Well-crafted Cannibal/action entry by Margheriti that remains vigorous and sort of disturbing forty years after its original release. against all odds

Mentally unstable Vietnam vets who were held captive by the Vietcong come back to America after being rescued carrying a dangerous virus that turns people into cannibals when bitten.

The notion that cannibalism is a virus and that socially marginalized Vietnam veterans, that are destined to relive the horrors of the war are bound to develop sociopathic tendencies one way or another remains effective throughout the duration of the film ,even if some details of the script are heavy-handed , dare I say problematic. But ,oh well ,it’s an Italian cannibal exploitation flick from the 80ies , what can you do?

John Saxon didn’t see the whole cannibal thing coming and was less than impressed while on set.

” At one point we were shooting a scene and a guy brings in this tray of meat. I asked what it was for and they explained to me it was supposed to be body parts, even genitals, and we were supposed to gnaw on them. I asked Margheriti to take me out of the scene and I went to my hotel room. Once I found out what the true nature of the film was I got so depressed.”

However the seasoned professional Saxon was ,buckled up and delivered a performance that was no less than very effective, especially during his meltdown ,in the film ending. Radice is his beloved bad boy appropriation/impersonation. The rest of the cast is strictly utilitarian. The Atlanta setting adds a nice flair to the film as well.

Surprisingly this has grown older in a quite charming way in contrast to Cannibal Ferox f.e.

Αστικός Κανιβαλοσαματάς από τον Αντόνιο Μαργκερίτι, ο οποίος φλερτάρει εδώ με τον κοινωνικό σχολιασμό ,τον οποίον θα απογείωνε στο υπερέπος last Hunter, με τον David Warbeck , σε ένα ρόλο που έμοιαζε κομμένος και ραμμένος για τον Τζων Σαξον. Τι κρίμα που ο Σάξον δεν εκτίμησε ιδιαίτερα τα σπληνάντερα του cannibal apocalypse και προδομένος ,τρόπον τινά, δεν συνέχισε τη συνεργασία του με τον Ιταλό πρωτομάστορα του Τρας.

Το Στόρυ: Γκρουπ βετεράνων παρουσιάζουν περίεργα συμπτώματα αρκετό καιρό μετά την επιστροφή τους στην πατρίδα και καννιβαλίζουν μερικούς ανύποπτους συμπολίτες τους. Η επιστήμη υποθέτει αλλά επι της ουσίας δεν μπορεί να βοηθήσει. Η αστυνομία μπλέκεται και τα χειρότερα έρχονται.

Διαθέτει σκηνές ανθολογίας, αρκετό τεχνικό βάθος και συμπαθητικές ερμηνείες παρά τις σεναριακές απιθανότητες. Το αστικό περιβάλλον δίνει επίσης πόντους. Το φιλμ σε τελική ανάλυση γέρασε καλύτερα από άλλα αντίστοιχα και αποτελεί ακόμα ασφαλή επιλογή για τους φανς του Eurotrash.

Oh yeah, the Seventies… The era when a Female star like Ursula Andress (of James Bond fame) would star in an exploitation film next to renowned actors like Stacy Keach and exploitation regulars like Claudio Cassinelli and Tony Marsina (Rolf) alike. The analogy is having Julia Roberts starring in a cannibal jungle action film. Only directors like Tarantino and Rodriguez have managed to cross-polinate genre and mainstream cinema to a certain extent.

This film was directed  by Sergio Martino and produced by his brother Luciano and is admittedly one of the more prestigious cannibal affairs. There are some parallels drawn between this one and Ruggero Deodato’s “Last Cannibal World” but let’s say Deodato’s flick offered more grue and went straighter for the jugular than this one.

Susan Stevenson (Andress) and her brother Arthur (Marsina) get off a plane in Papua New Guinea, looking for her missing husband. They team up with, Dr. Edward Foster(Keach). The three head into the jungle, get in more than a few fights amongst themselves, and view lots of gratuitous animal cruelty, notable an iguana getting eviscerated.

The film was shot on location in Sri Lanka and despite being as slick as a cannibal action film could get , The mountain of the cannibal god didn’t struck a chord with the critics. However this film sub-genre thrived on controversy and became a “poster child” of exploitation cinema, thus gaining cult status.

