A chauffeuer and a maid of a wealthy couple aided by International criminal Jacmel attempt to kidnap the couples sickly child. Their plan comes unstuck when, a deadly Black Mamba sent by mistake instead of a harmless snake, escapes, and both the kidnappers and several hostages (the boy’s grandfather and a toxicologist who came to warn them about the mamba) are trapped in the boy’s London home. A tense evening is had by all as the snake creeps around the house picking off the various characters one by one.
Well-constructed and gritty hostage thriller made in UK is the name of the game here. Tobe Hooper was originally attached to direct but quit because of “creative differences”, and Piers Haggard replaced him.Haggard went above and beyond the call of duty to make the Black Mamba scenes as realistic as possible,they even used a real black mamba for several of the shots and especially the first reel is a masterfully executed exercise in nail-biting tension. While this is not exactly “The house on the edge of the park” in terms of nastiness, it is however quite a sleazy affair, in particular the gung ho moments of Oliver Reed and the genuine creepiness of Kinski are to be commented.Kinski in particular,chose to do this film instead of Raiders of the Lost Ark because the salary was higher. In his autobiography, Kinski Uncut, he also stated that the script for the Spielberg movie was “moronically shitty”
The climax is also quite satisfactory and not haphazardly constructed as in other similar films. All in all , a very rewarding experience if the viewer is accustomed to such old-school cinematic gems.

Διεθνής σπείρα απαγωγέων βάζει στο στόχαστρό της ασθενικό γόνο μεγαλοαστικής οικογένειας αγνοώντας πως μέσα στην οικεία του αγοριού περιφέρεται ένα θανάσιμο μαύρο μάμπα. Τα πράγματα αρχίζουν να ξεφεύγουν όταν το φίδι δαγκώνει την καμαριέρα του σπιτιού που αποτελεί μέλος της σπείρας. Ο βασανιστικός της θάνατος εξωθεί τους εγκληματίες στα άκρα, ενώ η αστυνομία πολιορκεί το σπίτι.
Ο θρύλος λέει πως ο εχθρός όλων των σκηνοθετών Κλάους Κίνσκι εξώθησε τον αρχικό σκηνοθέτη Τομπι Χούπερ σε άτακτον φυγήν και πως ο προαναφερθείς Κίνσκι επέλεξε να συμμετάσχει στο “Χτύπημα του φιδιού” απορρίπτοντας το Raiders of the Lost Ark του Στήβεν Σπήλμπεργκ ,θεωρώντας το σενάριο του Δεύτερου βλακώδες.
Άβυσσος η ψυχή του Κίνσκι ,πλην εδώ τα πηγαίνει αρκετά καλά κάνοντας παρ’όλα αυτά τα άκρως απαραίτητα. Εύφημος μνεία και στον Όλιβερ Ρηντ ο οποίος μας προσέφερε στιγμές απείρου κάλλους μεταφέροντας στο πανί την σύγχυσή του για την τρισάθλια του χημεία με τον προαναφερθέντα Γερμανοπολωνό ηθοποιό, δε θα ήταν υπερβολή να πούμε πως ο Ρηντ με την μανιασμένη του ερμηνεία κλέβει την παράσταση εδώ.
Σε τεχνικό επίπεδο,το φιλμ ακολουθεί αμερικάνικα αφηγηματικά μονοπάτια, η σκηνοθεσία είναι αποτελεσματική και δημιουργεί κλειστοφοβική ατμόσφαιρα και ένταση,αξιοποιώντας στο έπακρο την παρουσία ενός πραγματικού “μαύρου μάμπα” στο σετ…
Η δε κλιμάκωση έρχεται στο ιδανικό σημείο και είναι απόλυτα λειτουργική για τη σεναριακή οικονομία του φιλμ.
Όμορφη ταινία,συστήνεται ανεπιφύλακτα…
