Desert Warrior

Desert Warrior(1988)

directed by:Jim Goldman

cast:Lou Ferrigno, Shari Shattuck, Walter Abbot

In the post-nuclear wastes of Earth two civilizations fight for survival. The Tyrogs, who dwell in the City of Doom, and the Drones, who live underground, free from the high levels of radiation brought about in The Cataclysm. Baktar, leader of the Tyrogs, has just had a child, but the radiation has caused the child to be born a mutant, so he sends Zerak (Lou Ferrigno), his right hand man, to find an unaffected woman. Racela, a beautiful Drone, has chosen the wrong time to venture out of the underground shelter, as Zerak finds and captures her for his leader. However, while guarding her in prison, Zerak falls for Racela and decides to leave the City of Doom with her. With the two groups about to go to war, Zerak must fight his way through his former allies to get Racela to safety. The nuclear war is over but the fight for survival has just begun…

Well the premise of this one is very basic and the overall result is also basic.Let’s start with setting up the basic rule for this presentation:If someone is after common sense, character development and continuity in the post apocalypse sub-genre then he/she should steer clear. After all you are about to watch a film whose main characters are called:Baktar,Zerak and Racela …what did you expect?

However “Desert Warrior” tells its tale in an entertaining if totally derivative and unoriginal manner. The storyline revolves around the quest for the “pure breeder” that will regenerate humanity and will lead it to the new dawn.More movies than I care to remember basically say the same things.Scavenger tribes that fight each other ad perpetuum are also part of the picture.

This is good fun though…Ferrigno is splendidly wooden and the final scene is so cringeworthy that it actually is memorable. The laser effects are also laughable.

Desert Warrior is good for what it is,lowest common denominator post-apocalypse action .No twists and turns are to be expected,if you are a fan of the genre you will probably enjoy this one.