As far as cinematic merits are concerned, let’s face it… these films haven’t aged all that well, but  can still offer authenticity in terms of location and tons of sleaze. Sergio Martino’s film making was suited other film genres better. For example,his crime and giallo entries were of superb quality. Regarding Cannibal action/horror , this one plays like a second rate Deodato. Martino’s work has more pristine standards than Lenzi’s but is not on par with the demented style of mad Ruggero.

Anyway,the mountain of the Cannibal god is deservedly cult and a mandatory acquisition for exploitation fans.

Το Βουνό των Κανιβάλων φαντάζει ως μέγα παράδοξο ακόμα και για την εποχή του. Γυρισμένο στη Σρι Λάνκα, προ εμφυλίου και με ένα καστ το οποίο περισσότερο θα περίμενε κανείς να δει σε ένα mainstream φιλμ της εποχής παρά σε μια περιπέτεια με Κανίβαλους. Η αναλογία έχει ως εξής… φανταστείτε τη Τζούλιαν Μουρ ως πρωταγωνίστρια σε σημερινό κανιβαλοέπος, οι μόνοι που θα μπορούσαν να ενώσουν τους κόσμους του mainstream και του exploitation  είναι οι Ταραντίνο και Ροντρίγκεζ και αυτοί σε κάποιο βαθμό.

Τέλος πάντων, η ταινία του Σερτζιο Μαρτίνο πραγματεύεται την ιστορία συζύγου καθηγητή ,η οποία οργανώνει αποστολή στη ζούγκλα προκειμένου να εντοπίσει τον αγνοούμενο σύζυγο της. Σύντροφοι της σε αυτήν την περιπέτεια ,ο αδερφός της και άλλος ένας καθηγητής. Το γκρουπ επιδεικνύει τυχοδιωκτική συμπεριφορά και μοιραία προξενεί την οργή των τοπικών φυλών οι οποίοι αιχμαλωτίζουν τους λευκούς και τους κρατούν δέσμιους…

Το φιλμ του Μαρτίνο πασπαλίζει το cannibal action με όσο γκλίτερ γίνεται, απουσιάζει από το παρόν η σληζιά των ταινιών του Λένζι, αλλά ο Μαρτίνο παραμένει σοβαρός παίκτης προσφέροντας μια ταινία είδους , εξαιρετικά στιβαρή .

Το καστ τραβάει τα βλέμματα και η κινηματογράφηση από τον  Giancarlo Ferrando  πείθει παρά τις “τουριστικές” της προεκτάσεις. Παρ’όλα αυτά τα φιλμ αυτού του είδους παρουσιάζουν ρυτίδες και θεωρώ πως αφορούν πλέον σχεδόν κατ’αποκλειστικότητα ανθρώπους εξοικειωμένους με το σινεμά είδους.

Οι φανς μάλλον το έχουν ήδη…

Semi classic trash opus penned by Fabrizio De Angelis and directed by Marino Girolami (Violent Rome). Zombie Holocaust manages to check all the boxes in terms of gory mayhem but has a ridiculous plot that beggars belief.

In New York City a hospital worker is found to have been devouring bodies in the morgue. Morgue assistant and anthropology expert Lori (Alexandra Delli Colli) discovers he was from the Asian Molucca islands where she grew up. Dr. Peter Chandler (Ian McCulloch) investigates, and he and Lori discover that similar corpse mutilations have occurred in other city hospitals, where immigrants from this region are working.Peter leads an expedition to the islands to investigate, where he liaises with Doctor Obrero (Donald O’Brien). Included are his assistant George, George’s eager journalist girlfriend Susan, Lori, local boatsman Molotto assigned by Obrero, and three guides. The crew are hunted by cannibals and zombies, the latter created by the sinister Doctor Obrero who is experimenting with corpses.Lori is accepted as queen of the cannibals, and sends them off against the mad scientist and his zombie army.

