Nightmare at Noon (1988)

Nightmare at noon (1988) aka “Death Street USA”

Directed by; Nico Mastorakis

cast:Wings Hauser, Bo Hopkins, George Kennedy

Scientists poison the water supply of a small town, turning the residents into homicidal maniacs who kill each other and anybody who passes through. They also damage the infrastracture so that no one can leave the place.Chaos ensues…

Damn, this was good old braindead fun!Don’t expect any profound, hidden messages here. It’s only a rockin’ melting pot of nice cinema genres, under a B-movie scope of course.Namely:Action, western, zombie movies are mixed and make a superb b-movie.The most significant movie reference is  George Romero’s “The crazies”,but “Nightmare at noon” loses hands down in terms of social commentary. After all Mastorakis was always a great exploitation and genre cinema director rather than an arthouse or socially aware autheur. The guy would go straight for the jugular and would depict as much bloodshed, explosions and violence as possible. However, the zombies in this one could be more menacing and the bloodshed could be more too.Performances are also quite typical for b-movie standards.Mastorakis’ directing job is solid though and he makes great use of the rural and rocky Utah locations.

cool Greek vhs from the bargain bin…

To sum up,”Nightmare at noon” is a superb way to spend a late night,as it seems to have quite a few assets up its sleeve.B-movie fans cannot go wrong with this one.
