Αρχετυπικό campy actioner από δύο ανθρώπους που συνέδεσαν το όνομά τους με τη φθηνή,απενοχοποιημένη-ένοχη διασκέδαση.Φυσικά μιλάμε για το Dave A.Prior στη σκηνοθεσία και τον Ted Prior στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο.Το “Deadly Prey” αποτέλεσε την πρώτη παραγωγή της trash-o-μάνας ΑΙΡ,ιδιοκτησίας Peter Yuval,μια ματιά στο blog θα σας δώσει να καταλάβετε τι αντιπροσωπεύει το προαναφερθέν κινηματογραφικό στούντιο για τη B-Movie κουλτούρα.

Το “Deadly Prey” πραγματεύεται την ιστορία του Mike Danton,πρώην βετεράνου του Βιετνάμ,ο οποίος απάγεται από σπείρα μισθοφόρων και ρίχνεται σε ένα δάσος στα περίχωρα του Los Angeles,ως θήραμα για τους εκπαιδευόμενους μισθοφόρους.Όταν ο Danton,υπόδειγμα στρατιώτη-πολεμιστή κάνει το δάσος οικόπεδο ξεπαστρεύοντας όλους τους υποψήφιους μισθοφόρους,ο λοχαγός Hogan,πρώην εκπαιδευτής του Danton,απαγάγει και βιάζει τη γυναίκα του.Κόλαση!!!Η τελική έκβαση του εγχειρήματος θα κάνει το Hogan εύχεται να μην  είχε (ξανα)μπλέξει με το Danton,αφού οι κυνηγοί μετατρέπονται σε θηράματα και το τέλος είναι αποκαλυπτικό.

Trash πανόραμα.Δεν υπάρχει σκηνή που να μην επιφυλάσσει ένα μικρής μορφής εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο για τους μύστες του είδους.Το σενάριο,οι ερμηνείες και η σκηνοθεσία εκτοξεύουν το “Deadly Prey” στο στάτους του κλασικού. Νευρώδες action χωρίς φρου-φρου και αρώματα που αψηφά τις ρυτίδες του χρόνου.

Ο Μike Danton είναι μια υπερβατική action μορφάρα,με την οποία,λίγο πολύ,ταυτίστηκε όλη η καριέρα του Ted Prior,αλλά νομίζω πως ο ίδιος διασκεδάζει με αυτήν την εξέλιξη,αλλιώς δε θα συμμετείχε στο sequel του παρόντος με τίτλο “Deadliest Prey” που κυκλοφόρησε προ ολίγων μηνών.Οι δε λοιποί του κάστ είναι απολαυστικά κακοί,ειδικά ο trash ήρωας Fritz Matthews και ο David Campbell είναι μούρλια.Σκηνοθετικά,ο Dave A.Prior δεν ήταν ποτέ ο ψαρωτικός ή ο τεχνίτης σκηνοθέτης,συνεπώς αν το action είναι για σας  κάτι σαν τα πρώιμα φίλμ του John Woo,κοιτάξτε αλλού.Παρ’όλα αυτά με τόσο υλικό και με τέτοιο σενάριο δεν θα μπορούσε κανείς σκηνοθέτης να πυροβολήσει τον εαυτό του στα πόδια…

Απ’όλα τα παραπάνω γίνεται αντιληπτό οτι το παρόν φίλμ είναι must για τους απανταχού trashers…

Probably the most iconic AIP production,”Deadly Prey” is undoubtedly the most fruitful collaboration of the Prior brothers.Still a Rambo:First Blood rip-off made in a zero budget “Deadly Prey” is a juicy,trashy actioner that glows as a timeless gem.A true King resting upon his noble throne.Pardon my poetic inclinations and my second grade allegories but where else have you seen a fight scene featuring a man hitting another with the latter man’s severed arm.Priceless…

And this is only the tip of the Iceberg…

The plot:Colonel Hogan rents his mercenaries out to anyone with the right price. This time it’s businessman Michaelson. A deal is struck, and Hogan recruits new troops. For training, he orders his troops to kidnap innocent people, take them to the forest and hunt them. Unfortunately this time, they picked the wrong guy, Mike Danton. Danton, a Vietnam veteran, is ambushed while taking out the trash. Taken to the forest, he is stripped to his shorts, greased up and told to run. The mercenaries hunt Danton, but are meticulously picked off one by one. The troops report this to Colonel Hogan, who sends a task force with his best man, Lieutenant Thornton. One of this elite combat unit is Jack Cooper. Cooper and Danton realize who each other are while trying to kill each other. Cooper has not seen Danton since he took a bullet for him in ‘Nam. With his new-found friend, Danton continues to punish the mercenaries, and get back to his wife Jaimey. Like all good villains, Hogan uses Danton’s family against him, but this angers Danton. After storming the military training camp Danton arms himself up, and destroys all traces of Hogan’s mercenaries.

Other than the hilarious and highly implausible plot,it’s the actors’ performances that are over the top and make this flick a true classic of the action genre.Fritz Matthews and David Campbell are extremely villainous villains and Cameron Mitchell,well he delivers a trashy performance as Prior’s father in law.

Then you have Ted Prior as Mike Danton.Mike friggin’ Danton…the ultimate soldier.The guy who makes Rambo look like a wimp.Seriously the sight of the mullet headed Prior barefoot,wearing nothing else than a pair of denim shorts chasing and blasting an entire army of pathetic mercenaries into oblivion will make each and every fan of “serious” cinema cringe as for us,the village idiots,we probably found another true action hero worthy of worship.In terms of acting,Prior is an extremely adequate action lead.He has the chops and the looks to support his part 100%.

Anyway,I think you got my point.This film is one of the campiest,most inane and most hilarious,hence good ,action flicks in the story of the genre.Since I don’t want to spoil the fun of it,I won’t disclose the plethora of highlights lurking in the reels of this one(I’ve already given away the severed arm fight)

A true B-movie classic.Bow down before Mike Danton!