A largely nonsensical mishmash of the cannibal and zombie horror clichés with some mad scientist antics thrown in for the good measure, Zombie Holocaust is just another cynical attempt at copying far more well-known Spaghetti horrors in order to bring in more dough to the Italian Genre cinema tycoons.As it is stated in the Wikipedia article of the film “Following the success of Zombi 2 (1979) and Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977), producer Fabrizio De Angelis came up with the idea of cashing in on both films’ subjects at the same time. He reused the basic story of Zombi 2 and added elements of cannibal films to come up with Zombie Holocaust. The film depicted zombies and cannibals clashing on a south-east Asian island. The zombies of this film physically resemble those of Zombi 2 but they do not consume flesh, being more in line with the zombies from Haitian folklore. In this film, it is the island native people that hunt, kill, and consume humans.”

Judging from the humble origins of the film, one should expect a trainwreck of a film and for the most part the plot of the film is a tribute to everything inept, inane and disjointed. However all the downsides of this flick end at that point. As this film is by and large an extremely funny gorefest and a feast for the senses. The pace is relatively fast, the special effects are mostly adequate and the performances by the cast are amusingly bad, f.e sometimes Ian McCulloch seems puzzled . Producer De Angelis even went as far as to cast for this one McCulloch and the cult character actor Dakar that had taken part in Zombie Flesh Eaters.

End verdict: Zombie Holocaust owes more to and has more in common with trashfests like Andrea Bianchi’s Burial Ground than with the Lucio Fulci classic zombie opus “Zombie Flesh eaters” but it is relentless, very gory and amusing.

All in all, a mandatory addition for fans of Italian splatter.

Ιταλικός τρας κολοσσός με σενάριο που αψηφά οποιαδήποτε αφηγηματική λογική, με ερμηνείες που προσβάλλουν ακόμα και πρωτοετή δραματικής σχολής πλην όμως με σχετικά καταιγιστικό ρυθμό και ποταμούς αίματος το ολοκαύτωμα των Ζόμπι σκλαβώνει το μερακλή φίλο του Ιταλικού σπλατερ.

Το σκουπίδι του Τζιρόλαμι μπορεί να μην κομίζει αφηγηματικές αρετές και υποκριτικό βάθος ,αλλά έχει κανίβαλους, έχει Ζόμπι, έχει τρελό επιστήμονα, έχει κέφι, μπρίο και εν τέλει βγάζει τρελά γούστα.

Ο γράφων θεωρεί το πρώτο μέρος της ταινίας που εκτυλίσσεται στη Νέα Υόρκη και πραγματεύεται μυστηριώδεις αρπαγές μελών από πτώματα που λαμβάνουν χώρα σε τοπικό νεκροτομείο αρτιότερο αφηγηματικά. Όταν η δράση μεταφέρεται στη Νοτιοανατολική Ασία η μπάλα χάνεται οριστικά και ο θεατής απλά αφήνεται στο να παρακολουθεί μειδιώντας την αιματοχυσία. Ενδεικτικά η ιστορία περιλαμβάνει κανιβάλους που επιχειρούν στην ενδοχώρα και κατασπαράζουν τα μέλη της ερευνητικής αποστολής, ζόμπι που πετάγονται από το πουθενά τρομοκρατώντας τους Κανίβαλους και μια ατμόσφαιρα συνωμοσίας να πλανάται στην ατμόσφαιρα…όταν στην πλοκή εισέρχεται ο Δόκτωρ Ομπρέρο και οι αντισυμβατικές του ιατρικές μέθοδοι τότε ακούμε ατάκες ανθολογίας του στυλ “ The patient’s screaming disturbing me, performed removal of vocal chords.” Και δικαίως ανατιναζόμαστε.

Εν πάσει περιπτώσει ,ο θεατής που διασκεδάζει με μια ταινία σαν το Zombie Holocaust δεν περιμένει σαφώς να δει τι αρμονίες του Βερκμάιστερ, άρα η συζήτηση οφείλει να τελειώσει κάπου εδώ. Άν αρέσκεστε σε ιταλικά σκουπιδοσπλάτερ σαν το Nights of Terror, τότε το παρόν είναι για σας…

Ντελιριακή παρωδία τρόμου στο ύφος  των “Bad taste” ,”Braindead” του Peter Jackson και κυρίως του “Blood feast” του πατριάρχη του gore Herschel Gordon Lewis.

