I escaped from Devil’s Island (1973)

A typical Corman quickie ,this jungle/action/prison actioner has the right amount of sleaze to please the grindhouse aficionados ,but suffers from a relatively weak second half.
Set in 1918 in the Penitentiary complex in French Guiana known as Devil’s island, this flick is about a group of prisoners , the hardened criminal La Bras (former football player Jim Brown of Slaughter fame), political prisoner Davert (Christopher George of City of the living Dead fame) and two other fellow inmates who plot their escape from the notorious fortress. After they managed to escape on a vessel made of animal pelts that La Bras managed to smuggle out of the prison they are helped by a leper colony , fall victims to an ambush set by a local Indian tribe, get to know themselves better with the local women and are being chased by the police.
It’s interesting to know that this was almost directed by Martin Scorsese, who opted to shoot Mean Streets instead. Well the next option was seasoned director William Witney who did this in a slightly pedestrian manner but who is thankfully aided by the ever charismatic Jim Brown ,whose presence is undoubtedly the saving grace of this film. The first half of the film, where the convicts plan their escape offers us some memorable moments of 70ies exploitation cheese and while it is not really a gritty affair, the depiction of violence does work here. The second part is where the pacing starts having issues and the whole thing almost falls apart. Christopher George has been accused of being a line reader rather than a proper actor and while this is pretty much the case with him, here he manages to deliver a tolerable performance. The parts of the wardens are overacted in a typical exploitation manner.
To sum things up, this is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but if Seventies action/adventure is your thing then you’ll probably enjoy 88 minutes of unmistakable Seventies machismo .
At least Jim Brown is a blast to watch…
Εξπλοιτεησιον μασκαράτα των αδελφών Κόρμαν που παρακολουθείται ανενδοίαστα αλλά δε σηκώνει πολλές τυμπανοκρουσίες.
Δύο κατάδικοι στο νησί του διαβόλου,στη Γαλλική Γουινέα δηλαδή,ο ένας ποινικός και ο άλλος πολιτικός,επιχειρούν και καταφέρνουν να αποδράσουν, αφήνοντας πίσω τους τη βαρβαρότητα του αποικιοκρατικού Γαλλικού σωφρονιστικού κώδικα των αρχών του εικοστού αιώνα, μπλέκοντας όμως σε περιπέτειες και έχοντας να αντιμετωπίσουν τις δυνάμεις τις αστυνομίας που τους καταδιώκουν σε κάθε τους βήμα.
Μπορούμε μόνο να φανταστούμε τι θα είχε συμβεί αν ο Μάρτιν Σκορσέζε είχε δεχτεί την πρόταση του Ρότζερ Κόρμαν να σκηνοθετήσει το παρόν.Δυστυχώς ή ευτυχώς ο μεγάλος Ιταλοαμερικάνος σκηνοθέτης απέρριψε την πρόταση και έτσι αυτό που μας μένει είναι να αναφερθούμε στη δυναμική παρουσία του Τζιμ Μπράουν ,ο οποίος αναλαμβάνει να σηκώσει το βάρος της ταινίας στους ώμους του και εν πολλοίς τα καταφέρνει μια χαρά.
Όπως προαναφέραμε το παρόν φέρει αυτούσιους τους κώδικες του εξπλοητεήσιον της εποχής αλλά δεν καινοτομεί ,ούτε προβληματίζει σε καμία στιγμή του.
Ενενήντα λεπτά ραστώνης για τους οπαδούς του είδους και τους αρχειοθέτες του έργου της οικογένειας Κόρμαν και του Τζίμ Μπράουν.
