεμαχίου, στο οποίο συνυπάρχουν αρμονικά το σπληνάντερο και οι πιο αλέγκρες στιγμές.

Αριστούργημα…

A B-movie j’accuse by Frank Henenlotter of Basket case fame, a movie that is clearly an entertaining exercise in condemning the use of drugs but never becomes overly moralistic and always stays entertaining in a trashy manner.”Brain Damage” is  impeccable  cult cinema at its best and a mandatory addition to someone’s collection.

Despite its humorous timbre Brain Damage can also be very unsettling at times and also offers decent amounts of gore and sleaze to keep all the B-movie Zealots satisfied.

The way the narrative unwinds is excellent and the downfall of young Brian is sometimes quite graphic.The performances by the cast are also convincing.Despite the budget limitations Henenlotter’s movie looks great and never feels like an “unfinished” or hackneyed product. This film is in all ways a complete work and should be viewed by all fans of trash cinema.

 

Cheerleader Camp

Cheerleader Camp(1988) aka “Bloody Pom Poms”

Ταπεινό στις προθέσεις του,διεκπεραιωτικό στη λογική του, το “Μαζορέτες υποψήφιες για φόνο”΄,το trailer του οποίου πρέπει να έχει “ανοίξει” καμιά δεκαριά φορές τις βιντεοπροβολές μου(ΕΛΛΑΣ ΚΟΣΜΟΣ ΒΙΝΤΕΟ για πάντα), δεν καμώθηκε ποτέ το πρωτοκλασάτο Σλάσερ, δεν ισχυρίστηκε ποτέ ότι είναι “Prom Night”,διάολε δεν είναι ούτε καν “Sleepaway Camp 2”,παρόλα αυτά  πρόκειται για έναν συμπαθητικό χαβαλέ που παίρνει το αυθεντικό “Sleepaway Camp” του βάζει στα χεράκια πομ-πομ, του αφαιρεί το δυσοίωνο στοιχείο και βασίζεται υπέρ το δέον στη γυμνή σάρκα και στο γυμνασιακό χαβαλέ.

Το ζήτημα είναι το εξής…λειτουργεί η ταινία?

Ας μη γελιόμαστε,το παρόν αγκομαχώντας μεν περνά τη βάση δε. Αυτό οφείλεται περισσότερο στο νευρώδες δεύτερο μισό και στο αναπάντεχα καλό και creepy finale παρά στη συνολική ποιότητα του φιλμ .Η πλειονότητα του θηλυκού καστ απλά περιφέρει την καλλονή του και αναλώνεται σε κοινοτοπίες , τις οποίες όμως ξεστομίζει με υποφερτό τρόπο.Δηλαδή τι παραπάνω περιμένατε από playmates και από soon-to-be πορνοστάρ (Teri Weigel)? Οι άντρες του καστ προσφέρουν και αυτοί με τη σειρά τους ερμηνείες τυπικές για το είδος και κρύα αστεία με το κιλό.Η σκηνοθεσία είναι λειτουργική και η αιματοχυσία σποραδική αλλά πειστική.

Έλα όμως που αυτό το συνονθύλευμα από κλισέ κάνει την ώρα να περνά ευχάριστα…

Για να συνοψίσουμε.Το παρόν απευθύνεται σε εθισμένους στη Σλασερ θεματική ζηλωτές του trash κινηματογράφου και δεν πρόκειται επ’ουδενί να αλλάξει την οπτική σας επί του είδους.

Bloody pom poms follows the adventures of a group of teenage girls who go away to Camp hurrah, a cheerleader camp for the summer.There the girls will have to face tough competition weird male caretakers and to hone their craft for the annual Cheerleader queen contest.The camp’s principal Ms.Tipton is also quite a character. Alison, one of the group, is having nightmares. Brent, her boyfriend, has followed her to the camp but really seems more interested in the other girls. When those girls are found murdered, Alison believes she may be the killer.

By-numbers Slasher entry that stays entertaining mostly due to the muscular second half where all the bloodshed ensues and its twisted (sic) twist ending.

The storyline is nothing to write home about ,plus it relies too much on juvenile humour, and comedic moments for its own bad,however ,this movie doesn’t pretend that it’s anything else than a derivative of the teen slasher genre. What it lacks in originality and grit (see “Sleepaway Camp for pointers”) it delivers in spades in nudity and tongue n’cheek moments  .

The gore is hit n’ miss ,but there are at least two well constructed scenes that deliver the gory goods.The performances by the cast are slightly above average though…

All in all, the particular film will not change your perception of what a good Slasher film is ,but despite being of modest origins and average quality it gets the job done…