Δύο αδέρφια , ιδοκτήτες  υπερεπιτυχημένου χορτοφαγικού εστιατορίου,πιστοί μιας αρχαίας, τρομακτικής Αιγυπτιακής θεότητας,  προσπαθούν να  την αναστήσουν με τη βοήθεια του θείου τους,του οποίου το μυαλό και τα μάτια φυλάνε σαν κόρη οφθαλμού σε ένα βάζο γεμάτο με φορμόλη.Στην προσπάθειά τους να πετύχουν στην αποστολή τους,ξεπαστρεύουν κόσμο κα κοσμάκη και χρησιμοποιούν τα διαμελισμένα μέρη των θυμάτων τους στις γαστριμαργικές τους δημιουργίες

Παρά το γεγονός οτι ο γράφων δεν είναι οπαδός των κωμωδιών τρόμου,δεν μπορεί παρά να αναγνωρίσει οτι το “Blood diner” είναι πολύ καλό για αυτό που είναι.Η ταινία είναι πολύ καλοφτιαγμένη,περιέχει αρκετό gore για τους κάφρους και τρελό τζέρτζελο για τους χαβαλέδες ,το αν θα αρέσει και σε ποιους, εξαρτάται από το πως προτιμά ο καθένας τις ταινίες τρόμου.Αν ψάχνετε ταινίες να σας στοιχειώσουν τις νύχτες,τότε αποφύγετε το παρόν πάση θυσία.Αν  ενίοτε αισθάνεστε λίγο πιο ανάλαφροι ,τότε step in…

Εγω πάντως παρότι φαν των πιο ανατριχιαστικών φιλμικών εμπεριών,πέρασα καλά

Cool splatter/horror spoof by Jackie Kong.”Blood diner” feels like an unofficial sequel to Herschel Gordon Lewis’ “Blood Feast” and a frantic cinematic experience to say the least.

Two cannibals/health food diner owners are on a wacky quest to restore life to the five million year old goddess Shitaar. Aided by their uncle’s brain and eyeballs, the two set about getting the required parts – virgins, assorted body parts from whores, and the ingredients for a “blood buffet”. Their adversaries are the police: the chief with a Russian accent, the “player” detective, and the new Yorker with an Australian accent.

 

The movie feels very rich in props and budget .The gore is quite cool in a gratuitous, yet cartoonish way,sort of similar to Peter Jackson’s horror spoofs.Horror fans that like their flicks sillier than usual will have a ball.

As for me,not being a fan of horror comedies,I don’t think I’ll throw again anytime soon “Blood diner” into my VCR.I tend to enjoy more unintentional rather than intentional comedy in horror movies.

White Cannibal Queen(1980)

Αλί και τρισαλί,ιδού η πρώτη βιντεοκασέτα που αγόρασα ποτέ.Άλλος στη θέση μου μάλλον θα την είχε πετάξει στα σκουπίδια και θα είχε συνεχίσει τη ζωή του,αλλά οχι εγω…

Με τεράστιο αίσθημα ευθύνης και απόλυτη υπερηφάνια σας παρουσιάζω μια από τις χειρότερες ταινίες που έχω δει στη ζωή μου και φυσικά το χειρότερο(μαζί με το “Cannibal terror”)cannibal movie που έχει γυριστεί ποτέ.

Ένας άνδρας,ο Δόκτωρ Jeremy Taylor(Al”God upon men”Cliver) που έχασε το χέρι του και την οικογένειά του,πέφτοντας θύμα επίθεσης από μια φυλή κανιβάλων επιστρέφει  ως μέλος μιας αποστολής διάσωσης δέκα χρόνια αργότερα ,στον τόπο του εγκλήματος για να φέρει πίσω την  έφηβη πλέον κόρη  του.Αντικρίζοντας το βλαστάρι του διαπιστώνει ότι οχι μόνο μεγάλωσε, αλλά έγινε και μια όμορφη ξανθιά γυναίκα που έγινε βασίλισσα των κανιβάλων.

Από που να πρωτοξεκινήσω?Από τις άθλιες ερμηνείες του κάστ? Από το γεγονός οτι οι κανίβαλοι είναι Λευκοί με make-up που τους κάνει να μοιάζουν με μέλη των Kiss?Από την ανύπαρκτη σκηνοθεσία,την κάκιστη φωτογραφία-μοντάζ ή τις κωμικοτραγικές σκηνές κανιβαλισμού σε slow motion,στις οποίες κάποιος κριτικός έχει γράψει οτι βλέπει ένα arthouse πρίσμα.

