Well-crafted Cannibal/action entry by Margheriti that remains vigorous and sort of disturbing forty years after its original release. against all odds

Mentally unstable Vietnam vets who were held captive by the Vietcong come back to America after being rescued carrying a dangerous virus that turns people into cannibals when bitten.

The notion that cannibalism is a virus and that socially marginalized Vietnam veterans, that are destined to relive the horrors of the war are bound to develop sociopathic tendencies one way or another remains effective throughout the duration of the film ,even if some details of the script are heavy-handed , dare I say problematic. But ,oh well ,it’s an Italian cannibal exploitation flick from the 80ies , what can you do?

John Saxon didn’t see the whole cannibal thing coming and was less than impressed while on set.

” At one point we were shooting a scene and a guy brings in this tray of meat. I asked what it was for and they explained to me it was supposed to be body parts, even genitals, and we were supposed to gnaw on them. I asked Margheriti to take me out of the scene and I went to my hotel room. Once I found out what the true nature of the film was I got so depressed.”

However the seasoned professional Saxon was ,buckled up and delivered a performance that was no less than very effective, especially during his meltdown ,in the film ending. Radice is his beloved bad boy appropriation/impersonation. The rest of the cast is strictly utilitarian. The Atlanta setting adds a nice flair to the film as well.

Surprisingly this has grown older in a quite charming way in contrast to Cannibal Ferox f.e.

Αστικός Κανιβαλοσαματάς από τον Αντόνιο Μαργκερίτι, ο οποίος φλερτάρει εδώ με τον κοινωνικό σχολιασμό ,τον οποίον θα απογείωνε στο υπερέπος last Hunter, με τον David Warbeck , σε ένα ρόλο που έμοιαζε κομμένος και ραμμένος για τον Τζων Σαξον. Τι κρίμα που ο Σάξον δεν εκτίμησε ιδιαίτερα τα σπληνάντερα του cannibal apocalypse και προδομένος ,τρόπον τινά, δεν συνέχισε τη συνεργασία του με τον Ιταλό πρωτομάστορα του Τρας.

Το Στόρυ: Γκρουπ βετεράνων παρουσιάζουν περίεργα συμπτώματα αρκετό καιρό μετά την επιστροφή τους στην πατρίδα και καννιβαλίζουν μερικούς ανύποπτους συμπολίτες τους. Η επιστήμη υποθέτει αλλά επι της ουσίας δεν μπορεί να βοηθήσει. Η αστυνομία μπλέκεται και τα χειρότερα έρχονται.

Διαθέτει σκηνές ανθολογίας, αρκετό τεχνικό βάθος και συμπαθητικές ερμηνείες παρά τις σεναριακές απιθανότητες. Το αστικό περιβάλλον δίνει επίσης πόντους. Το φιλμ σε τελική ανάλυση γέρασε καλύτερα από άλλα αντίστοιχα και αποτελεί ακόμα ασφαλή επιλογή για τους φανς του Eurotrash.

Γερασμένο buddy movie με εσανς από τους “Ντιουκς του Χάζαρντ” , το “Καρ Κρας- οι ατσίδες με τα κόκκινα” αποδεικνύεται άχρωμο και άοσμο.

Ο Νικ και ο Πολ, παθιασμένοι με τους αυτοκινητιστικούς αγώνες κάνουν θραύση στις διάφορες πίστες με το καινούριο αυτοκίνητό τους. Από οικονομική ανάγκη όμως δέχονται να “ρίξουν” τον επόμενο αγώνα ώστε να κερδίσει ένα στοίχημα ο Μαφιόζος Βρόνσκι. Από δω και πέρα όμως αρχίζουν οι περιπέτειές τους.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της προβολής καθίσταται προφανές οτι αυτό το family friendly ταινιάκι δράσης -λέμε τώρα…Ιταλικό είναι παιδιά, το σενάριο περιέχει χοντράδες και τυπικά σεξιστικά αστεία σε “σπασμένα” Αγγλικά- δεν είναι ένα τερέν όπου ο τιτάνας Μαργκερίτι μπορεί να ξεδιπλώσει 100% το πολύπλευρο ταλέντο του.

Δυστυχώς η ταινία κυλάει σχετικά αδιάφορα και αφήνει επίγευση ξεθυμασμένου αναψυκτικού,κάτι το οποίο εντείνεται από τις επίπεδες και εκνευριστικά κακές στα όρια του γελοίου ,ερμηνείες του καστ.

Για Ιταλολάγνους και αρχειοθέτες αποκλειστικά…

More of a shipwreck and less of a “carcrash” ,this Margheritti affair is a boring and dated buddy movie and lacks the grit and over-the-topness that could at least keep the Italophiles interested.

