The Kindred

The Kindred (1987)

Directed by: Stephen Carpenter/Jeffrey Obrow

Cast: Rod Steiger, Kim Hunter, David Allen Brooks

Very effective monster horror film  by the directing duet of Carpenter/Obrow. The monster effects manage to up the creative ante significantly and there are plenty of genuinely chilling moments to be found in the film.

Amanda’s deathbed request to her son, John, was for him to destroy all the lab notes from her last experiment. She also blurts out he had a brother, called Anthony. At the funeral John meets Melissa, who claims to be his mother’s biggest fan. Together with some of John’s friends they go to Amanda’s house, but none are prepared for what they find there. Dr. Lloyd, one of Amanda’s old colleagues is also interested in her Haemocyane related experiments and journals. An entire group of people settle in Amanda’s place but there is no trace of Anthony or maybe is there?

The film deals with the pretty unoriginal moral dilemma that questions the limitations of science .Can Man intervene in the course of human life/evolution in the way that Dr.Lloyd brags he is able to do?  However there is nothing deep or existentialist about this movie. There is little character build-up or actual story to begin with. The plot is very linear and easy to follow ,typical exploitation/b-movie fare if you ask me.

However the half octopus/half men mutants that are lurking in Amanda’s basement are truly impressive and the death scenes are very well-constructed. The pace of the film is brisk and the conclusion is sheer exploitation brilliance.

The Kindred didn’t originally manage to change the face of horror cinema and it is very unlikely that it will ever manage to do so. However it is an action-packed exploitation/monster/horror entry that still holds up quite well despite its age. It is inexplicable why it hasn’t received the dvd/blu-ray treatment yet, but I’m sure that this injustice will be rectified in the near future.