Μπα,εγω δεν βλέπω τίποτα το artsy σε ένα extreme close-up ενος στόματος που μασάει κόκκινο λάστιχο με λίγο ketchup ,τραβηγμένο από κάτι που μοιάζει με ανοιγμένο στομάχι γυναίκας.Η ταινία είναι ένα σκουπίδι του κερατά,γυρισμένο καθαρά για να τσιμπήσει οτι μπορεί από την τότε επιτυχία των ταινιών με κανίβαλους.Καθαρό και ανερυθρίαστο καρα-low budget exploitation με όλη του τη σαπίλα όπως μόνο η Eurocine μπορούσε.They don’t make them like they used to…

Εκτός των άλλων,όπως έχει παραδεχτεί σε συνέντευξη του,ο Jess Franco μισούσε αυτού του είδους τις ταινίες για αυτό και γύρισε μόνο δύο τέτοια φίλμ.Δείτε το μόνο αν θέλετε να έχετε άποψη για όλες τις ταινίες με κανίβαλους…

Α serious candidate for the prize of the worst cannibal movie ever made(can be topped only by “Cannibal terror”),”White cannibal queen” is an abysmal affair and if someone sits through its entire duration,then he/she probably can claim with pride that he/she is a hardcore eurotrash fan.

Doctor Taylor, his wife Elizabeth and their teenage daughter Lana go to an isolated hospital in the Brazilean jungle, close to the Amazon river; they are attacked by savages and he sees them kill and eat his wife, and abduct the girl. Taylor manages to get back to civilization, but he needs psychiatric help; only Doctor Ana believes his story about cannibals, and takes the risk of going with him and a few rich people who can pay for a safari in the remote jungle. The cannibals decimate a number of the safari members in a succession of attacks, and only Taylor, the sexy lady doctor, and a photograph, rich the cannibal tribe – only to discover that she is now the wife of the tribe leader, and considered a goddess. The tribe has adopted her as a white goddess.

Shot on a shoestring budget,probably in a zoo somewhere in Spain, this one is exploitation per se.It’s very probable that the Eurocine exploitation deities in charge of the production,actually believed that this one could hit the box office like the Deodato and Lenzi movies,but how in the world could this ever be true?

This is not the case,I assure you.The movie is shot in a haste and it painfully shows.The cinematography and the editing is crude,so are the special effects.The cannibal scenes are directed in the Franco’s usual extreme close-up mannerism.As a result all the viewer can see is some fangs masticating on some red goo.Very cheap trick Senor Franco…

The barrage of ridiculousness is completed by the crappy cast performances and by the fact that the cannibals are nothing but white/caucasian people with face paint..

ONLY for hardcore eurocult and extremely bad cinema fans…

Σαδομαζοχιστικών προεκτάσεων για το γράφοντα, αφού είναι ανελέητα κακό,αλλά ταυτόχρονα φορέας κάποιων μεταφυσικών σχεδόν qualities,το συγκεκριμένο φίλμ είναι κάκιστο αλλά για αδιευκρίνιστο λόγο κρατάει το θεατή κολλημένο στη θέση του.

Ένας βετεράνος του Βιετνάμ κατευθύνεται προς ένα νησί που κατοικείται από ανθρωποφάγες φυλές προκειμένου να σώσει ένα απαχθέν μοντέλο, όχι μόνο από τους απαγωγείς της, αλλά και από τον δαιμονικό,γιγαντόσωμο,ανθρωποφάγο θεό που λατρεύουν οι ιθαγενείς.

Τι να πει κανείς και τι να γράψει για τη σχέση του μακαρίτη Franco με το cannibal horror genre…Προφανώς τον άφηνε παγερά αδιάφορο,εξ’ου και δεν υπέγραψε παρά μόνο δύο ταινίες του είδους,την περί ής ο λόγος και το φρικτό “Cannibals” της