Paul, an ace driver and Nick, a wizard of mechanics, form a perfect team of auto racers. By winning a rigged race and he had to leave victory to a rider of a team in the pay of a mobster named Wronsky, our friends are forced to temporarily erase circuits; to escape the wrath of Wronsky.

This 1981 Italian-Spanish-Mexican action film directed by Antonio Margheriti  is unfortunately one of the lesser works of the late,great Italian craftsman and seems as if it was conceived and executed solely for the paycheck. This flick is very tedious and meanders endlessly without a significant climax. I’m sorry to say.

Some characteristic model work,a trademark of Margheritti’s approach to action film making can be seen as mildly interesting,but other than that this movie blatantly fails to maintain the viewer’s attention.

Workmanlike  jungle actioner by the genre veteran Antonio Margheritti. While “Jungle Raiders” is by no means a groundbreaking affair,it is nonetheless an entertaining jungle adventure romp that features genre regulars and entertains with its campiness.

Malaysia 1938. Captain Yankee and his friend Gin Fizz make a living by selling dreams to rich foreigners. With the help of some natives they let their clients think to have lived fantastic adventures. One day Maria Cortez, a Columbian museum director, arrives to search for a fabulous ruby and Captain Yankee is blackmailed by Warren into accepting the task. It won’t be easy.

As stated ,Margheritti didn’t discover the wheel with this one.There are other movies from his Philppines period that are far more accomplished and effective (“The last hunter’ comes to mind).In spite of the fact that “Jungle Raiders” is plagued by a relatively uninteresting middle part ,the opening and the ending reels are a riot and make up effortlessly for the boring parts of the film.How did this come to fruition? Easy…with lots of explosions,a talking pet cobra (no kidding!) , a couple of hilarious villainous characters,like the malay arch-pirate Tiger and last but not least with some atrocious English dubbing a la Italiana.

In coclusion,mission is once again accomplished. Fans of Euroaction have nothing to lose.

Καρφί από τη Φιλιππινέζικη περίοδο του Μαργκερίτι , μια περίοδο κατά την οποία ο μεγάλος Ιταλός,μαέστρος των ανατινάξεων μας πρόσφερε ταινίες όπως : Tiger Joe,  Hunters of the Golden Cobra , Ark of the Sun God  και το υπερέπος The last Hunter ,έρχεται το Jungle Raiders το οποίο παρά τις ταπεινές του καταβολές και προθέσεις διασκεδάζει και προσφέρει μερικές σεκάνς παροιμιώδους Ιταλικής σκουπιδουπερβολής.

Άν κάποιος θέλει να δει μια Ιταλική αντιγραφή του Raiders of the lost Ark με τους βετεράνους Μπιμουβάδες Κρίστοφερ Κόννελυ και Λη Βαν Κληφ να παίζουν μπαλίτσα δεν έχει να χάσει τίποτα.Τουναντίον, το δημιούργημα του Μαργκερίτι προσφέρει κατοικίδια Κόμπρα που διαθέτει ευφυία λαγωνικού ,παράγει ήχους που προσομοιάζουν σε ομιλία και στο τέλος τη βρίσκει και με θηλυκή κόμπρα που συναντά μέσα στην όλη αναμπουμπούλα.Θέλετε κι άλλα? Βεβαίως. Καταρχήν ο συνδυασμός του συγκεκριμένου σκηνοθέτη με το φιλμικό είδος της περιπέτειας γεννά πάντα εκρήξεις…μα πολλές εκρήξεις . Ο Μαργκερίτι ανατινάζει μοντέλα κτιρίων,βάρκες,καλύβες και ανθρώπους μεταξύ άλλων και προσφέρει νοσταλγική ανεμελιά με έναν κινηματογράφο ,ο οποίος είναι πια νεκρή γλώσσα.Τέλος η Αγγλική ηχητική μπάντα του παρόντος είναι έργο τέχνης από μόνη της και απογειώνει ή καταβαραθρώνει την ταινία αναλόγως με την πλευρά στην οποία βρίσκεται ο μέσος θεατής. Αν θεωρείτε το Αγγλικό dubbing αυτού του είδους ταινιών φαιδρό,τότε το παρόν σίγουρα θα σας δώσει επιπλέον επιχειρήματα …

Παρ’όλα αυτά η ταινία δεν είναι επ’ουδενί το καλύτερο action του Ιταλού σκηνοθέτη και αφορά μόνο τους σκληροπυρηνικούς οπαδούς του Euroaction . Οι λοιποί κρατήστε τις πρέπουσες αποστάσεις ασφαλείας.