ίδιας χρονιάς,ενω φημολογειται οτι δικιά του ταινία είναι και το “Cannibal terror” της παραγωγού εταιρίας των μεγάλων επιτυχιών Eurocine(όποιος ξέρει,ξέρει).Για να αναλύσουμε το παρόν.Είναι sleazy και exploitative όσο γίνεται,χωρίς όμως καμία καλλιτεχνική πρόφαση,χωρίς καμία αιδώ.Είναι προφανές οτι ο Franco δε δίνει δεκάρα για το υλικό του,η ταινία έχει από τις πιο άθλιες κακοφωτισμένες φωτογραφίες που έχω δει(συγκρίνω με αντιστοιχες ταινίες,οχι με το “Suspiria”),τρισάθλιο μοντάζ,διαλόγους προιόντα εγκεφαλικής βλάβης,γελοίες ερμηνείες από όλο το κάστ…ΑΛΛΑ διαθέτει την τύχη να έχει ένα snuff quality παρεμφερές με ταινίες όπως το “last house on dead end street”,ειδικά σε μερικές σκηνές ψυχεδελικού τρόμου που στήνει ο Franco,oι σεκάνς αυτές γυρισμένες μάλλον με fish eye lens αποκτούν πραγματικά μνημειακή αξία και είναι το μόνο πράγμα, μαζί με το θεικό tribal horror soundtrack ,που αξίζει να θυμάται κανείς από το φιλμ.

Ο κανίβαλλος θεός είναι υπερκούλ και μας χαζεύει όλους με τα μάτια μπάλλες του ping pong που του έχουν κολλήσει,ενω ο διαβολοκυνηγός Al Cliver είναι τρελό κομμάντο και δεν του το΄χα με τίποτα.Η Uschi Fellner είναι εκνευριστικά bimbο και αν ήμουν ο Franco θα είχε πέσει βορά στα νύχια του δίμετρου κανίβαλου από την αρχή της ταινίας.Τέλος οι απαγωγείς δίνουν ρεσιτάλ γελοιότητας όλοι ανεξαιρέτως(και ο Werner Pochath)και οι ατάκες που ξεστομίζονται απλά δεν περιγράφονται.

Η ταινία σε σημεία είναι πολύ αργή,είναι άτεχνη.αλλά με ένα-δυο ποτά,πολλή ανοχή και όντας γνώστες των ρυθμών και της γλώσσας του trash θα την παλέψετε.Για μένα αποτελεί ιστορικό παράδοξο,αφού αποτελεί μια από τις πρώτες βιντεοκασσέτες που αγόρασα και ενώ αναγνωρίζω το πόσο τραγική είναι μου ασκεί μια ακατανίκητη έλξη.Δείτε με δική σας ευθύνη…

Almost unbearable,technically crass,but at the same time charming.This poverty row cannibal exploitation affair beggars belief throughout its entire duration.

The story is set amongst jungle tribes that live in fear of the devil. Laura Crawford is a model who gets kidnapped by a gang of thugs whilst working in South America. They take her into the jungle and demand a huge ransom. Laura is guarded by some ridiculous looking native who calls himself “The Devil” and has to go through all manner of unpleasant situations until the gang gets their ransom. Chained maidens are offered in supplication and the devil demonstrates eating their nether regions in a grossly excessive literal manner. Enter Peter Weston, the devil hunter, who goes into the jungle in true Indiana Jones style to try and rescue her.

Jess Franco obviously didn’t care at all for the cannibal genre and he wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the genre.Little did he and the Lessoeur family(Eurocine)that this atrocious cannibal/exploitation/indiana jones/ransom romp would scar our brains for life.

The movie is one of the most inane creations in the entire cannibal and exploitation genres,it can be topped only by Jess Franco’s “Cannibals” and j.l.Tabernero’s “Cannibal Terror” and makes coarse “gems” like “Mangiati Vivi” look like “The Godfather” in comparison.The performances and the dialogues are some of the stupidest you’ll ever see and hear.The photography and editing defy any cinematic rules.To write that this movie is badly lit and photographed is obviously an understatement,as the director of photography in this one,probably didn’t even try to photograph the film at all,he just shot it,got paid and walked.However there are some sequences shot with a psychedelic effect(fish-eye lens?)that radiate of Franco’s eye for visual brilliance.The psychedelic and tribal horror soundtrack is particularly effective as well.

To sum up.This one is extremely hard to sit through,but  has a few redeeming qualities.I’ll leave it up to you to decide if you’re strong enough to bear it.The majority of the fans think that this is an unwatchable turkey though.The choice is yours…
